Microsoft's virtual ecosystem aims to simulate the entire world

1 hr.

Microsoft Research is embarking on a highly ambitious project: A computational model of an entire ecosystem, from the soil itself to the creatures that live on it.

Such a comprehensive model would be useful not just to biologists, but to city planners and legislators, who could see concrete?predictions regarding things like deforestation and dams.

To model anything from nature properly is a monumental task, regardless of scale. A single atom, a single cell, or a single organism contains so much information and so many variables that it is effectively impossible to model them perfectly.

Modeling?an entire ecosystem with any accuracy, then, is a task of mind-boggling complexity. But not too long ago, so was sequencing the human genome, or simulating the way proteins form and fold in the molecular soup of our bodies. Drew Purves at Microsoft Research in Cambridge thinks the time has come for what the company describes as a General Ecosystem Model?(also known as GEM)?? capable of simulating just about any ecosystem in the world.

Purves wrote an article for the journal Nature announcing the?team's intentions, and calling for others to help out ? because it's not a small project. They've already created a prototype, called the Madingley Model, which is already more ambitious than anything out there.

"There are a huge number of ecological and environmental models, but in our opinion, nothing that is yet as comprehensive as a GEM would be," Purves told NBC News in an emailed statement. Models for certain areas of the ocean, or specific types of forests, already exist, but can't be adapted easily. He wants to make one that's powerful enough to be applied anywhere, from the deep ocean to the high desert; you'd just need to put in the correct parameters.

It wouldn't be perfect, but you?don't need a perfect model of something to make useful predictions: Tomorrow's weather, the effects of a drug, and the existence of subatomic particles like the Higgs Boson were all theorized from imperfect models. And Purves cautions that while the researchers' work has a broader range than anything out there, it's still missing a lot.

Even without simulating bacteria or the effects of certain features like streams, researchers can reach predictions that match up to the real world. A rise in temperature, for example, would kill off certain plants and cause others to thrive, which would affect the soil they live in, the herbivores that feed on them, and the carnivores that feed on them. It could all be simulated within the model.

But they still need data. Lots more data. Purves elaborates:?"What we are really missing is good data on the state of whole ecosystems... how much herbivore biomass there is in total, or, how many individuals of each size class?" After all, a thousand, big wildebeest may consume more grass than small ones, and seek out higher territories. And since every creature ends up recycled into the ecosystem again, every statistic is important to keep track of.

Purves hopes that the model will enable not just advances in science, but in policy as well. With a true model of a state or region's ecosystem, the effects of dams, runoff, climate change, and other things can be calculated objectively and included as part of the lawmaking discussion. On that front, the researchers are collaborating with the United Nations Environment Programme to help?hone?their work for political relevance.

It's a work in progress, but in a few years it could be a powerful resource for anyone looking into the effects of just about anything on the environment and its denizens. New updates to the project will be logged at the Computational Ecology and Environmental Science section of Microsoft Research.

Bell: DaPonte doesn't get RI progressives' income tax critique ...

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Dan DaPonte caused a stir last week when he told me he was ?quite honestly confused at the liberal opinion that the 2010 personal income tax reform was a big giveaway to high-income earners.? Samuel Bell, Rhode Island coordinator for the Progressive Democrats of America, e-mailed this response to the chairman?s comments:

There is a very simple reason Senator Dan DaPonte says he is ?confused at the liberal opinion that the 2010 personal income tax reform was a big giveaway to high-income earners.? That is not the liberal opinion. DaPonte is confusing the 2010 reform with the 2006 tax cuts for the wealthy ? the flat tax ? which were indeed a big giveaway to the rich.

As a package of technocratic changes, the 2010 reform had a fairly minor effect on the overall income tax code. The details are dull and unimportant: instead of allowing the top rate to fall from 6% in 2010 to 5.5% in 2011, as it would have under the law at the time, the 2010 reform froze the top rate at 6%. (Technically, the rate fell by 0.01 points to 5.99%.) So relative to the proposed 5.5% flat tax rate for 2011, the 2010 reform actually raised income tax rates on the wealthy extremely mildly. On the other hand, relative to 2010 policy, the changes represented a minuscule decrease in effective nominal tax rates for the wealthy (due to the complexities of the marginal rate structure). In short, it was a bureaucratic reform of little significance. If progressives opposed the 2010 changes, it was because they did not address the deeply unfair 2006 tax cuts for the wealthy.

Few red states have slashed taxes for the rich as deeply as Rhode Island did in 2006. When state lawmakers dropped the top rate from 9.9% to 5.99%, the General Assembly claimed they were creating jobs. What followed was a clear demonstration of the failure of Republican economics. There is only one difference between what happened in Rhode Island and what the national Republican party would like to do to America: in Rhode Island, many of the Republicans have Ds after their names.

The economic devastation we are facing does not call for the laughably tiny tweaks Chafee and the General Assembly are proposing. What we need is a jobs bill, one we can easily fund by rolling back the 2006 giveaways to the rich. So let?s not waste our time discussing the bureaucratic baby steps Smith Hill loves. Let?s actually fix the economy.

Man and Mars through history

In an image that scientists call the sharpest image ever made from Earth, the planet Mars is seen as a dynamic planet covered by frosty white water ice clouds and swirling orange dust storms above a vivid rusty landscape, in this view made by the Earth-orbiting Hubble Space Telescope on June 26, 2001. (NASA-Hubble Heritage Team/AP)

As early as the 2nd millennium BC, the Babylonians made reference to Mars, which was identified with the god of war and destruction, Nergal. Later, the Greeks named it Ares after their god of war, while the Romans identified it with a warrior deity, too ? Mars.

See more photos ? Hinting at the look of the next Murano, Nissan debuted the Resonance Concept at the North American International Auto Show this week.

Much like the original Murano, the Resonance features striking styling that previews the look of future Nissan vehicles, while taking the crossover concept to new levels of aerodynamics and efficiency.

Under the hood is a 2.5-liter gasoline engine, paired to "one motor, two clutch" proprietary hybrid system. Power is put to the road through all four wheels using an Xtronic CVT continuously-variable transmission.

Behind the concept's five-spoke, 22-inch wheels, regenerative braking energy is harnessed to top up the lithium-ion battery, as with many other hybrids.

As you can see in our live images, the Resonance has a distinctive design, with V-shaped light units front and rear and a large, chrome-lipped grille.

The roof appears to float on glass towards the back of the car, where the traditional C and D pillars seem to disappear. Instead, the side window glass curves seamlessly into the rear light units.

Inside, the Resonance has the sort of clean, modern feel familiar to the Leaf, albeit much more dramatically styled--the center console controls appear to hover science-fiction style in a glass enclosure.

Nissan says the Resonance will appeal to customers whose "fashion and design choices make a statement".

Does it? Leave us your thoughts below--and don't forget to check out our Detroit Auto Show page for more photos and launch details.
