New Mexico House Speaker Ben Luj?n died Dec. 18 after an extended battle with lung cancer. He died at about 10:45 p.m.
According to a report in the Santa Fe New Mexican, Luj?n?s chief of staff Regis Pecos said Luj?n had been hospitalized since Dec. 16 with respiratory problems.
?He was with [his wife] Carmen and the congressman,? Pecos told the Santa Fe New Mexican, referring to Luj?n?s son Ben Ray Luj?n.
Luj?n, a Democrat from Namb?, announced early this year that he wouldn?t seek re-election for another term because of his condition. He had been House speaker since 2001.
