Navalny, Russia's protest hero, fights oil company (AP)

MOSCOW ? An anti-corruption lawyer who has been a key force behind popular protests against Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin demanded Thursday that the country's largest oil company release more information about its investments, saying the firm spends money in "strange and non-transparent ways."

Alexei Navalny's efforts to expose corruption in Russia have gained renewed attention in the wake of the fraud-tainted Dec. 4 parliamentary election that has angered Russians already sick of bribe-demanding public officials and led to the massive protests.

Navalny is a minority shareholder in the state-controlled Rosneft oil company, and has used that position to try to convince courts to help him gain more information from the firm. Navalny, who reaches tens of thousands through his blog and has more than 167,000 followers on Twitter, alleges that the oil giant's investment projects serve as a cover for kickbacks.

On Thursday, he attended a session of Moscow's Arbitration Court to continue pressing for minutes of Rosneft's board of directors meetings in 2009. The court adjourned proceedings until next month for technical reasons. Afterward, Navalny lambasted Rosneft's failure to cooperate with his requests.

"They are reluctant to release the information in order to cover up corruption," he said. "They spend money in a strange and non-transparent ways, throwing them on the Olympic Games, giant construction projects, obscure investment plans."

Rosneft has rejected Navalny's allegations.

Navalny was one of the key speakers at last weekend's protest in Moscow against election fraud, which drew up to 100,000 people in the largest outpouring of public anger since massive protests that swept away the Soviet Union 20 years ago.

Navalny has pledged to take up to 1 million protesters to the streets in the run-up to the March election in which Putin, currently prime minister, intends to reclaim the presidency. Navalny insists the vote is illegitimate because Putin has kept potential challengers away through tight controls over the political scene.

Using his rights as a minority shareholder, Navalny has gathered evidence of corruption at state-controlled oil and gas companies and banks. His cases against some top names in Russian business have made little progress in court but helped attract public attention to some seemingly outrageous practices.

About a year ago, he set up a website where he posts government documents announcing tenders for various goods and services. He has his team of lawyers study the documents, and also offers the public a chance to review them online.

Obama would trounce Romney, Perry among Latino voters, survey finds

At least two-thirds of Latino registered voters prefer President Obama over Mitt Romney or Rick Perry, a new survey shows. Both do worse than John McCain did in 2008, signaling GOP is not making hoped-for gains among Latinos.

Most Latinos in the United States disapprove of the rise in deportations of illegal immigrants under the Obama administration. But in hypothetical matchups with two Republican presidential candidates, President Obama wins handily, according to a new survey by the Pew Hispanic Center.

Against former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Mr. Obama wins 68 percent to 23 percent among Latino registered voters. Obama also beats Texas Gov. Rick Perry, 69 percent to 23 percent. ?

The fast-growing Hispanic population represents a crucial voting bloc next November. Republicans acknowledge that their nominee must do better against Obama in 2012 than John McCain did in 2008, when Obama won 67 percent of the Hispanic vote, versus 31 percent for Senator McCain. In 2004, when President George W. Bush was reelected, he won 44 percent of the Hispanic vote.

The Pew Hispanic Center survey demonstrates how steep the challenge is for the eventual Republican nominee.

?Even among those who disapprove of the way Obama is handling the issue of deportations, a majority support his reelection over either of these two potential Republican challengers,? the Pew center reports. ?Obama would carry this group by 57 percent to 34 percent against Romney and 61 percent? to 31 percent against Perry.?

As for Newt Gingrich, a separate survey in early November by the Pew Research Center showed Obama beating the former House speaker among Hispanic voters, 61 percent to 36 percent.

Latinos disapprove of Obama?s immigration policy 57 percent to 27 percent, according to the new Pew Hispanic Center survey. Under Obama, deportations have risen to record levels. Since 2009, the annual average is near 400,000, 30 percent higher than the annual average of George W. Bush?s second term and about double the annual average of his first term. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that 81 percent of undocumented immigrants in the United States are of Hispanic origin. Among deportees in 2010, 97 percent were Hispanic, according to figures cited by Pew from the Department of Homeland Security.

Democrats have historically performed better than Republicans among Latinos, except for those of Cuban descent. In the survey, Latinos reported that jobs, education, and health care were the top issues in next year?s election. One-third of registered Latino voters said immigration was extremely important to them.

But the optics of the immigration debate have weighed heavily against the GOP. Republicans tend to favor a ?secure the border first? approach to immigration, while Democrats are more inclined toward comprehensive immigration reform, which would establish a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants while also addressing border security. Critics call the citizenship provision amnesty.

In addition, 90 percent of Latinos support the DREAM Act, legislation that provides legal status to young illegal immigrants who attend college or serve in the US military for two years. The Obama administration backs the DREAM Act, while Republicans tend to oppose it.

In 2012, several swing states have fast-growing Hispanic communities, including Florida, Nevada, and New Mexico. The Obama campaign and state Democratic parties already have extensive outreach programs in place, while the Republican Party is embroiled in its nomination process. Still, Republicans believe the struggling economy ? which has hit minorities harder than other Americans ? gives them an inroad into the Hispanic community. Republicans also argue that Hispanics? entrepreneurial culture and emphasis on family values make their party a natural home for Latinos.?

It is worth acting quickly in order to make the most of this mesmerising, distinctive exhibition.

Leonardo da Vinci was, incontrovertibly, a prodigious talent: and, furthermore, the range of his extraordinary skills is almost inconceivable to many.? He made astonishing inputs not merely into painting, but a range of fields ? he was an gifted sculptor, architect, engineer, mathematician, inventor ? and more.

However, he is of course most highly respected and recognised in the current age as a painter, and the National Gallery?s exhibition focuses on this particular facet of his many talents.

Da Vinci was a remarkable polymath. This is really the blockbuster exhibition of the year.? You will well and truly regret not acquiring tickets.? If you do get tickets, you will revel in the experience of a lifetime.

Additionally to this, make your Christmas in London especially memorable when you take Christmas tours. Sightseeing tours make for a truly exceptional experience. Malaysians pioneer China?s oleochemicals industry

MALAYSIAN investors in China?s oleochemical industry are gaining from the rising demand for eco-friendly soaps and detergent as consumers there pursue better living standards, said Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) director- general Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May.

?Household cleaning products made from oleochemicals are increasingly seen as sustainable alternative to petrochemical variants,? she told Business Times in a recent interview.

Detergent made from cheaper petroleum by-products like kerosene, containing an active ingredient called linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LABS), takes a very long time to biodegrade. This can cause foaming at rivers and excessive algae growth in the lakes. The algae covered lakes robs oxygen from the water, leaving fishes and other aquatic organisms to die.

As detergent manufacturers seek to improve their environmental profile, many replaced LABS with methyl ester sulfonates (MES), eventhough it is a little bit more expensive.

Choo said MES is sourced from palm oil and palm stearin. Both are renewable resources and easily available in Malaysia. Therefore, it is not a surprise that Malaysia is a global hub for making oleochemicals, which are then processed into biodegradable detergent.

Since the 1990s, MES-based laundry detergent started to gain popularity as it is readily biodegradable, renewable, agreeable to vegetarians and most importantly ? cleans well, even in cold water.

Current market leaders of such a green product include Japan?s Lion Corp and America?s Stepan and Huish Detergents.
When contacted, Emery Oleochemicals (M) Sdn Bhd group chief executive officer Dr Kongkrapan Intarajang concurred with Choo that the bright outlook for palm oil-based detergents is fuelled by the global trend towards formulations derived from renewable plant-based ingredients instead of depleting fossil fuel.

In China, Emery with one of its shareholders Sime Darby Plantation Sdn Bhd partnered detergent manufacturer Guangzhou Lonkey Industrial Co Ltd to form Guangzhou Keylink Chemical Co.
The joint venture company is setting up a 40,000-tonne a year MES plant.

?Our MES plant in China is nearing completion. We hope to commission it next year in first quarter,? said Kongkrapan.
Choo noted MPOB?s research in MES is applicable in China because this biodegradable detergent cleans well at low dosage, even in washing water that has high mineral content.

?Although China?s household waters tend to be high in mineral content, it is not a problem. Detergent manufacturers like Lonkey will find it easy to formulate concentrated washing powder using MES,? she said.

Among Lonkey?s laundry detergent brands in the Guangzhou include Gaofuli and Yeshu.
In Malaysia, KLK Oleochemicals Group?s unit, KL-Kepong Oleomas, operates a 50,000-tonne per year MES plant.

?We?re carrying out some upgrading works and doubling the capacity to 100,000 tonnes,? said KLK Oleochemicals managing director A.K. Yeow.

As the world?s top oleochemicals producer, Malaysia exports around 2.2 million tonnes every year.
Malaysia?s lead is partly driven by its community of engineers and chemists having the ability to process palm oil and palm kernel oil into more than 100 types of downstream products.

With such technical prowess and advantage, Malaysians have become pioneers and key investors in China?s oleochemical industry.

Among the earliest to set foot there are Wilmar International Ltd, in which Robert Kuok?s Kuok Group is a substantial shareholder. The other pioneer is Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd?s (KLK) unit KLK-Taiko Palm Oleo Co Ltd. Other Malaysian investors include Teck Guan Perdana Bhd and Kwantas Corp Bhd.

Wilmar?s pioneering investments have given it a headstart over its competitors. Today, it is the biggest player in China?s oleochemical industry with an estimated annual capacity of 800,000 tonnes.

As early as 1999, Yeow frequently flew to China to assess the benefits of producing oleochemicals there.
He recalled scouting for an affordable industrial site equipped with basic infrastructure of piped water and consistent electricity supply.
The management finally chose Zhangjiagang, a town two hours drive from Shanghai, and yet easily accessible by sea.

During the last five years, KLK-Taiko Palm-Oleo had invested some RM200 million there. Today, the facility is able to churn out 220,000 tonnes of fatty acids, soap noodles and glycerine in a year.

Teck Guan?s oleochemical plant at Rugao town, about four hours drive from Shanghai, is able to produce up to 200,000 tonnes of fatty alcohol, fatty acid and glycerin per year.

Kwantas? unit Dongma (Guangzhou Free Trade Zone) Oleochemicals Co Ltd plants in Zhangjiagang near Shanghai and in Guangzhou have a combined 200,000-tonne annual capacity.

These plants make soap noodles, glycerine and other oleochemical derivatives.

Asked on China?s oleochemical demand in the next five years, Choo said: ?Last year, China consumed some 2.5 million tonnes. The market continues to grow because consumption of soaps, detergent, cosmetics and bioplastics will expand as living standards improve?.

She also noted that through China?s Cleaning Industry Association?s appeal for affordable and steady supply of oleochemical ingredients from Southeast Asia, the China government had lowered palm stearin import duty to 2 per cent.

Choo, however, sees the demand for oleochemicals moderating in future. The operating environment there has become highly competitive.

?It will not be as fast as previous years, around 10 to 15 per cent annually.?

Nevertheless, she remains optimistic that new applications like biolubricants, green chemicals, bioplastics and biopolymers will continue to drive the oleochemicals industry there.

Choo also expects more usage of palm-based polyols in China?s polyurethane industry.

Ryan Dunn's Death Shocked Us All In 2011

'Jackass' star's death is our #7 Newsmaker of the year, proving fans appreciated the bearded daredevil as much as we did.

A lot of people view their co-workers as being a kind of extended family. Here at MTV, though, the madmen of "Jackass" really are part of our gang. They've taken over our studios, filled our prime time with outrageous spin-off programs and used their original half-hour show as a launchpad to worldwide fame.

So it was with an especially heavy heart that we reported on "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn's death in a high-speed car crash in June. His untimely passing is #7 on MTV News' Top Newsmakers of 2011 list, indicating the world seemed to share in our appreciation for Bam Margera's bearded best pal.

Dunn, 34, the go-to guy for outrageous stunts that even such stalwarts as Steve O weren't willing to try, died while bombing down the highway in his sports car near his Pennsylvania home after a night of drinks with friends.

Not only did many of our readers write in with fond remembrances of Dunn, but pals Johnny Knoxville and Jeff Tremaine shared their grief, along with everyone from motocross racer Carey Hart to the MTV brass.

With his kind, soft eyes and up-for-anything attitude, Dunn was described by many of his co-stars and cohorts as the kind of guy who would do anything for a friend. Many of you shared your stories of meeting him and confirmed that he was a person who loved life and brought a little bit of joy to everyone he met. As always, we tried to paint a deeper picture than the one you may have gotten from the mainstream press.

When we sent a reporter to Dunn's hometown of West Chester, we spoke to some of his neighbors and those gathered at a makeshift highway memorial. They too spoke of a kind-hearted soul who always remembered everyone he met and, well, just seemed like a good dude who really appreciated the life his fans had allowed him to live.

And yes, once the details about his death, along with that of passenger Zachary Hartwell, came to light, they served as a cautionary tale about the dangers of drinking and driving. Police determined that Dunn, a notorious speed demon, was driving his 2007 Porsche between 132 and 140 mph in a 55 mph zone and that his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit in Pennsylvania.

A recent MTV special gave a loving overview of Dunn's life, told through his many TV appearances and the memories of his co-stars and friends, following his career from his early years in Ohio to some never-before-seen clips from "Viva La Bam" and "Jackass."

His friends said Dunn liked to marvel at the kind of life he was able to lead thanks to his willingness to dive into pools of poo and ride BMX bikes off roofs. And though we will miss him, he left behind the best legacy we could ask for: laughter and joy.

MTV continues our Best of 2011 coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. As we count down the newsmakers that mattered to you most, also check out our Best Artists, Best Songs, Best MTV Live Performances and Best EDM Artists of 2011.

Western Carolina University prepared for winter weather

With winter almost upon us, the Western Carolinian wanted to refresh readers on the university's policy on cancelling classes due to weather, what is done behind the scenes to keep campus safe during winter months and provide a few tips on how to be prepared when winter weather strikes.

The newspaper sat down with Interim Provost Dr. Beth Lofquist to discuss the policy of class cancelation due to weather.

Lofquist referred to the policy in the university handbook that states because WCU is home to more than 3,500 students who live on campus, the university does not cancel classes due to disruptive weather. Exceptions are made for extreme conditions, power outages or if weather is particularly hazardous during a time after a long break when it is apparent that most of the student body will be traveling.

"Typically, what you will be told is to be careful," Lofquist said. "If you can get here, we will have class, but if you cannot get here due to inclement weather, faculty cannot penalize you."

If a commuting student or professor cannot attend class due to an unsafe route, tools like Blackboard make it almost unnecessary to cancel classes, Lofquist added. If classes are canceled, they must be made-up somehow, and it is up to the professor to decide how that will be done.

According to Lofquist, it would be extremely unlikely for students who live on campus to not be able to make it to class due to weather because of the steps the university takes to prepare for it.

Tammi Hudson, Western Carolina University's Emergency Manager, said WCU goes above and beyond to prepare for winter.

"Normally we have relatively mild winters in Cullowhee, with one or two significant snow events a year, but the last two winters have been a couple of the worst on record in the last 30 years," Hudson said. "As a campus community, we've worked hard over the last two years to refine our response efforts and communication to the community during severe weather events."

According to Hudson, areas in the mountains are sometimes a bit unpredictable. Weather in Cashiers or Asheville might not be the same in Cullowhee. It is her team's top priority to not only monitor weather in the Cullowhee area, but also require a detailed check-up of the main roads leading to campus and the roads to local apartments.

Hudson and her team have already started to monitor the weather constantly on their high-tech machines that give up-to-date weather conditions and weather radar. They also receive regular updates and special weather reports from the National Weather Service.

The campus police department patrols 24 hours a day, and during the winter months they keep a special eye on road conditions at night. If they see ice patches or heavy snow on the road, they report it to Hudson and her team. Once potentially dangerous weather conditions are reported, the campus grounds crew is alerted.

"They are absolutely outstanding," Hudson said. "They will work day and night to clean and salt the roads."

Since the coldest part of the day is around 6 a.m., the grounds crewworks mostly at night and early in the morning, before any campus activity starts. Hudson said students, faculty and staff can take comfort in knowing that while they sleep, the grounds crew is working diligently to ensure safety for the morning.

WCU also stays in contact with the Jackson County Department of Transportation to receive detailed reports of road conditions on major roads leading to campus and smaller roads to apartments.

Police, EMS, dining services, residential living, grounds crew and even entertainment services are considered essential campus services. Essential services will never close, even if classes are cancelled and roads leading the campus are not safe to drive. WCU will house critical staff members on campus to guarantee that their services will be available to students at all times.

If the threat of severe winter weather hits, Hudson and her team recommend taking advantage of the wide selection of technology provided by WCU to find out information on schedule changes and road conditions.

Hudson's personal favorite is CatTracker, an alert system that goes straight from WCU's Emergency Management Team to cell phones. All it takes is a few seconds to sign up on the university website, and wherever you are, your cell phone will notify you of any emergencies or updates.

Other resources are MyCat emails, WCU's Facebook or Twitter pages and the WCU website ? which will have an advisory announcement on the homepage that can be clicked for more details.

A few ways to be prepared during winter weather events are to always have your cell phone charged, a full tank of gas, the WCU Police Department's phone number, plenty of bottled water, non-perishable food, a flashlight and an emergency kit in your vehicle. Also, remember that the essential services on campus will always be available.

The more prepared you are for unfavorable conditions, the less you have to worry about when they happen. Keep up with the announcements Hudson and her team sends, monitor road conditions and have a few preparations at your home or dorm.

The weather outside might seem frightful, but because of the steps WCU takes to prepare for it, it could actually be quite delightful.

In swing Ohio, Gingrich gaining the "not-Romneys" (AP)

WEST CHESTER, Ohio ? For "Anybody but Romney" Republicans in a key conservative region of Ohio, Newt Gingrich has been picking up support as an alternative to the former Massachusetts governor.

The former House speaker has moved to the top in recent polling in Ohio, just as Republican presidential candidates prepare for the Jan. 3 caucuses in Iowa, followed closely by the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries. Ohio's presidential primary is scheduled for March 6, one of the biggest prizes for Republicans among about a dozen states voting on "Super Tuesday."

Mitt Romney hasn't excited some of the party's staunchest conservatives for reasons that include his past support of abortion rights and enactment of a Massachusetts health care plan that's often compared to President Barack Obama's overhaul.

Some conservatives had flirted with supporting Herman Cain, drawn to his business background and unconventional campaign style. But Cain suspended his campaign this month following allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior and a longtime extramarital affair. Cain's decision and Gingrich's performance in nationally televised debates helped some make up their minds.

"He's sold me," said Dan Keith, 61, of Hamilton. Keith and his wife, Pat, said they are convinced that Gingrich has the experience and savvy to be strong against Obama. "I can't see anybody else coming onto the scene that we would go to."

The Keiths said they were undecided when first interviewed three months ago.

"I think before, people liked the other candidates because they were an alternative to Romney. But I'm hearing more people who like Gingrich as Gingrich," said Bill Langdon, co-owner of the Grand Ole Pub, a popular gathering spot for Republican partisans in West Chester. Langdon had been interested in Cain, but doubted whether Cain could win the presidential nomination.

Gingrich is now his choice. "He's the guy they think can go toe-to-toe with the president," Langdon said.

Sandra Arno, of nearby Springdale, turned out for Cain's visit to West Chester in November and liked what she heard. She was deciding between him and Gingrich before Cain stopped campaigning, and most recently was leaning toward the former speaker.

"I think they're both very intelligent, and I think Newt will be good as the candidate," Arno said.

Republican-dominated suburbs like this one ? home of House Speaker John Boehner ? just north of Cincinnati provide a stronghold of votes in a state that no GOP nominee has ever reached the White House without winning. Their enthusiastic turnout to vote for George W. Bush by 2-to-1 margins in 2004 is credited with delivering Ohio to clinch his re-election. It's important for the Republican nominee to be able to attract big numbers in GOP-oriented suburban and rural regions to offset Democratic urban bastions led by Cleveland.

Ohio could be more crucial to Gingrich than some of his rivals because the former House speaker failed to qualify for Virginia's primary ballot. Gingrich's campaign has said he will pursue an aggressive write-in campaign in Virginia, although state law prohibits write-ins on primary ballots.

The state party said over the weekend that both Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry had failed to submit the required 10,000 signatures to appear on the March 6 ballot. Failing to get on the ballot in Virginia, where Gingrich lives, underscores the difficulty first-time national candidates have in preparing for the long haul of a presidential campaign.

In Ohio, a series of Quinnipiac University polls tracked Gingrich's rise from low single-digits to 36 percent between September and early December. Cain had fallen to 7 percent after leading the pack at 28 percent in October. The sexual harassment allegations against Cain surfaced in late October.

Lori Viars, a conservative activist and anti-abortion leader in Lebanon, predicted that a Romney nomination would keep some Christian evangelicals on the sidelines in November because of concern about his previous positions on issues, led by abortion. Some in her crowd ? Viars is among them ? might also hesitate over Gingrich's personal history, which includes two divorces and acknowledged marital infidelity.

"Newt makes a lot of sense," Viars said. "But everyone makes mistakes, and he certainly is right on a lot of issues."

Several of those who have come around to Gingrich say they're not put off by his personal past.

"Would I want him as marriage counselor? No," said Keith. "But that's not what we're electing."

Keith's wife thinks Gingrich's candidacy is on firmer ground because he's already undergone years of scrutiny.

"They've already raked him over the coals pretty good," Pat Keith said.

Other Republican activists say it's still too soon to pick a candidate in a state where there has been little campaigning, and with the GOP field likely to be smaller by the time of Ohio's primary in March.

This region of Ohio is home to some of the nation's first tea party groups, and a number of activists are loyal to Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who has attracted a band of followers with libertarian-minded calls to bring home U.S. troops and keep the government out of personal decisions.

Cincinnati tea party leader Mike Wilson, though, is "watching and waiting."

Wilson's favorite candidate was Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor who dropped out in August. Wilson doesn't share the worry about Romney becoming the nominee. He also said a respectable Iowa finish by Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann or Texas Gov. Rick Perry could give either of those conservative favorites some traction heading into the contests that follow.

Wilson said Romney can defeat Obama and would work with a Republican-controlled House, should it stay in GOP hands.

"I think we know who the ultimate opponent is ? Barack Obama," Wilson said. "With John Boehner as speaker, I think Romney will sign a lot of Republican legislation over the next four years."

Minneapolis church connects hip-hop to ministry

Minneapolis church connects hip-hop to ministry

NIKKI TUNDEL
Minnesota Public Radio News

MINNEAPOLIS ? Many urban churches are finding it increasingly difficult to get young adults through their doors.

But one Minneapolis minister is engaging religion-wary teens and twenty-somethings by mixing a little hip-hop in with the holiness.

On a recent Saturday night, disco lights blasted colored rays around the room at Urban Jerusalem, a Pentecostal church in north Minneapolis. The DJ settled in behind a stack of vinyl. Stacey Jones, the senior pastor at Urban Jerusalem, commanded the microphone.

"Every time the religious leaders came to Jesus to try to catch him," he told the congregation, "Jesus would just blow their mind. Jesus would just throw one or two lines and they were like, `Oh, snap.' "

Here, turntables stand in place of a pulpit. Graffiti art, rather than stained glass, frames the sanctuary. And the hymns are the kind which can, and do, move congregants to breakdance.

Stacey and his wife, Tryenyse, launched this Twin Cities church five years ago, with the goal of connecting urban youth with Christ. The best way to do that, they figured, was to incorporate a culture many kids already worshipped ? hip-hop.

"Drop the track, man," the preacher calls. "Praise God! Yeah!"

In many ways, the Jones' are just like generations of pastors before them ? they're using modern music to make religion more relatable.

"We still bring the word," Gerald Shepherd said. He's the evening's emcee, or minister of music, as he likes to be called. But he's just one of the worshippers who bring their faith to the dance floor.

"We still believe Jesus died, he rose, everything like that," Shepherd said. "We bring a different style to worship."

About 30 twenty-somethings in baseball caps and baggy jeans supplement the sermon with their own songs and poems ? anything that expresses their spiritual side.

"The king of angels, the messiah, the sacrifice," raps a singer. "Why in this whole universe was he willing to pay this price?"

One of the rappers introduces himself as Brad Peglow. "My rap name is B.P. the Preacher Man," he said. "I had some secular hip-hop artists ask me one time, `How can you flow for a whole song and not curse and keep it clean?' And I tell `em, `Well, I don't listen to any of that other stuff.

"Therefore it's not hard for me at all. I put the word in me and surround myself with godly influences so when the beat drops that's what comes out. Music kinda flows out of what you allow yourself to influence.' "

Jones can't help but tap his Bible to the beat. But the way he sees it, hip-hop worship requires more than just spinning records to the scriptures.

"Our mission statement is to present the word of God in relevant form," Jones said. "Relevancy is not just the musical aspect. Relevancy is dealing with everyday life issues. You have drugs. You have people struggling with depression. Those are real life things. And one thing about hip-hop: hip-hop deals with everyday issues." "Say hello to my little friend," sings a congregant. "The one who washed away my little sins, the one who kept from sipping a little gin." "If there is any place you can talk about issues of struggle, why not the church?" Jones asks.

Since Pastor Jones hit the scene, at least five new hip-hop churches have popped up the in Twin Cities.

There are traditionalists who find beat boxing akin to blasphemy. But for the worshippers at Urban Jerusalem, spirituality just seems to go better with strobe lights.

Clashes between sect, police kill 61 in Nigeria

Fighting between a radical Muslim sect and paramilitary forces in Nigeria has killed at least 61 people over several days of violence in the nation's northeast that has left churches bombed and people hiding in fear, authorities said Saturday.

In hard-hit Yobe state, where at least 50 people died, the government ordered a dusk-till-dawn curfew following attacks by the sect known as Boko Haram. In Maiduguri, the capital of neighboring Borno state, bombs reduced at least three churches to rubble and raised fears of further attacks by a group that claimed Christmas Eve bombings last year that killed dozens.

The fighting began Thursday in the two states, with gunfire and explosions heard into the night and the following day in an arid region that borders Cameroon, Chad and Niger. Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state, and the town of Potiskum bore the brunt of the violence.

In Damaturu, residents fled their homes near the city's central mosque ahead of a combined attack by soldiers and the federal police's feared Mobile Police, known as "kill-and-go" for their propensity for violence. The paramilitary forces raided the area in armored personnel carriers and tanks, with heavy gunfire marking their arrival.

"We were able to kill 12 of the Boko Haram armed sect and bombers," local police commissioner Lawan Tanko said. The police commissioner said officers also recovered Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition and explosives.

In Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, a mortuary official who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter told The Associated Press at least 11 bodies had been brought in from the violence. Authorities blamed Boko Haram for firebombing at least three churches around the capital, attacks that killed one pastor and his young child.

This is just the latest in a series of bombings over the last year by Boko Haram. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, wants to implement strict Shariah law across a nation of more than 160 million people that is home to both Christians and Muslims.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a Nov. 4 attack on Damaturu, Yobe state's capital, that killed more than 100 people. The group also claimed the Aug. 24 suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Nigeria's capital that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties. The sect is responsible for at least 465 killings in Nigeria this year alone, according to an AP count.

Boko Haram has splintered into three factions, with one wing increasingly willing to kill as it maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia, diplomats and security sources say. That, as well as its increasingly violent attacks, have some worried the group will carry out further attacks around Christmas and New Year's.

Last year, a series of Christmas Eve bombings in the central Nigerian city of Jos claimed by Boko Haram killed at least 32 people and wounded at least 74 others.

With those attacks in mind, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria's capital of Abuja issued a warning Friday to citizens to be "particularly vigilant" around churches, large crowds and areas where foreigners congregate.

Analysts say the government's response remains strained as President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the country's south, remains worried about alienating the country's predominantly Muslim north with heavy-handed tactics. In 2009, a military and police crackdown following rioting by Boko Haram members in and around Maiduguri left 700 people dead.

Yet since Thursday, authorities have been using paramilitary police and soldiers more freely. Tanko, the Yobe state police commissioner, said joint patrols by the military and police would continue.

"When you are fighting people you don't know, you cannot say that's the end of the exercise," Tanko said. "We are trying to ensure that will be the end, but we are monitoring what is going on. But we know we cannot specifically say that will be the end."

2 women share 1st kiss at US Navy ship's return (AP)

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. ? A Navy tradition caught up with the repeal of the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" rule on Wednesday when two women sailors became the first to share the coveted "first kiss" on the pier after one of them returned from 80 days at sea.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta of Placerville, Calif., descended from the USS Oak Hill amphibious landing ship and shared a quick kiss in the rain with her partner, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell of Los Angeles. Gaeta, 23, wore her Navy dress uniform while Snell, 22, wore a black leather jacket, scarf and blue jeans. The crowd screamed and waved flags around them.

"It's something new, that's for sure," Gaeta told reporters after the kiss.

"It's nice to be able to be myself. It's been a long time coming."

There was little to differentiate this kiss from countless others when a Navy ship pulls into its home port following a deployment. Neither the Navy nor the couple tried to draw special attention to what was happening and many onlookers waiting for their loved ones to come off the ship were busy talking among themselves.

Snell smiled as she approached Gaeta and they briefly embraced as a small contingent of local television crews and photographers, who were unaware about what was going to happen until moments earlier, captured the scene.

"She told me about the first kiss a couple of days ago and I kind of freaked out ? in a good way ? but of course I'm a little nervous, you know. But I've been waiting since she left," Snell said.

David Bauer, the commanding officer of the USS Oak Hill, said that Gaeta and Snell's kiss would largely be a non-event and the crew's reaction upon learning who was selected to have the first kiss was positive.

"It's going to happen and the crew's going to enjoy it. We're going to move on and it won't overshadow the great things that this crew has accomplished over the past three months," Bauer said.

The ship returned to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story following an 80-day deployment to Central America. The crew of more than 300 participated in exercises involving the militaries of Honduras, Guatemala Colombia and Panama as part of Amphibious-Southern Partnership Station 2012.

Both women are Navy fire controlmen, who maintain and operate weapons systems on ships. They met as roommates at training school and have been dating for two years, which they said was difficult under "don't ask, don't tell."

Repeal of the 18-year-old legal provision, under which gays could serve as long as they didn't openly acknowledge their sexual orientation, took effect in September.

"We did have to hide it a lot in the beginning," Snell said. "A lot of people were not always supportive of it in the beginning, but we can finally be honest about who we are in our relationship, so I'm happy."

Navy officials said it was the first time on record that a same-sex couple was chosen to kiss first upon a ship's return. Sailors and their loved ones bought $1 raffle tickets for the opportunity. Gaeta said she bought $50 of tickets, a figure that she said pales in comparison to amounts that some other sailors and their loved ones had bought.

The money was used to host a Christmas party for the children of sailors and Gaeta said everybody in her chain of command and on her ship supported her win in the drawing.

Snell said she believes their experience won't be the last one for gays and lesbians in the military.

"I think that it's something that is going to open a lot of doors, for not just our relationship, but all the other gay and lesbian relationships that are in the military now," she said.

Snell is based on the USS Bainbridge, the guided missile destroyer that helped rescue cargo captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates in 2009.

Rome meeting analyses Iran oil embargo (Reuters)

ROME (Reuters) ? Diplomats from a so-called "group of like-minded nations" met in Rome on Tuesday to discuss further sanctions against Iran, diplomatic sources said.

The closed-door meeting is taking place under the auspices of the Italian foreign ministry and participants considered it a "technical meeting," an Italian diplomatic source said.

Diplomats said it would consider the arguments around a possible EU oil embargo against Iran. A decision may be made when EU foreign ministers next meet in January.

No decisions are expected to emerge from Tuesday's meeting.

Participants are countries that have imposed bilateral sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program that go beyond U.N. Security Council sanctions.

The group includes the United States, the European Union and several European nations, Australia, Japan, South Korea and other countries but it was not clear if all of them were represented. The United States is attending.

The small informal group has been meeting for two years and its goal is to share information and discuss the next steps in the sanctions process.

The United States has long banned Iranian crude imports and last week Congress voted through restrictions on dealing with the Iranian central bank. The White House must decide whether or not to grant waivers to major Iranian oil importers like China, India and South Korea that need to deal with the bank to pay for Iran's crude.

North Korea Releases Fake "News" Footage of People Supposedly Mourning Kim Jong Il

Kim Jong Il may have eschewed free markets, civil rights, and even FOOD for the citizens of North Korean, but the man pulled out all the stops when it came to acting classes!

How else do you explain this video?

Supposedly taken just after Kim Jong Il died, the footage - released by the isolationist, communist cesspool's state-run media - shows millions mourning the "Dear Leader."

A couple of theories here: 1. They actually just saw a screening of The Notebook, and the government passed it off as a response to Kim's death, or 2. Armed military personnel promised to let them eat this week if they put on a good show.

Either way, these people look sad!

How To Break Out Of A Car's Trunk [How To]

How To Break Out Of A Car's TrunkLet's face it: sooner or later, you're going to get abducted. It's a down economy, there's lots of increasingly desperate unemployed folks, and it's a more dignified way to meet new people than, say, Craigslist personals. So, yes, you'll probably get abducted, but that doesn't mean you have to like it.

One of the most tried-and-true methods of grabbing and kidnapping someone is the classic throw-them-into-the-car-trunk method. It's fast, cheap, and disorients, restrains, and secures for transport all in one stroke. As a kidnapper, why wouldn't you do it that way?

Now, in cars built after 2002, there is a nice, glowing handle inside the trunk, so exit is easy, but you can be sure anyone in the abducting business won't be using a car so equipped. This guide will show you how to get out of most car trunks you may find yourself crammed into. I've done this on a variety of cars, and shown many folks how to do it, as well, adults and kids. You can do it, and, I suggest you actually try it, with a pal around to let you out, just in case. Or, if you have folding rear seats, lower those so you have an escape route. It's fun!

The first thing to keep in mind when you're flung into a trunk is that you're not going to suffocate in there. No cars are built tight enough for that. Next, you'll want to orient yourself so your face and hands are facing the rear of the car. It's okay if you can't see, or have a burlap sack over your head? you mostly need to be able to do a bit of grabbing. It's also good to remember that car trunks are made to be secure from the outside in? no car company is wasting money making a Houdini-proof trunk lid, especially from the inside.

How To Break Out Of A Car's TrunkHow Trunk Locks Work

Most cars have an internal trunk release, and this is the key to a rapid exit. Almost all of these systems work the same, since there's no real advantage for a car maker to have a totally proprietary trunk latch system. That kind of detail just doesn't sell cars. The locks work on a simple hook-and-post principle. There's a post or rod on the on the trunk lid, and a hook mechanism on the body catches it to keep the lid shut (the post or latch may be on the body or lid ? either way works the same). When the trunk release is pulled, or the key is rotated in the lock, what happens is the hook is rotated so it is no longer engaging the post, and the trunk lid can be raised. The inside trunk release simply pulls a long cable connected to the hook so it's free from the post ? power systems do basically the same thing, but with a solenoid.

How To Break Out Of A Car's TrunkGet Your Bearings and Get Out

What you'll want to do is feel around the inside of the trunk ? by the rear hinges is a good place to start ? for a stiff cable. This is actually a sheath for the inner cable, but very often tugging the whole thing back to the front of the car will pop the release. You may have to move carpet or pop off cardboard panels, but that release cable will be there, snaking from the hinge area, along the sides the trunk on the driver's side, to the lock mechanism at the center of the rear face of the trunk lid. You may be able to get a better grip on it near the center of the lid where it connects to the lock assembly. It'll be inside the trunk lid itself, between the outer skin and the inner metal structure. If you can grab it here, pull towards the driver side. In most cases, this will pop the release, then you can simply push up on the lid (after the release pops ? otherwise, it'll stick) and open the trunk.

How To Break Out Of A Car's TrunkOr, try this way out

If, somehow, this doesn't work, or the kidnappers are such cheapskates they found a car with no internal release, you can still open the latch by finding the lock cylinder. It will be on the rear face of the trunk lid, on either side or in the center. The lock cylinder (again, it should be accessible through open areas of the sheet metal lid) will have a rod or similar connecting device to the latch mechanism. Grab this and pull side to side to see which way the lock pulls the rod to pop the latch.

How To Break Out Of A Car's TrunkFree at last!

That's really all there is to it. Since many cars have a dash light to indicate an open trunk, I suggest feeling out the various parts first, and actually doing the deed only when you feel the car has stopped. Once the trunk is open, just get the hell out. Run, get off the road. If you're quick and quiet, you can close the trunk and maybe even sneak away before they get to the organ farm or sex dungeon or wherever and realize you're gone.

So there you go ? now that you can get out of a car trunk, you're that much closer to making your city's kidnappers your own personal cab service. Enjoy.

Analysis: Apple struggles to take bigger bite out of China (Reuters)

HONG KONG (Reuters) ? Apple Inc's share of China's booming smartphone market has risen sharply in the past two years, but for now the company that sells the iconic iPhone is being outpaced by nimble rivals.

It is not that Apple's iPhones and iPads are losing favour among Chinese consumers. The iconic products are flying off the shelves at Apple's five flagship stores in Shanghai and Beijing, unauthorized sellers, and even from fake shops dressed up to look eerily like the real thing.

The problem facing Apple seems to be timing.

Network technology is not sufficient to fully support iPhone and iPad capabilities, while other handset makers supply phones that support the various mobile standards used in China.

A tie up with another telecoms service provider would help catapult Apple sales. But the biggest by far, China Mobile Ltd with more than 600 million subscribers, may not have matching technology in place commercially until late 2012 or 2013.

In the absence of that, Apple's relatively rigid global pricing structure and limited range of models are allowing more flexible competitors to grab market share at a faster pace.

Apple's smartphone market share has more than doubled since the first quarter of 2010, but others are doing better. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's market share has more than quadrupled over the same period.

"Apple's strategy in China is to capture the higher-end segment, which is a big enough market for it to tackle," said Jane Wang, an analyst at UK research firm Ovum.

"It has cut prices of some of its products, which will definitely be more affordable for some budget-conscious consumers, but it's only going to go so far in lowering prices."

China has more than 950 million mobile phone users, more than Europe's entire population, and its economy is expected by many to overtake the United States as the world's largest in 10 to 15 years.

Although Apple makes laptops, desktops and iPods, it generated about half its sales from iPhones in the fourth quarter, making the product key to success in China.

The U.S. technology giant's sales in Greater China -- mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan -- have been skyrocketing. Fourth-quarter revenue increased four-fold to $4.5 billion, out of a global total of $28 billion.

Demand is so strong in China that smuggling of real iPhones and sales of fakes are on the rise. Copy-cat stores masquerading as real Apple outlets -- and selling genuine Apple products -- have sprouted up everywhere from Beijing in the northeast to Kunming in the southwest.

PRICE WARS

The relatively high price of iPhones is a major deterrent, giving market inroads to rivals such as Samsung and local rivals Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp, analysts said.

Chinese consumers can typically buy a smartphone from other brands at below 2,000 yuan ($308).

A basic iPhone 4 costs double that -- 3,988 yuan in China. Apple is selling its lower-end iPhone 3GS at 2,888 yuan, which will likely draw some budget-conscious consumers.

But it has not been enough.

In the third quarter, Huawei overtook Apple as the No.3 smartphone vendor in China.

Apple now trails Nokia Oyj, Samsung and Huawei, which all have a wider range of products targeting various segments of customers.

In fact, Apple's smartphone market share shrank to 10.4 percent in the third quarter from 13.3 percent in the previous quarter. Samsung's shot up to 19.2 percent from 14.6 percent and Huawei to 11 percent from 7.3 percent.

Nokia, the market leader, is fast-losing traction. It holds top slot with 26.8 percent share but that has dropped from 36.2 percent in the previous quarter and 71.4 percent a year earlier.

"At the end of the day, Apple will only go so far to lower the pricing because if they go too low, it's going to damage their iconic brand," said Michael Clendenin, managing director at China-focused technology advisory firm RedTech Advisors in Shanghai.

DIFFERENCE

The real missing link in Apple's approach to China is a tie up with China Mobile, the country's top mobile carrier by far, analysts said.

Apple's current partner, China Unicom, is a distant second with 192.4 million mobile subscribers.

"I think a good strategy for Apple is to try and seal deals as soon as possible with the other two China telecom operators," said Ovum's Wang.

However, so far negotiations with China Mobile and fixed-line giant China Telecom, which also has a mobile network with 120 million subscribers, have been protracted.

The main sticking point has been the terms of the agreements, which could range from revenue sharing that would allow both parties to split money from data charges to simple bulk purchases.

However, even with another partner, Apple must contend with another barrier -- China's slow uptake of 3G technology.

Only about a tenth of China's almost 1 billion mobile phone subscribers use 3G. Most users make phone calls and send text messages.

The best immediate option for Apple may be China Telecom, which uses a CDMA technology that the iPhone can use.

China Mobile though uses its homegrown proprietary 3G technology called TD-SCDMA. To tap that, Apple would have to design an iPhone just for China Mobile's network.

"It's quite meaningless for China Mobile and Apple to sign an agreement based on the current TD-SCDMA network. Using the 4G TD-LTE technology that China Mobile is developing will be more feasible," said Kevin Wang, research firm iSuppli's director of China research.

China Mobile is conducting trials on its 4G network, with a commercial launch expected to take place late next year or early 2013. Its commercial 4G rollout will be a precursor to an agreement with Apple, analysts say.

"Apple still has the upper hand. Even though Jobs is not around anymore, Apple's products will still remain quite popular, so they have more bargaining power," said Wang from Ovum.

The slide in Apple's market share may prove temporary or until it can sign a deal with a Chinese telecoms network. Similar deals in other countries have propelled sales sharply.

In the meantime, Chinese have found a way to own an Apple iPhone and still subscribe to China Mobile services. In fact, 10 million China Mobile subscribers use an iPhone because some vendors will cut the service provider's SIM card so that it can fit into an iPhone.
