Deleting media in FTM 2012 on Windows 7 - Family Tree Maker ...

It has been a long day so I may just be confusing myself. But I have been cleaning up my media (finally!) and have been deleting a thousand or more duplicate or otherwise unwanted photos. After selecting the photo and hitting Delete I get a confirmation message which also has the option to tick a box to send the deleted file to the recycle bin. With other software this option is kind of a failsafe, so you can get one last chance to change your mind and restore the file from the recycle bin. But is FTM's approach different?

Answer ID 2437 appeared to indicate the media file has been deleted from your tree, with or without the recycle bin option. The answer did not spell out, as another Help item I found later seems to, that the media file remains in the media folder unless you direct it to the recycle bin. I hate extra clicks but is that what I have to do to actually reduce the size of the FTM media folder?

Will the media I deleted without sending to the recycle bin be part of syncing the tree to Ancestry...I would hope not?

But does it impact performance of the FTM tree which is already very challenged when it comes to working with the media tab? And finally do these "deleted" media files get backed up when backing up the tree itself on the hard drive, or are only the linked media included in the backup?

Grateful for your input. Thanks in advance.

Washington, DC, September 28, 2012 Screening practices for multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in intensive care units (ICUs) vary widely from hospital to hospital, according to a new study published in the October issue of the American Journal of Infection Control, the official publication of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).

The P-NICE interdisciplinary research team from the Columbia University School of Nursing collected and analyzed survey responses from the infection preventionists (IPs) of 250 hospitals that participated in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) in 2008. The goal of the study was to explore the relationship between hospital and infection control characteristics and the adoption, monitoring, and implementation of infection control policies aimed at MDROs.

Researchers found that participating NHSN ICUs routinely screened for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas (59 percent). However, other potentially deadly MDROs were screened for far less frequently: vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (22 percent), gram-negative rods (12 percent), and C. difficile (11 percent).

Forty percent of ICUs reported a written policy to screen for any MDRO, and less than one-third (27 percent) had a policy for periodic screening following admission. One-third reported a policy requiring isolation/contact precautions pending screening, 98 percent reported requiring contact precautions for culture-positive patients, and 42 percent reported a policy for grouping colonized patients together.

The study found that state-mandated reporting, being a teaching hospital, having 201-500 beds, and being located in the western United States were factors associated with having a policy to screen all admissions for any MDRO. Periodic screening after admission was correlated with mandated reporting, teaching status, and use of an electronic surveillance system.

"There is significant variation in adoption of screening and infection control interventions aimed at MDRO and C. difficile in NHSN ICUs, which is congruent with data from other studies and may reflect wide variation in published recommendations or their interpretation," said Monika Pogorzelska, PhD, MPH, lead study author. "Additionally, with the current increase in mandatory reporting, IPs may be focusing on fulfilling mandates rather than implementing policies based on their experience and hospital needs. Further research is needed to provide additional insight on effective strategies and how best to promote compliance."

"Rather than being driven by legislative mandates that are not evidence based, MDRO screening should be based on a facility's risk assessment, as the epidemiology of these organisms can vary from region to region," said APIC 2012 President Michelle Farber, RN, CIC. "APIC recommends that each institution designs an HAI prevention program that is effective for their facility and needs."

Lensbaby Spark Review: Magical Camera Blur Effects, If You Fuss With It [Lightning Review]

Tilt-shift photography is all the rage. It's based on a type of lens that distorts perspective and focal plane to create atmospheric blur effects. Tilt-shift lenses are usually cray expensive, but Lensbaby makes a whole line of blur-tastic lenses for cheap. Their newest toy for a DSLR, the Spark, only costs $80. But does it deliver anything worthwhile? More »

Manhattan Chamber of Commerce

Manhattan Chamber of CommerceThis membership organization is comprised of 10,000 members and subscribers representing more than 100,000 companies in Manhattan. The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce?s members are part of one of the largest constituencies in the country, representing approximately 1.6 million US employees and approximately 4.5 million employees globally. ?Vice President and Director of Communications, Laura Bucko, shares a bit more about both the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce and her own passion for small business:

Small Business Trends: ?How does Manhattan Chamber of Commerce help small businesses?

Laura Bucko: ?We advocate on behalf of the business community, educate our member businesses about current trends and provide networking opportunities to find clients, partners and grow our members? base of contacts.

Small Business Trends: ?What was the last business book you read? What did you like about it?

Laura Bucko: ?Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. I liked how it showed how outside random circumstances can influence our success and how, with a few small changes, we can create more opportunities for success for all.

Small Business Trends: ?What?s your favorite quote that you apply to your business?

Laura Bucko: ?I was going to go with, ?never ever ever give up? from Winston Churchill, but then found another lesser known quote by him:??The pessimist sees the problems in every opportunity. Whereas the optimist sees the opportunity in every problem.?

Your Virtual Assistant

Your Virtual AssistantMichelle Mangen applies her knowledge of accounting, social media, and payroll to help small business owners be more productive through her firm,?Your Virtual Assistant. Mangen is based in Florida, but services clients all over the country. ?She specializes in WordPress services, QuickBooks, social media management, administration services, and Excel spreadsheet creation. She strives to help business owners get more hours in the day by delegating tasks she can assist with:

Small Business Trends:?What?s your top tip for small business owners today?

Michelle Mangen:?My top tip would be that we have to stay current in our industry in order to remain knowledgeable and competitive. Maybe this means taking some classes, reading certain material, etc. Building relationships is also important as well, especially if you are a solo-preneur.

Small Business Trends:?If you were stuck on a desert island?with?Internet, what would be the single app or website you couldn?t live without?

Michelle Mangen:?For me that would be Basecamp. Since most of the tasks I receive from clients are through email it?s important for me to have some system that makes it easy to record items that need follow up. Basecamp allows me to assign tasks out to other team members and the threaded conversations makes it easy to keep everything together (and tidy).

Small Business Trends:?What role does social media play in marketing your business?

Michelle Mangen:?Both very little and a lot. Twitter has always been my favorite social network and the one I spend the most time on. I don?t really ?market? my business per se but have gotten the majority of my client base as a direct result of a relationship that developed on Twitter. I?ve never been the self-promotion type (it makes me uncomfortable) which is why I really don?t do any marketing. I?ve also been incredibly blessed with ?word of mouth? referrals.

Small Business Trends:?What?s your top tip for small business owners today?

Robin Carey:?Be prepared to change your model at any time.

Small Business Trends:?What?s one thing you never skimp on in your business?

Robin Carey:?Customer attention.

Small Business Trends:?If you could have one small biz superhero power, what would it be?

Robin Carey:?A great night?s sleep.

Hawkeye Management

Hawkeye ManagementHawkeye Management?provides lines of credit to small businesses of $50,000 to $100,000 or more. The company prides itself on its track record: to date, 70% of the business owners who apply for unsecured business credit through Hawkeye have been approved. With an industry average of only 10%, Hawkeye stands out in its ability to connect business owners with the right lenders. ?Tom Gazaway, President and CEO of Hawkeye Management, shares his insights:

Small Business Trends:?What?s one thing you never skimp on in your business?

Tom Gazaway:?Our brand. Don?t have a crappy logo, don?t put out bad content, don?t have bad business cards or a bad website.? Do it right or don?t do it.? There are a lot of things we may be ready for, but we won?t do it if we can?t do it well.? That doesn?t mean you won?t make mistakes, but shoot for perfection and settle for excellence.

Small Business Trends:?What role does social media play in marketing your business?

Tom Gazaway:?It?s integral.? We use tools like Hubspot, TweetDeck and Vocus to make our social media efforts more effective, efficient and measurable but you?re not a pioneer if you get on Twitter.? You?re a dinosaur if you?re not there.

Small Business Trends:?If you could have one small biz superhero power, what would it be?

Tom Gazaway:?I?m rarely and probably never the most talented, most gifted, or smartest guy in any audience but I have an unquenchable thirst to be better, grow our brand, and shake up the market. ?So passion can make up for a lot of things.

Research Access

Research AccessFor those with a passion for research,?Research Access?is the blog to read. It?s the effort of?Survey Analytics, which offers an enterprise grade research platform for collecting feedback to enable businesses, governments and consumers to participate and learn from each other. This blog, however, focuses on helping business people who are tasked with marketing research and includes videos, podcasts, and how-to posts on surveys, data tools, and analysis. ?Dana Stanley, VP of Marketing for Survey Analytics, answers our questions:
Small Business Trends: What?s your top tip for small business owners today?

Dana Stanley:?You may think market research is out of your budget, but technology has made it easier than ever to affordably get market feedback before making major business decisions. It can be inexpensive to do online surveys and get feedback on your products and services prior to investing your money and time in launching them. A small investment in research can pay off big.

Small Business Trends: If you were stuck on a desert island?with?internet, what would be the single app or website you couldn?t live without?

Dana Stanley:?Market researchers love information, so I?m going to have to go with Wikipedia. Not only does it have a shocking level of detail, it?s also updated seemingly to the minute on current events.

Small Business Trends:?If you could have one small biz superhero power, what would it be?

Dana Stanley:?As market researchers we?re obsessed with understanding the way customers think. So my small biz superhero power would be having the ability to read minds.

Adding Chrome, Gmail, and other Google services to Windows 8

Microsoft and Google might be archrivals on the business front, but they share a lot of customers. That means both companies have to grit their teeth and ensure that there?s at least some level of cooperation between the products that those shared customers use.

Chrome-Metro-and-desktop-icons-thumbnail

Google counts an enormous number of Windows users among its installed base for the Chrome browser and for services like Gmail and Google Apps. It can?t afford to ignore Windows 8.

Likewise, Microsoft would love to win those Chrome and Gmail users over to Internet Explorer, Office 365, and Outlook.com, but it has to accept the reality that many of those users have gone Google and aren?t coming back. So for Windows 8, Microsoft has to ensure that Google services work well out of the box.

It?s a classic example of co-opetition.

Over the past few days, I?ve been looking at the state of that relationship. Here?s a rundown of what Google customers can expect from Windows 8.

Gallery: Google and Windows 8, working together

Let's start with Google Chrome for Metro.

I know, I know. Technically, it's now Windows 8 mode, not Metro.

relaunch-chrome-in-windows8-mode-small

Microsoft has purged the Metro name from most of its developer documentation, but it lives on in the official guide for browser developers (including Google and Mozilla) who are developing Metro-style enabled desktop browsers. These are curious hybrids that will run both on the traditional desktop and as Windows 8 full-screen apps. Here?s a snippet or two from that documentation, last updated August 16, 2012:

In Windows 8, the browser that the user sets as the default for handling web pages and associated protocols may be designed to access both the Metro style experience as well as the traditional desktop experience.? This type of browser is called a Metro style enabled desktop browser.?

Chrome 21, the current shipping version of Google?s browser, already supports Metro mode. With this version, setting Chrome as the default browser changes its Start screen icon to the Windows 8 style. Clicking that icon takes you to the Metro-style browser; to switch to the desktop browser, you have to go to the desktop and click the Chrome icon there.

But Chrome version 23 (currently available via the Dev channel) changes this behavior significantly. Setting Chrome as the default browser changes its tile to Metro style. New options on the Chrome menu let you switch back and forth between Metro and desktop versions, reopening all current tabs in the other environment. The Start screen tile remembers your choice, so clicking it takes you to the environment you were last using.

I was able to install extensions in the Metro version of Chrome 21, but they lived in a separate profile from the desktop version. By contrast, extensions I installed in either version of Chrome 23 (Metro or desktop) showed up when switching browser modes. That?s a noteworthy differentiator between Google?s Metro browser and Microsoft?s plugin-free Internet Explorer 10 for Metro.

Changing the default browser to Chrome was more confusing than it should be. See the gallery for details of how this process works.

Need a hefty pet? 41-pound cat at Texas shelter

Associated Press

Posted on September 21, 2012 at 9:05 PM

RICHARDSON, Texas -- A Dallas-area animal shelter has a 41-pound fat cat named Skinny who needs a home.

Officials at the Richardson Animal Shelter are caring for the 5-year-old female orange tabby.

Kim Chapin with Richardson Animal Services said Friday that Skinny is "very sweet" and the largest cat she?s seen in her 21 years with the shelter.

City officials received a call about a stray cat in a yard and picked up the animal Sept. 13. Shelter officials thought Skinny was a male until a veterinarian examined the animal Friday.

Chapin says Skinny appears healthy except she is overweight and likely has diabetes. Blood tests were ordered.

Chapin says somebody apparently had been caring for the cat. Officials are not sure who owned the huge kitty.

How life arose on Earth: Researchers brew up organics on ice

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? Would you like icy organics with that? Maybe not in your coffee, but researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., are creating concoctions of organics, or carbon-bearing molecules, on ice in the lab, then zapping them with lasers. Their goal: to better understand how life arose on Earth.

In a new study published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, the research team provides the first direct look at the organic chemistry that takes place on icy particles in the frigid reaches of our solar system, and in the even chillier places between stars. Scientists think that the basic ingredients of life, including water and organics, began their journey to Earth on these lonesome ice particles. The ice and organics would have found their way into comets and asteroids, which then fell to Earth, delivering "prebiotic" ingredients that could have jump-started life.

The various steps needed to go from icy organics to slime molds are not clear, but the new findings help explain how the process works. The lab experiments show that organic material can begin the processing it needs to become prebiotic -- while still frozen in ice.

"The very basic steps needed for the evolution of life may have started in the coldest regions of our universe," said Murthy Gudipati, lead author of the new study at JPL. "We were surprised to see organic chemistry brewing up on ice, at these very cold temperatures in our lab."

The organics looked at in the study are called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs for short. These carbon-rich molecules can be found on Earth as combustion products: for example, in barbecue pits, candle soot and even streaming out of the tail pipe of your car. They have also been spotted throughout space in comets, asteroids and more distant objects. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has detected PAHs in the swirling planet-forming disks around stars, in the spaces between stars and in remote galaxies.

Murthy and his colleague Rui Yang of JPL used their lab setup to mimic the environment of icy PAH molecules in the quiet cold of space, at temperatures as low as 5 Kelvin (minus 450 degrees Fahrenheit, or minus 268 degrees Celsius). First, they bombarded the particles with ultraviolet radiation similar to that from stars. Then, to determine the products of the chemical reaction, they used a type of laser system known as MALDI (for Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption and Ionization), which involves zapping the ice with both infrared and ultraviolet lasers.

The results revealed that the PAHs had transformed: they had incorporated hydrogen atoms into their structure and lost their circular, aromatic bonds, becoming more complex organics. According to Gudipati, this is the type of change that would need to occur if the material were to eventually become amino acids and nucleotides -- bits and pieces of protein and DNA, respectively.

"PAHs are strong, stubborn molecules, so we were surprised to see them undergoing these chemical changes at such freezing-cold temperatures," said Gudipati.

Another bonus for the research is that it might explain the mystery of why PAHs have not yet been identified on ice grains in space. While the hardy organics are pervasive in the cosmos as gases and hot dust, researchers have remained puzzled that their signatures do not show up on ice. The new findings show that PAHs, once they stick to the ice surface, are chemically transformed into other complex organics, explaining why they might not be seen.

While the new results teach us that life's journey could have already begun in the very cold regions of the universe, another question remains: Did it arise elsewhere beyond our sun, too? Researchers don't know, but studies like this one help the ongoing search for life beyond Earth.

Shares of Apple top $700 for the first time

Can Apple chart its way beyond the $700 mark? Peter Misek, Jefferies analyst, explains why he has a "buy" rating on the stock and $900 price target.

By Roland Jones, NBC News

Shares of Apple moved above $700 for the first time ever Tuesday morning, boosted by a strong reception for the latest version of its popular iPhone -- the thinnest version of the smartphone that brings in the majority of Apple's profit and has helped it become the most valuable company in the world.

Demand for the new iPhone 5 is exceeding initial supply, according to reports. Apple said it booked 2 million orders in one day and pushed the delivery date for some pre-orders to next month.

Apple?s stock price has risen steadily over the past four months in anticipation of the new iPhone. The shares?are now up 33 percent since hitting a recent closing low on May 17.

Some analysts think Apple can go even higher.

Eric Jackson, an analyst at Ironfire Capital, sees Apple?s stock price rising to $1,650 a share by the end of 2015.

Jackson told CNBC recently that his outlook is based on Apple?s current products selling well and the company bringing out new products in the future that ?will be even more exciting and lead the stock even higher.?

Apple?s stock has soared past a number of milestones in recent months.

Shares of the technology giant hit the $600 mark for the first time ahead of the mid-March release of the new iPad, having closed above $500 for the first time on Feb. 13. Just before Christmas, on Dec. 23, Apple closed above $400 for the first time.

Reuters contributed to this report.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A deadly assault on a U.S. consulate in Libya was a spontaneous reaction to an anti-Muslim video, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said Sunday, even as Libya's president insisted the attackers spent months preparing and carefully choosing their date ? the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Unnerved by the rapidly escalating raid on Tuesday that claimed the life of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans, the Obama administration last week launched an investigation into whether terrorist groups had exploited outrage over an anti-Muslim video to trigger an attack long in the works.

But Ambassador Susan Rice said evidence gathered so far shows no indication of a premeditated or coordinated strike. She said the attack in Benghazi, powered by mortars and rocket-propelled grenades, appeared to be a copycat of demonstrations that had erupted hours earlier outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, spurred by a YouTube film attributed to a California man mocking the Prophet Muhammad.

"It seems to have been hijacked, let us say, by some individual clusters of extremists who came with heavier weapons," Rice said, adding that such weaponry is easy to come by in post-revolutionary Libya.

Whether those extremists had ties to al-Qaida or other terrorist groups has yet to be determined, Rice said, noting that the FBI has yet to complete its investigation.

Rice's depiction of the chain of events contrasted with one offered by Libya's Interim President Mohammed el-Megarif, who said Sunday there was no doubt the perpetrators had predetermined the date of the attack.

"It was planned, definitely. It was planned by foreigners, by people who entered the country a few months ago," el-Megarif said. "And they were planning this criminal act since their arrival."

Brushing aside el-Megarif's assessment, Rice said it wouldn't be the first time that Western works critical of Islam have triggered spontaneous unrest throughout the Middle East. She pointed to Salman Rushdie's novel "Satanic Verses" and cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad published by a Danish newspaper in 2006.

But Rep. Mike Rogers, the House Intelligence Committee chair, said it was premature to rule out a premeditated attack. A former FBI agent, Rogers, R-Mich., said there were too many coincidences to conclude the Benghazi attack hadn't been planned in advance.

"There's other information, classified information we have that just makes you stop for a minute and pause," Rogers said, without elaborating.

Added Arizona's Sen. John McCain, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee: "Most people don't bring rocket-propelled grenades and heavy weapons to a demonstration."

What started with protesters scaling the embassy wall in Cairo on Tuesday over an amateurish video deriding Islam's holiest figure has mushroomed into a maelstrom of disquiet throughout the Muslim world. In Libya, U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed when protesters stormed the consulate in Benghazi. Anti-U.S. protests in 20 countries led the Pentagon to dispatch elite Marine anti-terrorism teams to Libya and Yemen and to position two Navy warships off Libya's coast.

Meanwhile, the State Department ordered all nonessential U.S. government workers and their families out of Sudan and Tunisia. In Lebanon, protesters torched an American fast-food restaurant. Even as tensions appeared to be easing Saturday, al-Qaida's most active Mideast branch was calling for further attacks on U.S. embassies.

"It's approximately a reaction to this video, and it's a hateful video that had nothing to do with the United States and which we find disgusting and reprehensible," Rice said.

Rice's comments appeared to mark a departure from an earlier State Department position.

Citing the ongoing FBI probe, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Friday that until the Justice Department was ready to talk, no details would be released. "Not who they were, not how they happened, not what happened to Ambassador Stevens ? not any of it."

But the uncertainty of an anxious nation questioning what was gained by U.S. support for democratic, pro-Islamic uprisings in Muslim countries has created a sense of urgency that has been difficult for the Obama administration to ignore. The turbulence has also become a major issue in President Barack Obama's re-election campaign, with the Republican rival for the White House, Mitt Romney, laying blame on the president and accusing him of apologizing for the U.S.

Doubts also persist about whether security measures in place to protect U.S. diplomatic missions, which were overwhelmed in Benghazi, were sufficient.

Rice said the U.S. had "no actionable intelligence" about any imminent attack in Benghazi, and that security was beefed up in Cairo following signs that the YouTube video might spark protests. She said foreign governments are stepping up to condemn the violence and to fulfill their obligations to protect U.S. embassies.

Rice said it's too early to judge whether security should have been stronger in Libya. U.S. Marines, who commonly protect embassies abroad, were not assigned to the Benghazi consulate, the State Department has said. At the embassy in Cairo, Rice said, protections initially afforded by the Egyptian government fell short.

"When President Obama picked up the phone and spoke to the President (Mohammed) Morsi, right away things changed," Rice said. "And that's an evidence of our influence and our impact."

Rice and Rogers spoke on "Fox News Sunday," while el-Megarif and McCain spoke on CBS' "Face the Nation." Rice also appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press" and on "Face the Nation."

The Family Man (2000): Interview at Old Job

The clip interview at old job from The Family Man (2000) with Josef Sommer, Nicolas Cage We're really more of a boutique operation, as you can see. But you're not interested in boutique dollars. I get it. He's expecting you, Mr. Lassiter. Alan, this is Jack Campbell, the one I was telling you about. Of course. Jack. Hi. Mr. Mintz. No, just call me Alan. We like to cultivate a very casual atmosphere here. I can see that. What can I tell you? Do you have kids? Uh, actually, yes. Two of them. Good ones. Great, great. Why don't you have a seat? Peter mentioned to me that you're an avid CNBC watcher. But he didn't say whether you had any actual Wall Street experience. Um, I was a sales associate at E.F. Hutton. A broker, really? And now you're in the tire business? That's right. And auto supply. In the retail end, I understand. We get about 60 percent of our business from automotive service. And do you mind me asking what kind of sales you did in the last year? Just ball park. We did 1.7 million in total revenue. 1.7. That's great. And what do you project for this year? I think we're gonna have a banner year. Sales are up almost 20 percent in the first quarter, and we just landed a major trucking company account. You did? That's great. So that puts you just a tad over two million? That's right. And that would make us number one in our market. Excuse me. I'm gonna get a glass of water.
