Beyond SEO: Inbound marketing and your 2013 online marketing plan

Turn Your Web Site Into a Magnet for Customers with Inbound Marketing

Traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is dead.

There ? I said it. Not sleeping. Not pining for the fjords. Dead. As in doornail.

So should you start ignoring search engines? Not one bit; in fact, you should be paying more attention to them than ever. Let me explain.

? more ?

Let?s start with some basics.

SEO is all about taking your existing Web site and tweaking it ? changing some text, changing some code and building links back to it from other sites ??so that it appears higher in search engine results pages for keyword searches that matter to your business.

In my view ? and as it turns out, in Google?s view, too ? that focus is too narrow.

You see, when you focus so narrowly on inching your site up the Google search results you, frankly, end up doing some stupid stuff.

You end up packing the content of your site with so many keywords that it?s virtually unreadable, you end up creating hundreds and hundreds of junk Web sites in order to create links back to your site, you spam blogs with irrelevant messages about your product or service.

Just dumb stuff that doesn?t create value for anybody anywhere.

With an Inbound Marketing approach your focus is much broader ? and more tightly tied to real, meaningful business results for you.

Inbound Marketing is all about using great ??some would say exceptional ?? online content to help your prospective customers find your business, become a lead and ultimately to become your paying customer.

Search engine results ? and appearing prominently in them ? are still important. Search engines are ? and will be for some time to come ??probably the most important way for people to find products and services they?re looking for.

But in traditional SEO, the success metric is how high your site ranks for a given keyword. While in Inbound Marketing, the key metric is how effective your site content is at drawing people to it and how effective it is at converting those people into your paying customers.

Do you see the difference?

The Inbound Marketing playbook focuses on using all of the tools of online marketing, with great content at the hub:

  • Great, frequently updated online content improves search engine visibility and traffic to your site while it helps to educate your prospective clients
  • Social media tools help to amplify your message and engage your prospects
  • Effective content offers (again) and strong calls to action help to turn visitors to your site into leads
  • And more content (again), often delivered via email and social media, can help to educate those leads to a point where they?re ready to buy and more likely to buy from you than from your competitors.

In the Inbound Marketing playbook, SEO is only one small tactical element that?s at the service of bigger, more important business goals.

And it works!

Companies that use Inbound Marketing have far lower costs for acquiring each of their customers than companies using a hodgepodge of traditional marketing techniques.

And Google now rewards inbound marketers more than traditional SEO. With recent changes to the formula Google uses to generate search results, high quality, frequently updated content is now one of the most important factors in determining search engine rankings for your site.

That?s why Inbound Marketing deserves a place in your business? marketing plan for 2013.

The Colombian government's estimate that the?FARC?makes up to $3.5 billion annually in profits from the?drug trade is staggering, but may not be entirely accurate.

Speaking at a forum organized by the University of Miami on Oct. 23, Colombian Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon provided the government?s latest figures on the illicit activities of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). According to Pinzon, the FARC makes between $2.4 and $3.5 billion annually from the drug trade. He added that of the 350 tons of cocaine produced in Colombia annually, some 200 can be linked back to the guerrillas.

Whereas the FARC were believed to have some 20,000 fighters at their peak in 2000, Pinzon said that they currently number 8,147, a drop of more than 50 percent in the past decade. Still, he noted that the rebels are ?a very different organization? than before, having lost several top commanders in recent years.

InSight Crime Analysis

Estimating the size of the FARC?s total budget is an inexact science. Pinzon?s estimate of the rebels? profits from the drug trade differs widely from a recent calculation released by the Attorney General?s Office, which put their total profits at around $1.1 billion. Both of these assessments are far higher than the United Nations Development program?s calculation in 2003, which listed the FARC?s annual income at no more than $342 million, with $204 million coming from the drug trade.

Additionally, Pinzon?s assertion that the FARC are ?linked? to nearly two-thirds of cocaine produced in Colombia is a deceptively broad statement. These links can range from involvement in overseeing the early stages of coca cultivation and processing to directly exporting shipments of the drug into neighboring countries like Venezuela or Ecuador. While the guerrillas have been known to participate in the latter, the former arrangement is more common.

Ultimately it may be best to take Pinzon?s figures with a grain of salt. He is likely playing the hardline "bad cop" at the same time as the government enters into peace talks with the guerrillas to try to end the country's five-decade-old conflict. At the negotiating table the FARC are recognized as having political aspirations and their involvement in the drug trade is barely on the agenda for the talks. By focusing on the rebels? criminal activities in his public comments, Pinzon may be sending a signal to FARC leaders that a failure to follow through on the peace process could see them permanently labelled as nothing more than "narco-terrorists."

How Colleges Actually Use Social Media [Infographic] | EdTech ...

Colleges and universities are clamoring for the attention of today?s college students who are always connected. But with heavy competition from social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest, the attention of millennials can be hard to keep. With that, it is no surprise that colleges and universities have embraced social media as a means to engage students.

A study by the UMass Darmouth showed that, of the colleges surveyed, a whopping 100 percent are using social media. The results of the study are featured in a new infographic developed by bestcollegesonline.com.

When it comes to reaching a target audience, social media trumps traditional media: one in three schools find social media more efficient. In using social media, the primary goals are to engage alumni and maintain the college?s brand image.

For colleges and universities, Facebook reigns supreme as the social network most successful at meeting goals.

Are colleges successful when it comes to using social media? Sixty-five percent of colleges would say they are ?somewhat successful.? A confident 2 percent of colleges would consider their social media strategies a ?model of success.?

Check out the full infographic below to learn more about how colleges use social media.

7 Simple Steps to Book Marketing | Net Marketing Book Reviews ...

Posted on Oct 21, 2012 in Articles | 0 comments logo

So, you?ve taken the plunge and written your book. Now what? It is time for editing, cover graphic and layout; then off to the printer or digital converter. If you have already done so, good for you. If not, then those next steps are critical to the success of your book. Be sure your title, cover and layout are strong enough to effectively grab the eye of your reading public. But, if you already have your book or eBook ready for distribution what do you do next? MARKET! Oh but of course. I hear you thinking perhaps even out loud, ?Easy for you to say, but how do I do it??

First, the distribution channel you chose will make all the difference in the amount of work ahead of you. If you are truly going it solo then you will have to upload your book or eBook to each and every available retail outlet; and there are a ton of them out there. Amazon and Barnes & Noble are NOT the only book resellers ? and, these types of resale outlets are difficult to get into and expect a huge discount, usually 55-70%.

Alternatively, you could hire a small publishing assistance firm to help you. These types of firms can upload your publication one time and make it instantly available to the whole lot of distribution sources through the Ingram book catalog. What or who is Ingram? Well, they are just the biggest book catalog and where resellers turn to for the latest and best books for their outlets; yes, this includes Amazon and B&N. True, depending on the firm, they will keep 10-20% of your after discount and printing fee commission. But, for all the work they will save you and their ability to get your book listing in Ingram?s catalog, this is peanuts.

So, now how do you begin marketing? The answer is not a simple one. In fact there are hundreds of ways available to the enthusiastic author. To choose those which you are willing to do is the task at hand. If you are independently wealthy, you might consider hiring a marketing firm. But for the vast majority of us, marketing our books falls deftly on our shoulders. Herein I will share a mere 10 ways to market your book or eBook.

1. Article Marketing

This avenue entails more writing, which, hey, if you are an author you are pretty good at and should be a piece of cake, so to speak. Write articles that speak about the subject of your book and are informative. Excerpts from your work should be considered for inclusion. Even if you want to write about a different topic than your book or eBook touches you can still use article marketing to your advantage. How? Easy, include the link to your work in the author resource section provided by the article house.

The key here is to not write and submit one article to one article house, but many articles over a period of time to many article houses. Some of the ones that I have used in the past are EzineArticles, Article Garden, GoArticles, Self Growth, ISnare, and Associated Content. Some of these are paid while others are free submission sites. Also, Free Article Submission Organization has a list of 1,000 submission sites if you are up to the task.

2. Newsletter Marketing

On the same direction, offering a newsletter or ezine can help you sell your book. This again takes a firm commitment as you will need to provide your ezine or newsletter on a regular basis, without fail! Content is key. If the content is not informative you will lose your hard sought readership; and readers are what you are after, after all.

Some newsletter/ezine providers are free while others are vastly costly. Three that I am familiar with and have used in the past are Constant Contact, Your Mailing List Provider and of course AWeber. The greatest benefit to newsletter marketing is building your list of contacts who read and enjoy your content. These are the readers who will most likely buy your books and eBooks once you make them aware of their availability.

3. Teleseminar/Webinar

Public speaking made easy. That is how I see these events. While giving you the opportunity to practice your speaking talents you will find these less costly and easier to effect. No hotel bill, no travel expenses, and a willing audience. However, scheduling of these events must fit not only your audience, but your schedule too. Too late and you may lose your opposite coast listeners; too early and you risk losing your target audience; working folks and parents.

If you don?t know where to start looking for the right host or club simply ask around. Your friends might just know of a host that is the perfect fit for your subject. Be aware of and familiar with the technology that will be used. Will it be a video conference or just audio, such as the telephone provides? Will you be able to use a whiteboard or other interactive tools or just speak? Knowing your venue before your presentation will help you put together the right information in a manner that will engage your audience.

Be sure you know the audience that your host or hostess is in touch with. Don?t just give the same information to everyone. Meld your topic to fit the audience. For example, as I mention in my book Presentational Skills for the Next Generation, if you are speaking to children you would use examples that they are familiar with while when speaking to a scientific convention you would use more technical terms and such. A singles group wouldn?t be apt to care about your stories of familial significance as much as a single parent?s group. The key here is to make the material relevant to your audience. Use examples that fit your listeners.

4. Public Speaking

Vastly similar to Teleseminar/Webinars is public speaking. However, this involves doing so in person. Whether you offer to be a guest speaker for pay or for free this is up to you. However, many groups and organizations need speakers. Each time you speak in front of a group you get better and more at ease. Besides growing into an interesting speaker these events give you the opportunity to sell your book to an eager public. The more you books you sell directly from the ?back of the room? or your ?trunk? the more money stays in your pocket.

Book clubs order thousands of units. So, you should definitely attempt to use these to market your book. Offer to speak at your next local book club meeting. If you can?t afford to travel, offer to speak at your local clubs. Rotary, Chambers and such are just a few other ideas. Remember, they need you as much as you need them.

5. Blogging

Blogs are terrific tools for authors. They allow you to instantly interact with your audience. Be aware that you will need to offer interesting and relevant content on a regular schedule. If time is an issue for you, you can either hire a Virtual Assistant (VA) or use other blogs as in a Blog Tour. I probably don?t need to list blog hosts, but WordPress is my blog of choice.

6. Book Trailers

With people?s attention spans getting shorter and shorter book trailers are fast becoming an author?s tool of choice. While costs can vary between one and several thousand dollars these can be just the spark that will sell your book. Consider carefully before you buy. Check out the quality of previous offerings; don?t just go with the cheapest price. One that I have found to offer both good quality and affordable pricing is Master Koda, master marketer Kim Emerson?s latest venture.

7. Press Releases

No marketing plan would be complete without the tried and true press release. Notice the ?s? in the title. That?s right. Not just one, but many are needed. Time them out; don?t just put them all up at one time. Also, remember what a press release is and what it is not. It is a newsworthy information piece, not a sales letter.

There are a few companies who will help you write and submit your press release. Be sure to use both online and offline submission sites. Using fax blasting as well as online submission sites will multiply your efforts. Also, focus on your local area as they are more interested in promoting you than would be a newspaper all across the country.

This is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. To ensure the success of your book or eBook it is up to you, the author, to promote your work. These are just a few to get you started. For more ideas search the web or hire a marketing firm that can further assist you to reach the Best Seller status you and your book deserve.

In vitro fertilization linked to increase risk for birth defects

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2012) ? In vitro fertilization (IVF) may significantly increase the risk of birth defects, particularly those of the eye, heart, reproductive organs and urinary systems, according to new research presented on Oct. 20, at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans.

According to the study, despite increasing use of IVF in the United States, associations between birth defects and IVF are poorly understood. Management of birth defects comprises a large part of pediatric surgical care and demands significant health care resources.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, California has the highest rate of IVF usage in the United States. In the abstract, "Congenital Malformations Associated with Assisted Reproductive Technology: A California Statewide Analysis," researchers examined infants born in California from 2006-2007 after IVF and other treatments such as fertility-enhancing drugs or artificial insemination. Researchers examined maternal age, race, the number of times the mother had given birth, infant gender, year of birth and presence of major birth defects.

"Our findings included a significant association between the use of assisted reproductive technology, such as certain types of in vitro fertilization, and an increased risk of birth defects," said study author Lorraine Kelley-Quon, MD, a general surgery resident at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, who conducted the research at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA.

Overall, 3,463 infants with major birth defects were identified among 4,795 infants born after IVF and 46,025 naturally conceived infants with similar maternal demographics. Birth defects were significantly increased for infants born after IVF -- 9 percent versus 6.6 percent for naturally conceived infants, even after controlling for maternal factors. Specifically, malformations of the eye (0.3 percent versus 0.2 percent), heart (5 percent versus 3 percent), and genitourinary system (1.5 percent versus 1 percent) were greater in IVF infants. Overall, an IVF infant's odds of birth defects were 1.25 times greater than that of a naturally conceived infant with similar maternal characteristics. Risk of birth defects after other fertility treatments such as artificial insemination or ovulation induction alone were not significant.

"For parents considering in vitro fertilization or other forms of assisted reproductive technology, it is important that they understand and discuss with their doctor the potential risks of the procedure before making a decision," said Kelley-Quon.

Samsung Mobile Print (for iPhone)

Samsung Mobile Print (for iPhone) offers a decent feature set for a mobile printing app, and it's worth downloading by owners of Wi-Fi enabled Samsung printers and multi-function printers (MFPs) who want to print from or scan to their iPhone. It works better with the latest iPhones, but any Samsung owner can benefit from it.

Basics
Samsung Mobile Print (for iPhone) is available for free through the iTunes app store; the same app is good for both the iPhone and iPad?Samsung MobilePrint for Android version is also available. Samsung Mobile Print lets you print to any Samsung wireless or network-connected printer or multifunction printer (MFP) (including USB-connected models) on the same LAN as your iPhone, and scan from any Samsung MFP on the network. I tested this app using a Samsung CLX-6260FW multifunction printer (MFP) and both an iPhone 4 and iPhone 5.

The app automatically detects Samsung networked printers, but in certain cases (such as if the printer is USB connected), you may have to add it manually, a straightforward process described in the Help menu. Once you've selected the printer, you're ready to go.

At the top of the screen is a bar with four items: Print, Scan, About, and Help, with Print and Scan being the app's main divisions.

Printing
When you touch the Print icon, you enter the printing half of the app, and are presented with six sources: Photo, Camera, Web, Document, Clipboard, and Google Docs.

You can print documents you've saved in your document folder, either ones you've scanned or ones you've imported to your iPhone. Samsung Mobile Print prints documents in standard Office, image, and PDF formats, at a range of paper sizes and thicknesses, in portrait or landscape orientation, in color or grayscale, in simplex (one-sided) or duplex (two-sided) modes. It has a similar range of settings for printing photos. I noticed a couple of issues. Some photos printed with a slight greenish tinge, which was absent when I printed these images to the same printer by other methods. There were occasional misformats; for example, a PowerPoint presentation with line breaks in the middle of words.

Printing from the clipboard is a useful function. You can print text or images copied from Web pages and applications that support copying. Using the Web browser, you can add bookmarks, but you can't import them. The app did reasonably well in formatting Web pages for printing, though occasionally it would crop the top or side of a document. Also, it would sometimes preview pop-ups (after I'd closed them) instead of the the article I was trying to print.

Google Docs is the only cloud-based service directly supported (with a dedicated button) by Samsung Mobile Print. You can print documents shared from some other services such as Dropbox, but you have to either first access the document in that service, select Open In and choose Samsung Mobile Print, or else open the cloud service's URL in Web mode.

In printing, as well as in scanning with my iPhone 4, I occasionally got a Low Memory warning, after which the app would fail to perform the intended function. Sometimes, it was in obviously memory-intensive tasks (like scanning at high resolution), sometimes not. Worse, the app would occasionally freeze. Closing and reopening the app didn't help; I'd have to turn my phone on and off to unfreeze it. I didn't encounter these issues after I upgraded to the iPhone 5 in the middle of testing.

Scanning
Scanning with Samsung Mobile Print on the iPhone is less useful than with the iPad, simply because the screen?even on the iPhone 5?is much smaller and so it's harder to read and view scanned documents. ?That said, you can always offload the scanned images to your PC, or email them elsewhere, when you have a chance.

You can scan either to Documents (a folder solely for scanned documents) or Photos (your photo stream). In scanning to Documents, you can choose between PDF, PNG, and JPEG; scanning to Photos is JPEG-only.? You can choose color or grayscale; low, normal, or high quality; and sizes including 3.5 by 5, 4 by 6, 5 by 7, letter, legal, and A4; and scanning from the flatbed or ADF.

Scanning, by and large, was easy, and it generally worked as billed. One issue I encountered a couple of times is that Samsung Mobile Print would not detect the scanner, even though it had no problem recognizing the printer, even though they're parts of the same MFP. Most of the time, though, the app would both print and scan.

Exchanging Files
There are several ways of transferring files from a computer to your iPhone and the app: through iTunes, a server, a Web browser, or mapping a network drive. They're described thoroughly in Help. iTunes is dependable, and using a Web browser (by entering your iPhone's server URL) is fairly easy.

Help
Tapping on Help brings up a pull-down menu, divided into seven sections: Samsung Mobile Print; Choosing a device; Printing; Scanning; File Sharing; Customization; and Troubleshooting. Touching any of the items within one of these sections brings up instructions, for example, for Printing Content from the Clipboard. I found the instructions to be clear and concise. At the bottom of the page are a Home button, which takes you back to the drop-down menu, and right and left arrows to move through Help item by item.

Conclusion
Samsung Mobile Print (for iPhone) is a worthy app for those who need to print to Samsung printers or scan from Samsung MFPs. Your experience will be better with a recent model iPhone, as I experienced memory issues and crashes with the iPhone 4, but, even with the older model, it is well worth downloading if you have a compatible printer.

(AP) ? U.S. government safety regulators are investigating complaints that engines on Jeep Patriot SUVs can stall without warning at highway speeds.

The problem caused one crash in which two people were hurt, according to documents posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

The investigation affects about 112,000 Patriots from the 2011 and 2012 model years that were sold in the U.S. Chrysler Group LLC, the maker of Jeeps, sold another 18,000 in Canada.

NHTSA said Friday that it received a dozen complaints about stalling. Ten of the incidents occurred while the Jeeps were going 65 miles per hour or faster. In eight cases the Patriots could not be restarted and had to be towed.

"The complaints show an apparent increasing trend, with all but three received within the past six months," NHTSA said.

In one complaint, a Subaru driver told NHTSA that on May 2, a Patriot's engine died while it was on Interstate 5 on the West Coast. The Subaru was behind the Patriot when it happened, and the woman driving the SUV did not hit the brakes, according to the complaint. "I did not see a brake light, and it took me a couple of seconds to realize she had slowed," the Subaru driver wrote. "By the time I slammed on my brakes, I hit her. I was still going 55 mph."

The Subaru's air bags inflated, and the crash injured the Subaru driver and seriously hurt the driver's 85-year-old mother, who was a passenger, according to the complaint. NHTSA does not identify people who file complaints or say where they are from.

Chrysler said it is cooperating with NHTSA and that the Patriot has an excellent safety record. Patriot owners who are concerned about their vehicles should contact their dealer, the company said.

NHTSA said it will investigate to see whether the problem is widespread enough to order a recall. So far the Patriots have not been recalled.

Increased Funds, Modest Expectations for U.S.'s Largest Nonprofits ...

This week, The Chronicle of Philanthropy published the 2012 edition of the Philanthropy 400, its annual look at the 400 charities in the United States that raise the most from private sources.

The news was mixed: these top 400 nonprofits reported a strong growth in funds over the previous year, but were not as optimistic about their fortunes in 2012.

The median gain in funds raised for these charities was 7.5 percent, the third straight year of median gains in the Philanthropy 400 rankings. Eleven of the top 20 reported raising more money now than before 2008?s financial crisis, while others like United Way Worldwide continue to struggle to rebound.

Visit the Chronicle?s Philanthropy 400 section for more insights about their new report (subscription required for some articles).

On the other hand, many of the Philanthropy 400 were less optimistic about this trend continuing in 2012. The median forecast for this year was growth of less than 1 percent.

Other research has indicated that these top 400 nonprofits are outpacing the rest of the nonprofit sector. The Giving USA report released earlier this year showed an overall increase of 3.9% in nationwide giving. MCF?s just-released Giving in Minnesota, 2012 Edition showed a 2.6% increase in Minnesota giving over the previous year.

Just another crazy NFL Sunday

Ravens' Boldin eludes Cowboys' Carr for a first down in the first half of their NFL football game in BaltimoreReuters

Was it even possible to follow all of the action in the NFL this Sunday?

If you were watching the Lions come from behind and beat the Eagles in overtime, did that make you miss the Cowboys? failed comeback in Baltimore, where Dallas missed a game-winning field goal as time expired? Maybe you were watching the undefeated Falcons need a 55-yard field goal with one second left to beat a surprisingly game Raiders team. But if you were, did you miss the Dolphins improve to 3-3 with a surprisingly stout defense and a surprisingly effective rookie quarterback in Ryan Tannehill? And if you watched the Browns get their first win of the year, how were you supposed to follow along as the Jets blew out the Colts and made a statement that they?re a serious team, not a circus?

And that?s just some of the early-afternoon action. In the late afternoon games, the other New York team made a statement as the Giants pounded the 49ers. But if you were watching that game, you missed an absolutely amazing sequence of events ? Russell Wilson throwing the second of his two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to lead the Seahawks over the Patriots, Robert Griffin III running for a 76-yard touchdown to seal the Redskins? win over the Vikings and Jay Feely missing a 39-yard game-winning field goal, just moments after he had made a 61-yard field goal to force overtime for the Cardinals in a game they?d ultimately lose to the Bills ? that all happened almost simultaneously.

This was an amazing Sunday of NFL action, but that?s what we?ve grown accustomed to. Week in and week out, the NFL is the best program on television. The NFL?s drama is more compelling than anything anyone could script. And we?ve still got 11 more regular-season Sundays to go.

Here are my other thoughts on the wild day in the NFL:

What Madden Curse? Lions receiver Calvin Johnson was the cover boy for this year?s Madden video game, but there?s no evidence of any curse. In Sunday?s win over the Eagles, Johnson caught six passes for 135 yards, and he?s now on pace for 1,786 this season ? more than 100 yards better than his league-leading total last year. If anyone can kill the Madden Curse, it?s Megatron.

The NFL uniform police are pretty silly. Colts receiver Reggie Wayne wore orange gloves last week because orange is the color used to denote leukemia awareness, and Wayne wanted to honor coach Chuck Pagano, who?s battling leukemia. This week ESPN reported that the NFL told Wayne he couldn?t wear the orange gloves anymore. I realize uniforms are supposed to be, well, uniform, but there?s no reason that during a month when the league is painting everything pink for breast cancer awareness, there?s no reason they couldn?t have allowed Wayne to keep wearing the orange gloves.

Rookie quarterbacks continue to impress. It?s stunning how good these rookie passers are. Seattle?s Russell Wilson had 293 passing yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 133.7 passer rating ? the highest passer rating of any quarterback in any game on Sunday afternoon ? in a win over New England. Cleveland?s Brandon Weeden threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns as the Browns beat the Bengals. Ryan Tannehill completed 21 of 29 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions as the Dolphins beat the Rams. Robert Griffin III had about as good a running game as you?ll ever see from a quarterback, gaining 138 yards and two touchdowns, as the Redskins beat the Vikings. The Colts? Andrew Luck was the one rookie quarterback who didn?t lead his team to a win this week, but as we discussed last week, he?s already shown plenty of reasons to believe that he?s going to be an excellent quarterback for many years. There was a time when quarterbacks coming out of college needed some time to adjust to the pro game, but that time has passed. These rookie quarterbacks are ready to play, and play well, right now.

Larry Fitzgerald?s amazing career continues. Fitzgerald?s 93 receiving yards put him at 10,045 yards for his career. At 29 years and 44 days old, Fitzgerald has joined Randy Moss as the only receivers to top 10,000 yards before turning 30. What?s really impressive about Fitzgerald, however, is that he has played most of his career with subpar quarterbacks. Other than a few years with Kurt Warner, Fitzgerald has been stuck with the Josh McCowns, Matt Leinarts, Derek Andersons, Kevin Kolbs and John Skeltons of the world. To put up numbers like Fitzgerald while playing with quarterbacks like that is remarkable. It?s also remarkable that Fitzgerald has remained a perfect teammate who never, ever complains that the Cardinals? quarterbacks aren?t getting the job done.

The Patriots? pass defense is a mess. After giving up six passing plays of 20 or more yards in Sunday?s loss to Seattle, the Patriots have now given up 33 such passing plays so far this season ? by far the most of any team in the NFL. New England?s secondary just isn?t good enough, and if Bill Belichick can?t get it straightened out, I have a hard time seeing New England winning a playoff game against a good quarterback.

The Packers aren?t going down without a fight. The Texans entered Sunday looking like the best team in the league. The Packers took it to them on Sunday night in Houston. Coming off a disappointing loss to the Colts last week, the Packers needed to play their best game of the season. And that?s exactly what they did.

DRIVEN: Toyota Camry 2.5V Test Drive Report

The Toyota Camry is a car ?enthusiasts? love to hate. It?s an uncle car, big and boring, overpriced and underspecced, they say. Rubbish, some might add. For an online reviewer to say that it?s decent would be akin to running across a firing line. Online? Without the scrutiny of active feedback from you, dear readers, papers and car mags can get away with almost anything.

Anyway, we believe there?s a car for everyone, and one that?s not to your personal taste doesn?t make it a bad car. After drving this XV50 Camry 2.5V for few days, not only am I quite fond of it, I now fully understand why the Camry is such a popular car, the default big sedan that racks up sales Koreans dream about in our part of the world.

First, let?s get some niggles out of the way. There?s no Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) available, even on our range topping RM180,900 2.5V. This is either very stingy or a big oversight on Toyota?s part, especially when the previous Camry had it. Needs to be rectified for the facelift, if not sooner.

Looks wise, I prefer the quiet elegance of the previous model (pre-facelift was even smoother) than the sharper ?more dynamic? lines of this Camry. Could be just me, but it looks a little forced. Perhaps they wanted to incorporate ?more Lexus? into the image, but those who prioritise eye-catching design won?t be looking this way, not with the Sonata and Optima in town.

The chiselled new face, dominated by that huge chromed grille, is bolder but a bit fussy, and those LED strips below the fog lamps can?t be anything but an afterthought. There?s more adventure then you?d expect from Toyota?s designers though ? there?s an arc that rises from the headlamps, diving down to meet the rising belt line for a signature character stroke.

Another unique cue is the way the car?s sides don?t meld into the front and rear surfaces, and are instead ?cut off? quite severely. Toyota calls this ?aero corner design? and it helps simplify air flow, aiding aerodynamics along with the discreet ?aero stabilising fin? behind the wing mirrors and under-floor covers.

Moving inside, I like the simplicity of this new dashboard. Same amount of functions, via less buttons ? a completely opposite approach from the Honda Accord.

Another plus point for me is the rich meter panel, now incorporating a fuel-consumption section (needle for average FC, light bar for instantaneous) and a two-tier trip meter. When the latter shows average FC and range, I rarely need to jog it via the steering buttons. And like most new cars, an ECO light is included to coach your right foot.

It has to be said though that the more spartan feel (?feel? because there are no less functions than before) and plain black plastic on the centre stack do little to add to the impression of luxury, something that the previous car did better. Points are clawed back with the stitched dashboard, stereo knobs with fine cut surfacing and a richly-lined handphone slot below the AC panel.

If wood is a must, then they?ve done all they can to make the cabin look ?younger? compared to the previous Camry and the Nissan Teana. The black-beige colour combo is right for me, especially in a car like this. The lighter hue provides an expansive feel, while the contrasting black (dashboard, steering, door caps) adds dynamism. Better than the Teana?s different shades of beige theme, I think.

Let?s not forget the Camry specials. Things like a powered rear blind, manual rear window blinds and shoulder switches give the Camry a touch of limo appeal. The latter is located on the side of the front passenger seat, allowing the driver to adjust that seat electrically without bending over and stretching. Ferrying the family over the weekend, I used it often.

Speaking of limo appeal, rear occupants can really sit back and relax, like a boss. Besides the features above, the Camry?s front passenger headrest can be folded down for a better view.

The rear bench seating position is good (base not too low, seat back angle not too reclined) and there?s plenty of knee and legroom, more than before thanks to reshaped front seat backs and centre console, which houses air vents. The Camry?s exterior dimensions, 2,775 mm wheelbase included, are unchanged, but packaging has been improved to realise better cabin space.

Kit wise, our 2.5V came with niceties like HID projectors (across the range), eight-way powered seats with electric lumbar for the driver, touch-screen DVD-AVN system with USB, AUX, Bluetooth and reverse camera, front and side airbags, plus keyless entry with push start button.

Good stuff, but for the money, I would have liked an anti-glare rear view mirror (current one is a thin, cheap looking unit) and wing mirrors that auto fold along with the keyless entry. There?s also no auto headlamps and wipers.

Much has been said about the rise of the Koreans, who are doing a great job, but this new Camry is proof (or rather reminder) that Toyota really knows how to make a big sedan work. No edgy design or fancy glass roof here, just a very comfortable and effortless cruiser.

The 2AR-FE 2.5-litre engine (Dual VVTi, 181 PS, 231 Nm) is very well insulated and smooth revving, and the way it picks up speed with that strong mid range is impressive.

Same goes for the silky six-speed auto gearbox, which is a good balance between smoothness and speed ? changing gears is not so sharp till you feel it, but it does not overlap and slur its way around either. Judgement and perception is very good, which is why I never felt the need to use manual mode.

There?s a slickness and effortlessness to this drivetrain that?s missing in say, a Hyundai Sonata, which is more rough around the edges, and the hushed way the Camry goes about its business should appeal to more in this segment than charismatic nemesis Honda Accord.

The Camry is a smooth operator, which is why I was surprised at the higher than expected vibration at idle, which isn?t in character. Could be an isolated case, but even if not, I reckon that it?s not something that many would notice, only because we?re serial testers.

Some might say that the Camry has always been smooth. True, but it has never been this competent when hustled. The big Toyota is still not a driver?s car, or even as nice to drive hard down a B-road than an Accord, but it doesn?t feel as uncomfortable as before should you insist.

The steering has surprising weight to it, too. Not much feel, but its precision and weight alone makes the Camry a sharper tool than before. Trunk road driving is not a nightmare as many keen drivers would expect ? tyres squeal very early on, and there?s quite a bit of roll, but body control is decent.

Ride comfort is good, and the primary high-speed ride isn?t disconcertingly floaty. Road and wind noise are very well insulated, adding to the XV50?s mile munching cruiser appeal. The Camry has always been a smooth operator, but this time around, the dynamics have caught up a little.

Living with it for a few days, I can understand why the Camry is so popular with the conservative buyer. It?s not the most exciting player around (far from it), there are spec (too low) and price (too high) issues, and there?s that image problem with younger folks; but Toyota understands what the bulk of D-segment buyers want, and executes the plan well, on the 2.5V at least.

Of course, there?s also the strong resale value and service network the brand commands, things that are high up the priority list of many car buyers.

I?m pleasantly surprised. The uncle never had it this good.

Mobile subscriptions top 6 billion globally: report

9 hrs.

A recent study on mobile and Internet consumption around the world has some surprising numbers, not least of which is that there are almost as many cellphone subscriptions as there are people in the world.

The report, by the International Telecommunication Union, surveyed mobile and broadband use across the globe, and as expected, mobile usage continues to grow like crazy. The group?counted more than 6?billion mobile subscribers at the end of 2011.

Keep in mind that these are mobile subscriptions, not mobile phones or people with subscriptions. Many people have multiple subscriptions for a number of reasons, and businesses often have plans allotted to their employees. Even so, one subscription for every person in the world is a serious milestone.

The ITU also ranked countries based on mobile and broadband adoption and availability ? interestingly,?the U.S. isn't even in the top 10. South Korea is No. 1, followed by the cold, north end of Europe: Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland.

Big countries like the U.S., India, and China account for a lot of mobile subscriptions (India and China each contribute a billion to the total), but their large size and enormous populations prevent broadband from reaching rural areas and areas where there is?urban sprawl. It's much easier to wire a small country like Iceland.

The full report will set you back 84 Swiss Francs, or about $90, but you can read a bit more at the press release describing its main features.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC?News Digital. His personal website is?coldewey.cc.

REPORT: Mobile Advertising Revenues Are Going Crazy - Business ...

Mobile advertising is on fire.

According to a report released today by the Interactive Advertising Bureau, mobile ad revenues have increased 92 percent in the last year, rising from $344 million in Q2 2011 to $661 million in Q2 2012.

Digital advertising revenues had an increase of 14 percent in the first six months of 2012, growing from $14.9 billion in 2011 to $17 billion in Q2 2012. Although it's interesting to note that 73 percent of digital advertising dollars are spent on 10 ad-selling companies, and the remainder is spread across approximately 75 other companies.

In spite of the rapid growth of digital and mobile advertising, it's search that's on top, accounting for 47 percent of total digital revenues with $4.1 billion in revenue.

Here's a breakdown of the data:

Historically search has retained the largest share of advertising revenues, but as the chart below shows, even though mobile's the youngest format, it had the largest percent revenue increase between 2010 and 2012.

Good Design ? TYPO London 2012: Social

On October 10, 2012 by JoeM

With just over a week to go until TYPO London 2012, it is fair to say that the excitement levels are running high here in the Good Design camp.?TYPO?s slightly tongue in cheek claim: ?International Design Conferences: Design, culture, society ? with a little bit?of kerning? is based on the fact that the conferences began in 1995 with a strong focus in typography. Since then, they?have evolved into a much broader platform exploring communication and design, digital media, marketing and?advertising, technology, culture, entertainment and business. In an eclectic mix of talks, influential thinkers cover?social trends, ideas, concepts, technological innovation and the valid principles of good design.

With this in mind you can understand why I am very pleased to announce that Good Design will be both attending and covering the two day event next week. ?This years theme is ?Social? so I am very interested to see how the speakers explore the role of the socially minded creative in todays society, plus I will be examining TYPO?s role in the creative community in enabling this type of creative to flourish. Stay tuned for a live twitter feed of the event on our twitter feed.

Please find below a full press release for TYPO London 2012: Social. As you will see it is a stella line up of speakers with some of the biggest names from the world of design and the creative industries. I am very much looking forward to bringing you a full low down in a few weeks time. If you are quick there are still the last few tickets going as well as the chance to win a couple on the TYPO London?website, so hurry!

Typo London 2012: Social

Much like for its London premiere in 2011, we have managed to assemble an outstanding lineup of speakers,?consisting of A-list stars from the world of graphic design and beyond?, says Head of Programme Adrian?Shaughnessy (pictured above). ?Over 25 communication and design, digital media, marketing and advertising, technology, culture,?entertainment and business experts have con!rmed so far, with some exciting additions still to be announced.

Vaughan Oliver for example, who in the eyes of many is the epitome of the graphic designer as artist. His record?covers for the mythical 4AD label are examples of graphic design at its most poetic and emotive. As one reviewer?wrote recently about Oliver?s deluxe packaging of the all the Pixies albums: ?? it?s not really a music collectible but?rather a graphic art collectible. It?s an awesome thing.?

Tony Chambers is one of the very few art directors in charge of a high pro!le magazines. He has been Editor-In-Chief?of Wallpaper*, one of the great success stories in magazine publishing, since March 2007.

Kate Moross is a prolific graphic artist, art director and filmmaker who has worked extensively within the music?industry. She works as art director for Simian Mobile Disco, Jessie Ware and L-Vis 1990. Her commercial clients?include Nike, Kiehl?s, Glastonbury, Nokia, and Cadbury. Creative Review spotted Kate?s potential when she was still a?student: ?Moross? work is wonderfully varied in style though invariably colourful and eye-catching, as she utilises?hand-drawn elements, isometric and interlocking shapes and patterns, hand-drawn illustration and also vector?graphic work.? We are looking forward to see Kate present her latest projects on stage in October.

Bibliotheque is an independent design studio based in London, founded in 2003 by designers Tim Beard, Jonathon?Jeffrey and Mason Wells. Famous for their typographic rigour and conceptual strength, Bibliotheque has earned an?international reputation as an innovative company working in the fields of brand identity, spatial and digital design.?Their great passion for design has led them to stage exhibitions most notably in 2007, when they funded and curated?an exhibition of the designer Otl Aicher?s 1972 Olympic Identity from their archive of mid-century graphic design.

Olympic Identity is a topic that also independent Creative Director Patrick Cox knows a lot about. Formerly?Executive Creative Director of Wolf Olins, he worked on the controversial logo and brand design of the London 2012?Olympic Games. Today he works with organisations and individuals facing complex design and innovation?challenges. He says: ?Clients? needs have changed, and the branding and communications industry has struggled to?adapt? to create meaningful shifts companies have to make new things and create new brand-de!ning experiences.?

Founded by Kirsty Carter and Emma Thomas, the design agency A Practice for Everyday Life is increasingly?as one of London?s leading exponents of cultural branding. Working on everything from brand identity,?print to signage, way!nding and exhibition design, they have recently completed the exhibition design and?publication of ?Bauhaus: Art as Life? at Barbican Art Gallery, and a new visual identity for Witte de With Center for?Contemporary Art in Rotterdam.

?What I like about the idea of having ?social? as our theme is that there are so many ways of being social ? both as a?designer and as a human being? says Adrian Shaughnessy. ?It is thinking about the social implications of our work as?designers. It is sharing professional experiences at an event like TYPO London. I also hope people will use the two?days to look at what they are doing as practitioners or as students. It is no longer possible to be a designer without?considering the social implications of what we do ? environmentally, ethically and culturally. I hope the speakers and the audience explore these ideas and themes, but also that everyone has a chance to meet people they?ve never met?before and forge lasting relationships.?

US and Russian space agencies to launch first year-long mission on the ISS

US and Russian space agencies to launch first year-long mission on the ISS

If you thought that year out around Europe was an eye opener, how about 12 months on the International Space Station? That's what's in store for two unnamed astronauts. Currently, the maximum stay on the ISS is six months, but in 2015, one Russian, and one American will work their way through the whole calendar, in a trip that could help pave the way for deep space travel. Plenty of data has already been collected about the effect microgravity has on the body, but less is known of the longer-term implications. NASA is already considering sending manned expeditions to near-Earth asteroids and Mars in the coming decades -- but the results from this excursion could prove invaluable. The names of the chosen two haven't been revealed, and the Soyuz capsule's (currently unaccounted for) third-seat has also sparked talk of another person possibly coming along for the ride. Time to re-plan that gap year?

Discount Medical Scrubs And Other Medical Products Online

While the healthcare profession will always remain a profitable one--people will always require medical attention--that does not imply that individual companies, hospitals, and offices will always have the money to purchase expensive equipment and supplies. Just think about all of the supplies you see at a general doctor's office: thermometers, latex gloves, syringes, gowns, etc. The list could go on forever. And these supplies need to be constantly replenished in order to properly take care of patients. Doctors should never skimp when it comes to quality, but in a digital age, online shopping has made it possible to purchase supplies in an easy, timely, and cost-effective fashion.

There are numerous benefits to purchasing supplies online and because that is the direction the world is headed, medical professionals can rest easy knowing they are receiving the quality products they expect. Everyday supplies such as latex gloves, cotton swabs, and hand soap can be purchased in bulk online through a discount supplier. And items such as these that are used so frequently are better purchased in bulk as well. Online retailers can provide greater discounts on large quantities with no loss in profit to them. Stores only available online are able to give better discounts thanks to low overhead costs. With only a website and a handful of employees to maintain, customers can expect far better prices than if shopping at a storefront. Also, customers may receive special membership discounts if they order regularly.

Another useful item to purchase online is medical scrubs, whether they are Cherokee scrubs or Dickies scrubs. Scrubs are an integral part of the healthcare world, providing a comfortable and clean uniform for employees. Medical scrubs are no longer the stark white or sea green uniform they once were years ago. Now there are hundreds, if not thousands of different options to tailor the uniform towards your office or hospital. But whether you are ordering for a major hospital in a city or a small doctor's office in the suburbs, scrubs will take quite a daily beating, meaning ordering a large supply is highly necessary. Online retailers provide a variety of choices, all at much lower costs than ordering directly through the manufacturer. And again, ordering in bulk tends to save consumers much more in the long run.

With the money saved on such standard products, medical administrators can use it towards upgrading medical equipment, updating the office, and investing in whatever items are needed to provide the best medical care possible. Shop online and enjoy great quality and savings on discounted medical scrubs and other necessary products.

A1Scrubs.com is an online retailer providing discount medical scrubs. A1 Scrubs is proud to offer some of the top brands in the industry, including Cherokee scrubs and Baby Phat scrubs. Customers can take advantage of low prices, frequent sales, and coupons for members. Learn more at our blog.
