Celtics say intensity must rise vs. Heat in Game 2

MIAMI (AP) ? The Boston Celtics have bigger issues than being upset about a perceived slight.

Yes, LeBron James dribbled behind his back. Then between his legs, five times. Then threw a behind-the-back pass. And after grabbing an offensive rebound while getting fouled by Kevin Garnett, he smiled and shouted "Yeah" three times while holding the ball out for referee Jason Phillips to collect.

All that came on one possession in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. The Celtics called it showboating.

They're probably right. But that's not the problem.

The Heat got 19 layups and dunks in Game 1 on Monday night, with James and Dwyane Wade fueling what became a 93-79 win. And if Boston's defensive issues weren't enough cause to concern the Celtics, Ray Allen said his ailing right ankle is getting to be even more problematic ? something that's bound to be a factor again when the matchup resumes in Miami on Wednesday night.

"You can tell they believe by their anger after the game," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Tuesday, asked how his team is handling the emotions of a Game 1 loss. "There wasn't a lot of happy guys in our locker room yesterday or in film today when we start out by showing 19 straight layups. Who wants to watch that? I didn't. I watched it four or five times."

Along the same lines, the Heat said there were elements of the game film that they didn't like either.

James and Wade did their part in Game 1, combining for 54 points. The rest of the Heat added 39 points, 32 rebounds, seven assists and six blocked shots, but there were a slew of missed shots and one second-quarter defensive lull that had Miami addressing some issues on the practice court Tuesday.

"I think we all felt that we could have played better," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We weren't as sharp as we had been, particularly in the three games before that. But that's the playoffs. You have to find a way to survive and win, even if you have to do it when you're not playing your best, like last night."

There are some predictable elements that seem to pop up after the opening game of a playoff series, with the team that lost Game 1 saying it had to get more physical and the winning team saying that a 1-0 lead doesn't mean anything. And both apply in this case as well, with Boston guard Rajon Rondo among the Celtics' voices saying things had to be made tougher for Miami.

James and Wade responded to that with shrugs, insisting that's typical for any series.

"I already think that's going to happen in every game," James said. "So I don't have to prepare for it."

Talking points like that can be dismissed. The Allen situation, however, doesn't seem like it's going away.

Allen has been dealing with pain in his right ankle for several weeks, and missed all but one of his seven field-goal attempts in Boston's Game 1 loss. He even missed four free throws, just the third time in his career that he's done that. He's shooting only 39 percent in the postseason, 27 percent from 3-point range and 60 percent from the foul line ? way off his usual career numbers in all those departments.

"I don't even like talking about it," Allen said. "It's just part of what I'm dealing with."

Allen said he did not work out Tuesday, which is a rarity.

"In my predicament, I'm only going to do myself further damage," Allen said.

Rivers said the Celtics will stick with Allen, making it sound like the decision was made partly out of respect to the veteran guard ? who made it clear that he wants to play ? and made partly because Boston simply doesn't have many more options. The Celtics put Allen back in the starting lineup midway through the second round against Philadelphia because Avery Bradley went down for the season with a shoulder injury.

"Ray is Ray, and we're going to keep rolling him out there and see what we can get," Rivers said. "If we feel he can't give it to us, we'll go with someone else. But I think right now you have to give Ray a fighting chance every time."

Miami was in trouble against Indiana about a week ago, trailing 2-1 in the series and losing at halftime of Game 4 in Indianapolis. Since then, Wade and James have been brilliant, and the trend continued in Game 1 against the Celtics.

"For us, we're playing great team ball, especially in the fourth quarter," Wade said. "We're not playing as much hero ball that we played last year. We're getting off the ball. We're penetrating. We're trusting each other a lot more. It comes with time. In the fourth quarter we believe in each other, and that's been a success for us."

Said James: "Everything we're getting has been coming out of the offense. We're not forcing."

The Celtics sounded like they want to make the Heat start forcing things soon, getting Miami out of its current rhythm. Otherwise, the Heat could find themselves halfway to another East title banner by the close of business on Wednesday night.

"It's got to get more physical from our part," Celtics forward Paul Pierce said. "We've got to show better resistance. We thought it was way too easy for them in Game 1. They got very comfortable. Hopefully in Game 2, we can make it a little bit more uncomfortable for them."

Panorama of the Week: Daisho-in Buddhist Temple ? Miyajima, Japan

When you enter Heniyokutu Cave at Daisho-in Buddhist temple, pause for a moment. As your eyes adjust to the darkness, details begin to appear ? prayer offerings and written wishes tied to the base of Buddhist statues, Japanese characters tracing the bottom of the lights, faint smiles on many of the icons. In the dim light, there?s a feeling of peacefulness amidst it all.

If you visit the island of Miyajima near the city of Hiroshima, be sure to carve out several hours to spend at Daisho-in Buddhist temple. Its grounds are covered in Buddhist statues of all shapes, sizes and decor. They?re not only a photographer?s dream, but they also tell the story of the diversity of symbols in Japan?s versions of Buddhism.

Be sure to hang around long enough, as it will increase the likelihood that you?ll catch a ceremony or two along the way.

New Strategic Plan for International Business in Barbados | l ? l ...

A new strategic plan for Barbados will embody strategies which will make this country?s aspirations for its international business and financial services export capacity a reality.

This assurance was given by Minister of International Business and International Transport, George Hutson, as he addressed this morning?s International Business Stakeholders? Consultation at Hilton Barbados.

Mr. Hutson said as the 2007 to 2012 Strategic Plan came to an end this year, the challenge would now be to chart a new path and a new developmental strategy for the international business sector.

?The short and medium-term strategy which arose out of our last consultation centred on a set of initiatives to guide us to the year 2013. Over the next few months we need to review that plan, evaluating those objectives which were achieved and those which have not yet been implemented or achieved,? he said.

Mr. Hutson added that the institutional strengthening and restructuring of the Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office and the International Business Unit, were still to be completed and implemented.

The Minister added that the global architecture continued to shift, and placed additional requirements on conceptualising new policy prescriptions which outlined a clear path to the future and to meet the growing demand for new products and the improved delivery of services.

Mr. Hutson said it was expected that the consultation would provide a forum and platform for the conceptualisation of a range of recommendations that would create the policy construct to allow for the future success and development of the international business sector.

?There can be no doubt that these are changing and challenging times for small developing states such as ours which seek to create a niche in the world of international cross border trade. These challenges inspire us as well as require us to innovate in such ways that differentiate us from the rest of the world,? he pointed out.

Among the challenges confronting the sector recently were the Organisation of Economic Development Global Forum Peer Review process, of which Barbados has completed its Phase One assessment and will enter Phase Two within the first quarter of next year.

Outstanding recommendations to be addressed from the first phase will be overseen by a Cabinet-approved committee chaired by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of International Business, Gabrielle Springer. This will ensure it is done in a timely matter to allow for the Phase Two assessment to be executed efficiently.

?The Department of Inland Revenue, the Central Bank, the Office of the Registrar of Companies will be the agencies at the forefront of this phase of the review process,? Mr. Hutson said.

Maintaining Your Own RV

If you own an RV, you must ensure that it is maintained in good condition. Unlike with a rental, it is your responsibility to ensure that the vehicle is in good condition at all times. These large vehicles often require a significant amount of maintenance, and this often depends on the vehicle model.

Before going on any trip, you should make sure that the vehicle goes through a thorough check, and any issues or repairs made before leaving on the trip. Ignoring even the slightest repairs can lead to a more costly repair job. You should do everything to ensure that you do not get any breakdown on the road. The RV has many components and features and it would be difficult for anyone who is not experienced to carry out the maintenance. It is often necessary to get professionals to carry out the vehicle maintenance.

While professionals can take care of the mechanical details, you can avoid paying for the full service by taking care of all the other details yourself.

Go through the interior to make sure that everything is in good shape prior to the trip, and all the fabric is in good condition. A successful trip will be determined by how prepared you are.

A good maintenance job will help you to avoid unpleasant surprises that can ruin a pleasant trip. Even when you are not travelling, you should carry out routine maintenance on the vehicle. Have a technician look at the engine and examine all the mechanical aspects at least once a year. Make sure you change the oil regularly as recommended by the manufacturer, and keep an eye on the vehicle mileage. It is important to have any repairs carried out immediately. If you drive around often in the hot seasons, the vehicle will require checks that are more frequent.

Always ensure that you check the pressure in all the tires, as well as the spares. The manufacturers usually recommend specific pressure depending on the tire. The manual usually has instructions that should be followed in order to ensure the RV is in good condition. Check all the propane tanks before you travel and make sure they are filled or replaced.

All the RV's interiors need the gas in order to run. You do not want to be in a situation where you run out of propane in a deserted location. You should also ensure that you have enough fuel at all times. Other checks you need to carry out include ensuring the windshield wipers are in good condition, checking all the lights, replacing air condition filters, checking the batteries and other equipment.

It is important to inspect the roof of the RV every couple of months. Look for any signs of cracks in the seals or any other signs of deterioration. Fill any cracks with silicon sealant to prevent further damage. Most dealerships stock RV sealant that is very efficient for the task. Heat and sunlight contributes to deterioration of the material and many RV owners have complained of roof leaks due to the cracks that are made worse by failure to inspect the roof.

It?s time again for Kirkwood Academy of Performing Arts? wonderful musical theatre production. Always a crowd-please, this year?s show will feature graduating students, Taylor Manns and Christopher Wood in a rendition of Cinderella or The Little Glass Slipper.

Taylor Manns has been studying dance and voice since the age of five. Her disciplines include ballet, jazz and musical theatre and vocal classes with Andrea Bertrum. She?s most proud of her performance with the honours choir at Carnegie Hall in 2010. She?ll return to New York next year as she?s been accepted into the Musical Theatre program at the prestigious American Musical and Drama Academy.

The dashing prince, Christopher, has been performing dance for 10 years and also studying vocals with Bertrum. He has received many awards in the Upper Island Music Festival for both voice and dance. Christopher looks forward to graduating high school this year and taking his next steps in the world.

Cinderella?s director, Donna Wilkins, creatively unites her Musical Theatre classes to produce charming and memorable Musical Theatre productions, including: Alice in Wonderland, The Jungle Book, The Wizard of Oz, The Little Mermaid, Annie and Seussical. Quoting Wilkins, ?This is my ninth Musical Theatre production with the students from Kirkwood Academy of Performing Arts. This year, our cast of approximately 100 talented children ranges in age from one-year- old to 18 years old. This promises lots of entertainment and fun for all. Please come and support these hardworking kids!?

Cinderella is full of wonderful songs and dances that the students are eager to share.

Seniors grow old under debt

Norman Harvel is growing old under a mountain of debt.

At 60, Harvel faces medical and credit card bills topping $80,000. Yet Harvel is unable to work, having been injured at a job site more a decade ago. The former building maintenance worker now lives on $904 a month in Social Security disability benefits.

"I was so sick and tired of getting the bills, so I would throw them away," Harvel said from his tiny basement apartment in Dundalk. "I've had to try to tell myself that it's something I will wake up from."

In Maryland and across the country, baby boomers and other older Americans are drowning in debt, say credit counselors, elder law attorneys and economists. A growing number of older people in the Baltimore region are seeking financial assistance and help finding work, as well as filing for bankruptcy, say those who work with senior citizens.

"It's supposed to be the golden years, but it's not, at least financially," said Nicholas Del Pizzo III, a Dundalk attorney whose clients include many financially struggling seniors seeking bankruptcy help.

From 1992 to 2007, the percentage of households of people in their mid-50s and older with housing and consumer debt rose from 53.8 percent to 63 percent, according to the Washington-based Employee Benefit Research Institute's research using government data. The problem is even more acute for those 55 to 64, with 81.7 percent carrying debt.

Over the same period, the average overall debt for these 55-and-older households more than doubled, to $70,370, according to EBRI.

In Harvel's case, he piled up debt over years of taking care of his sick wife, Loretta, who died last year at 63. She had diabetes, was on dialysis and required two open-heart surgeries, Harvel said.

Health care bills are a leading factor contributing to the indebtedness of graying Americans.

Workers are paying more for employer-sponsored health insurance, while costs for medical care are skyrocketing. Eligibility for Medicare doesn't begin until age 65, and it does not cover such expenses as hearing aids, dental care and long-term nursing care.

Meanwhile, more older homeowners are carrying mortgage debt into retirement. Making matters worse, declining housing values have cut into what had been a safety net for older Americans and retirees: their homes.

Some older consumers also are saddled with credit card debt. Among Americans 65 and older, for instance, the average amount of credit card debt rose to $10,235 in 2008 from $8,138 three years earlier, the largest percentage increase among all age groups, according to a survey by Demos, a New York-based public policy institute.

Moreover, other older Americans are haunted by student loans years after they, or their children, left school. Adults 50 and older owe 17 percent of the nation's $870 billion in student-loan debt, according to a March report by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The financial crisis also depleted savings and retirement accounts, contributing to a "perfect storm" of precarious finances among older Americans, said Marceline White, executive director of Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition.

One illness or emergency can throw a senior into debt, White said.

"If everything goes perfectly, they could manage," she said. "If something goes wrong, something unexpected happens, they don't have the liquidity to move on."

While recent government data shows declining consumer debt as families cut back on spending and saved more money, not all older Americans can follow suit. Not only are most older Americans past their prime earning years, but many must dip into their savings to stay on top of bills ? while those still working may make less than they did in previous years.

Low-income seniors with excessive debt are having a hard time digging out in an environment in which "job growth is slow and salary increases are minimal," said Craig Copeland, a senior research associate at EBRI, who wrote the study on debt among the elderly.

David Jones, president of the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies, said debtors age 60 and older now represent the fastest-growing segment seeking help at member offices across the country.

The trend has been especially evident in the last two years, a period in which the eldest of the baby boomers began retiring, Jones said.

Shadow of the Colossus is Comming to Europe 2 Shadow of the Colossus movie in development with Sony Pictures Sony Pictures and Josh Trank, director of sleeper-hit Chronicle, have teamed up to make a live-action adaptation of the classic Shadow of the Colossus.

Writers are currently being interviewed to help create what will hopefully be a true-to-source video game movie.

Movies based on videogames have had quite a bad reputation amongst gamers but will Shadow of the Colossus break this trend and be universally liked?

For those of you who haven?t played the game or have even heard of it, the story is about a young man named Wander who sets out on a journey to slay 16 giant Colossi so that he is able revive a girl named Mono.

Josh Trank has claimed to have been a massive fan of the game when it saw a release back in 2005 and so sought out the job to direct the movie so hopefully the fate of it is in good hands!

There has been no word on casting, an expected release date or when filming may begin but Kevin Misher, producer of big hits The Interpreter and Public Enemies, has signed on to produce the movie.
