Protesters hold 'anti-Games' near stadium

While the eyes of the world were on the first full day of competition at the London Olympics, a far smaller group was marking the "anti-Games" near the stadium on Saturday.

A few hundred protesters gathered in a party atmosphere to express their opposition to everything from corporate sponsorship of the Olympics to anger about missiles positioned on the roofs of nearby apartment blocks for the Games.

At the protest in Mile End, one subway stop from the stadium in east London, many demonstrators looked a little stunned by the sudden media attention after months of being largely ignored.

"There seem to be more cameras than protesters!" said Jean Videler, 60, equipped with a rucksack and tennis shoes, her grey hair falling to her shoulders.

The protest brought together around 40 activist groups under the banner of the "CounterOlympics Network" -- groups that had hitherto struggled to be heard above the din of the London 2012 media machine.

Some protesters were from the "Occupy London" anti-capitalist movement, or from far-left parties, united by their opposition to the multi-million-dollar sponsorship of the Games by multinationals like McDonald's and Dow Chemical.

They joined forces with local residents opposed to the placing of anti-aircraft missiles near the Olympic Stadium in Stratford to prevent any possible airborne terror attack.

As well as the new media attention, the activists also found a heavy police presence keeping watch.

A dozen motorcycle officers and two police vans were stationed at the end of the road to ensure the protesters did not get any closer to the sporting action.

John McDonnell, a lawmaker from the opposition Labour party, explained why they had come to demonstrate.

"We enjoy the sport, what we don't like is this corporate takeover that's gone on," he said.

But the atmosphere was relaxed as the protesters, ranging from pensioners to parents with young children, waited in the sun. Some shared a picnic, while others handed out leaflets.

There were even a group of ethnic Circassians in traditional dress protesting against the 2014 Winter Olympics, which will be held in Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.

Albert Beale, 60, a spokesman for the protesters, said he was pleased with the turnout.

"Some people are here because they have been thrown out of their home for the the Olympics, some are here because they don't want to allow to have missiles on their roof," he said.

Isabel, a 60-year-old woman, brandished a hand-woven banner saying "Bugger the Olympics and the Jubilee", referring to Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee celebrating 60 years on the throne, which Britain celebrated in June.

"We are more representative of people living here," she said.

There was also a more serious banner, saying: "Stop the Olympic missiles. Don't play games with our lives."

Videler, who works as a volunteer for an environment centre, said she was disgusted by the corporate sponsorship of the Olympics.

"I felt I needed to be here to stand in solidarity," she said.

Switching the state of matter may provide a novel building block for ultra low power devices

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? Sixty years after the transistor began a technological revolution that transformed nearly every aspect of our daily lives, a new transistor brings innovations that may help to do so again. Developed at RIKEN, the device uses the electrostatic accumulation of electrical charge on the surface of a strongly-correlated material to trigger bulk switching of electronic state. Functional at room temperature and triggered by a potential of only 1 V, the switching mechanism provides a novel building block for ultra low power devices, non-volatile memory and optical switches based on a new device concept.

After shrinking for many decades, conventional electronics is approaching quantum scaling limits, motivating the search for alternative technologies to take its place. Among these, strongly-correlated materials, whose electrons interact with each other to produce unusual and often useful properties, have attracted growing attention. One of these properties is triggered in phase transitions: applying a small external voltage can induce a very large change in electric resistance, a mechanism akin to a switch that has many potential applications.

Now, researchers at the RIKEN Advanced Science Institute have created the world's first transistor that harnesses this unique property. Described in a paper in Nature, the device uses an electric-double layer to tune the charge density on the surface of vanadium dioxide (VO2), a well-known classical strongly-correlated material. Thanks to the strong correlation of electrons and electron-lattice coupling in VO2, this surface charge in turn drives localized electrons within the bulk to delocalize, greatly magnifying the change of electronic phase. A potential of only 1 V, they show, is enough to switch the material from an insulator to a metal and trigger an astounding thousand-fold drop in resistance.

The electronic phase, however, is not the only thing that changes in this insulator-to-metal transition: using synchrotron radiation from RIKEN's SPring-8 facility in Harima, the research group analyzed the crystal structure of the VO2, showing that it, too, undergoes a transformation, from monoclinic to tetragonal structure. Electric-field induced bulk transformation of this kind is impossible using conventional semiconductor-based electronics and suggests a wide range of potential applications.

First released over sixty years ago to little fanfare, the transistor has had a dramatic impact on our daily lives, powering the electronic devices we use every day. The new switching mechanism takes this first discovery to a new level, demonstrating that a very small electric potential is enough to control macroscopic electronic states and offering a new route to controlling the state of matter.

Neural precursor cells induce cell death in certain brain tumors

ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? Neural precursor cells (NPC) in the young brain suppress certain brain tumors such as high-grade gliomas, especially glioblastoma (GBM), which are among the most common and most aggressive tumors. Now researchers of the Max Delbr?ck Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch and Charit? -- Universit?tsmedizin Berlin have deciphered the underlying mechanism of action with which neural precursor cells protect the young brain against these tumors. They found that the NPC release substances that activate TRPV1 ion channels in the tumor cells and subsequently induce the tumor cells to undergo stress-induced cell-death.

Despite surgery, radiation or chemotherapy or even a combination of all three treatment options, there is currently no cure for glioblastoma. In an earlier study the research group led by Professor Helmut Kettenmann (MDC) showed that neural precursor cells migrate to the glioblastoma cells and attack them. The neural precursor cells release a protein belonging to the family of BMP proteins (bone morphogenetic protein) that directly attacks the tumor stem cells. The current consensus of researchers is that tumor stem cells are the actual cause for continuous tumor self-renewal.

Kristin Stock, Jitender Kumar, Professor Kettenmann (all MDC), Dr. Michael Synowitz (MDC and Charit?), Professor Rainer Glass (Munich University Hospitals, formerly MDC) and Professor Vincenzo Di Marzo (Istituto di Chimica Biomolecolare Pozzuoli, Naples, Italy) now report a new mechanism of action of NPC in astrocytomas. Like glioblastomas, astrocytomas are brain tumors that belong to the family of gliomas. Gliomas are most common in older people and are almost invariably fatal.

As the MDC researchers showed, the NPC also migrate to the astrocytomas. There they do not secrete proteins, but rather release fatty-acid substances (endovanilloids) which are harmful to the cancer cells. However, in order to exert their lethal effect, the endovanilloids need the aid of a specific ion channel, the TRPV1 channel (transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1), also called the vanilloid receptor 1. TRPV1 is already known to researchers as a transducer of painful stimuli. It has, among other things, a binding site for capsaicin, the irritant of hot chili peppers, and is responsible for the hot sensation after eating them. Clinical trials are currently underway to develop new pain treatments by blocking or desensitizing this ion channel.

MDC researchers describe an additional role of the TRPV1 ion channel

In contrast to its use in pain management, this ion channel, which is located on the surface of glioblastoma cells and is much more abundant there than on normal glial cells, must be activated to trigger cell death in gliomas. The activated ion channel mediates stress-induced cell-death in tumor cells. If however TRPV1 is downregulated or blocked, the glioma cells are not destroyed. The MDC researchers are thus the first to identify neural precursor cells as the source of fatty acids that induce tumor cell death and to describe the role of the TRPV1 ion channel in the fight against gliomas.

However, the activity of neural precursor cells in the brain and thus of the body's own protective mechanism against gliomas diminishes with increasing age. This could explain why these tumors usually develop in older adults and not in children and young people. How can the natural protection of neural precursor cells be harnessed for older brains? According to the researchers, neural precursor cell therapy is not a solution. The benefit this obviously brings in the treatment of young people can have the opposite effect in older adults and may trigger brain tumors.

One possible treatment would be to use drugs to activate the TRPV1 channels. In mice, the group showed that a synthetic substance (arvanil), which is similar to capsaicin, reduced tumor growth. However, this substance has not yet been approved as a drug because the adverse side effects for humans are too severe. It is only used in basic research on mice, which tolerate the substance well. "In principle, however," the researchers suggest, "synthetic vanilloid compounds may have clinical potential for brain tumor treatment."

The impact of the property market as well as the tighter financing standards has placed the homeowners in to a predicament. Providing crisis proceeds to shake out, it has impacted property owners specifically those that have actually used inventive mortgage loans. Long-time residents that remortgaged their properties based upon increased worth as well could identify themselves in tax trouble with property foreclosures.

The raising home foreclosure rate in the nation resulted from the collapse of the subprime loan market. These Subprime loans were sold forcefully to taken in borrowers. Today the real worth has experienced as well as capital has taken a record whipping. According to the current information it displayed that neighborhoods with property rates less than $ 250,000 are taking the much worse pounding, on the other hand, higher-prized communities stay relatively unscathed.

As financial debt canceled by creditors is thought of taxed profit, taxpayers that drop their residences might just be left with a much higher than anticipated levy liability. It is stated that there may be some legislative relief from D.C.

President George W. Plant revealed his help for a proposed amendment to supply relief from expel of indebtedness profit for taxpayers who drop their primary residences to real estate foreclosure.

The President commands our elected representatives to transform a key housing supply of the Federal Tax Code so it does not penalize households that are obliged to sell their houses for reduced than their mortgage is worth. The current levy regulation adds up revoked home loan debt on key homes as taxable profit. The President also proposes short-term relief to improve that revoked home loan personal debt on a primary residence is not counted as earnings.

Plant's propositions would definitely make it much easier for adjustable rate mortgage loan owners to refinance using the recourses of the Federal Real estate Administration, a Depression-era firm created to help inexpensive as well as modest profit Americans to afford houses.

A predicted 60,000 home owners are behind repayments since their mortgage loans have reset. They may refinance with FHA-insured loans, as they do not guarantee refinanced credits from borrowers that are currently delinquent.

As part of the home mortgage bundle, Bush asked he would sustain legislation presently pending in Our elected representatives. This can temporarily alter tax regulation to let property owners avoid paying levies on forgiven debts in mortgages reorganized by monetary organizations. He even urged the Our elected representatives to update and also greatly improve FHA so a lot more home owners could entitle home mortgage insurance. This program will only benefit those with really good credit that have actually lagged behind refinance for a Federal Housing Authority (FHA) secured mortgage.

[ http://www.taxforeclosureproperties.infoblogz.com/tax-foreclosure-properties/finding-a-real-estate- agent-that-knows-what-they-are-doing-is-vital/ houses foreclosure]

This alleviation is proposed just to provide home owners a time-out from foreclosures. The system does not sure healing to all customers and neighborhood companies that have been advising for a six-month home foreclosure freeze. This program focuses a lot more on rescue mortgages and also the release of even more funds for credit therapy agencies. The freeze will just deliver suffering home owners time to gain their bearings.

The federal government attempts every method it should to control the increase in foreclosure price. Bush's proposal is to aid delinquent borrowers experienced property foreclosures.

Disabled Americans Battle for Access to Hotel Pools - Disabilities

HealthDay News
by By Barbara Bronson Gray
HealthDay Reporter
Updated: Jul 19th 2012

new article illustration

THURSDAY, July 19 (HealthDay News) -- For many disabled American travelers, a key form of summer relief -- the hotel pool -- remains out of their reach.

People with mobility challenges or paralysis often need a mechanized pool lift or a gently sloping ramp to get into the water. Without those accommodations, they're sidelined.

That's why a government mandate to make such pools accessible to people with disabilities by early next year has become an unlikely battlefield: pitting disability-rights groups against the hotel industry.

Both sides agree on one point: Everyone should be able to get into a public pool. What they don't agree on is what is doable.

Meanwhile, Ann Cody, a former track and field athlete, said she doesn't even pack her swimsuit any more when she goes on trips. Paralyzed at age 16 by transverse myelitis, a rare disease of the spinal cord, Cody is a paraplegic. As director of policy and global outreach for BlazeSports America, in Washington D.C., she travels a lot and finds even business-oriented hotels often don't have lift-access to their pools, she said.

"Swimming in the summer was always such a big part of my life, culturally and recreationally. People with disabilities want to enjoy the pool not just for health and fitness, but socially as well," Cody said.

That's why the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is urging hotels to speed up their implementation of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) rules stipulating that all public swimming pools, wading pools and spas be accessible to people with disabilities by Jan. 31, 2013.

The rules about accessible pools, published by the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division in 2010, were updated in May 2012 in response to feedback from the hotel industry about implementation challenges they face. The requirements mandate that public swimming areas -- including hotels, motels, recreation centers, public golf clubs, water parks and fitness clubs -- be retrofitted to make them accessible to people with disabilities, and that newly constructed pools be designed to provide the disabled the same independence, ease and convenience enjoyed by fully-abled people.

Smaller pools are only required to have one means of entry, either a lift or a sloped alternative to pool steps. Large pools -- longer than 300 feet -- must have two accessible entries, with at least one being a sloped entry or pool lift.

There are exceptions for areas where there are multiple spas or places with river-like water zones and sand bottom pools.

The two sides disagree about whether some of the regulations are feasible and how quickly the changes can be implemented. One of the biggest issues under debate is the question of fixed lifts versus portable lifts.

Helena Berger, executive vice president and chief operating officer of AAPD, said her organization is arguing for permanent lifts rather than portable models because they tend to be easier to use and more readily accessible. But the fixed lifts, with a cost estimated at about $8,000 each, can require additional space by the pool and sometimes require digging up concrete and placing electrical conduits.

Berger sees this as a manageable cost. "Think of all the money being spent for flat-screen TVs in hotels," she said. "From a monetary point of view, for many of these hotels, it would not be a hardship to purchase fixed lifts and make the other accommodations."

But Marlene Colucci, executive vice president for policy for the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA), in Washington, D.C., said that while the hotel industry is committed to implementing the recommendations, many hotels, small and large, are facing problems: "Our industry really wants to accommodate guests and it's in our best interest to do that, but we want to provide access safely for everyone."

There is so much variability in the size of pool areas, especially in smaller and older hotels, she said, that the hotel industry needs some flexibility within the federal rules.

"We're asking the federal government to take a balanced approach," she said. "You should be able to share a lift between two bodies of water in the same area, for example."

And with 320,000 pools affected by the new rules, Colucci said the AHLA is concerned that the demand for lifts is exceeding current supply.

The industry is also worried about increased liability associated with making pool lifts permanently available when lifeguards aren't present. Hydraulic lifts can move quickly, potentially causing injury, Colucci said.

Personal Finance - Helping yourself: Control your Finances with Top ...

At present there are numerous people who are unable to control their expenses and feel that they can never recover from their financial mayhem. But nothing is impossible; if you feel that attaining financial stability is out of your reach, here are some steps that can be taken now to put you in a better financial position in the future.

Tip 1: Spend within your Means

The initial step you need to take is to know how much you spend monthly and how much you are earning; spend only within your earnings never exceed it. The best way to implement is to stay away from your credit cards; when you are in financial difficulties, credit cards dig a deeper financial hole for you. If there are some emergencies arising and you are in need of instant cash you can opt for a payday loan, it will provide you with the cash instantly and you can pay it back with your next paycheck.

Tip 2: Organise your Finances

If you neglect paying your bills on time and ignore your credit card payments thinking that you can do that later on, it would ultimately lead you in late payment fees and penalties. This could also lead you in tarnished credit reports and a lower credit score. To avoid such situations the first thing you need to do is to be financially organised. Prepare a cash-flow calendar for everyone in the home who earns money. Then write down which bills are to be paid on what dates and by whom. This will help to get in a good financial position and become more financially stable.

Tip 3: Track your Expenses

It is very important for you to know where your earnings are being spent. Keep a proper track of all your spending?s for a month this will give you a detailed plan who is spending how much and where. Then according to your spending?s in the house you can prepare a monthly budget plan covering all the necessities and save up some money for the future requirements.

Tip 4: Improve your Credit

If your credit reports are becoming weak because of your recent spending, then work on improving it. Start to prepare a plan for repayments of your debts; initially begin to pay with a smaller amount and then increase it gradually. Your recent payments will create a stronger impact on your credit score and ultimately improve it.

By following each of the above mentioned tips you pave your way to a stronger financial ground.

Dutch authorities -- military police and a team of special detectives and prosecutors -- are working working closely with their American counterparts to investigate the incidents, Robert Van Kapel, Marechaussee Police Department spokesman, told NBC News.

He added that it appeared the needles were deliberately placed in the sandwiches, but had no further information on the matter.

Delta says what appear to be sewing needles were found in five sandwiches Sunday. One passenger on a flight to Minneapolis was injured.

The other needles were on two flights to Atlanta and one to Seattle.

The needles were found in sandwiches made by the airline's Amsterdam caterer, Gate Gourmet, Delta spokeswoman Chris Kelly said Monday.

"Delta is taking this matter extremely seriously and is cooperating with local and federal authorities who are investigating the incident," the airline said in a statement.

"Delta has taken immediate action with our in-flight caterer at Amsterdam to ensure the safety and quality of the food we provide onboard our aircraft," the statement said.

FBI Special Agent Stephen Emmett in Atlanta confirmed Tuesday that the agency is investigating but declined to comment further.

The Transportation Security Administration says it's closely monitoring the situation. The agency said it immediately notified U.S. carriers with flights from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

Report: Banking giant allowed money laundering

Luke Macgregor / Reuters, file

A HSBC bank logo is highlighted by the sun in London in this file photo taken March 1, 2010.

By NBCNews.com's Alastair Jamieson and news services

A "pervasively polluted" culture at HSBC allowed the bank to act as financier to clients moving shadowy funds from the world's most dangerous and secretive corners, including Mexico, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Syria, according to a scathing U.S. Senate report issued on Monday.

The report [link to PDF here] which comes ahead of a Senate hearing on Tuesday, said large amounts of Mexican drug money was likely to have passed through the bank.?

HSBC's U.S. division provided money and banking services to some banks in Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh believed to have helped fund al-Qaida and other terrorist groups, according to an Al-Jazeera story on the report.

While the big British bank's problems have been known for nearly a decade, the Senate probe detailed just how sweeping the problems have been, both at the bank and at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, a top U.S. bank regulator which the report said failed to properly monitor HSBC.

"The culture at HSBC was pervasively polluted for a long time," said Senator Carl Levin, chairman of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, a Congressional watchdog panel.

The report comes at a troubling time for a banking industry reeling from a multi-country probe into the manipulation of global benchmark rates. Last month, rival British bank Barclays agreed to pay a $453 million fine to settle a U.S.-British probe into the rigging of the benchmark interest rate known as the London interbank offered rate, or Libor.

Lax controls
The report caps a year-long inquiry that included a review of 1.4 million documents and interviews with 75 HSBC officials and bank regulators. It will be the focus of a hearing on Tuesday at which HSBC and OCC officials are scheduled to testify.

Banks pulling out of rate-setting panels in wake of Libor scandal

In a statement emailed to NBCNews.com, the bank said:?

We will apologize, acknowledge these mistakes, answer for our actions and give our absolute commitment to fixing what went wrong.?We believe that this case history will provide important lessons for the whole industry in seeking to prevent illicit actors entering the global financial system.

The report also contained strong criticism of the OCC, saying the regulator failed to crack down on the bank despite multiple red flags, allowing money laundering issues "to accumulate into a massive problem".

The failings and lax controls inside HSBC included an inability to properly monitor $15 billion in bulk cash transactions between mid-2006 and mid-2009, inadequate staffing and high turnover in the bank's compliance units, the report said.

HSBC ignored risks in doing business in countries such as Mexico, a country rife with drug trafficking, it said.

Between 2007 and 2008, HSBC's Mexican operations moved $7 billion into the bank's U.S. operations. According to the report, both Mexican and U.S. authorities warned HSBC that the amount of money could only have reached such a level if it was tied to illegal narcotics proceeds.

The focus of the Senate probe was HSBC's U.S. operations, which has its main office in New York. HSBC used the U.S. unit as a selling point to clients outside the United States, touting its ability to handle U.S. dollar transactions.

Red flags
The report described that among HSBC's problems was the bank's compliance division being unable to battle the suspect money. High turnover of top compliance officials made it difficult for reform to take hold, the report said. Employees were "overwhelmed" by a mounting number of suspect transactions that needed review.

HSBC, according to the report, helped move money for a Mexican foreign-exchange dealer called Casa de Cambio Puebla that served as a hub for laundered proceeds, according to the report.

Banks' bad behavior may be scaring away investors

Between 2005 and 2007, there was a "growing flood" of U.S. dollars moving between the exchange house and HSBC, setting off red flags inside HSBC. Some bankers said the transfers were legal. One said the money came from Mexican landscapers working in the United States and routing money back home to their families.

HSBC ultimately closed the account in November 2007 after it received a seizure warrant from the Mexican attorney general seeking money tied to the exchange dealer, the Senate report said.

Some of the money that moved through HSBC was tied to Iran, the report said, which would violate U.S. prohibitions on transactions linked to it and other sanctioned countries.

Between 2001 and 2007, more than 28,000 transactions were identified by an outside auditor for HSBC that potentially could have run afoul of laws that prohibit transactions with sanctioned countries. Of those, 25,000 involved Iran. A smaller number required additional analysis to determine if violations of U.S. regulations had occurred, the report said.

In 2010, Wachovia agreed to pay $160 million as part of a Justice Department probe that examined Mexican transactions, according to a BBC report, which also?said ING last month agreed to pay $619 million to settle U.S. government allegations that it violated U.S. sanctions against Cuba and Iran.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Smile! Facebook Android app update lets you snap using the front camera

The much-maligned Facebook app for Android has been updated. Which is good, because it was in serious need of improvement.

Chief among its new skills is the ability to use the front-facing camera, so you can take a new profile picture without any guesswork involved. Say cheese.

So what else is new? The new messaging feature lets you switch between conversations, bring in friends of friends, share bigger photos, as well as see who?s available. Some of the bugs have been fixed too, which is good news, as I frequently get not one but two spinning balls telling me something is happening, though not what. Frankly, it?s a bit of a shambles considering it?s had nearly 4 million downloads.

I?m guessing Facebook will find a way to vastly improve the app as soon as it slaps adverts all over it.

The update makes the app more secure, and it?s faster to log in and find your way around, too.

But being able to use the front-facing camera is the real boon. Your good self will show up on-screen when you point the camera for a self-portrait, so you?ll be able to see the result before you snap. Which should cut out a lot of trial and error.

You?ll need Android 2.2 (Froyo) or above to update to the latest version.

Have you updated yet? If so, let us know how you get on.

Today was the day we all returned to the medical clinic to have our children?s tuberculosis injections checked after the required 48-hour waiting period. Of course, Madeleine Bao Yi had no idea what was in store as she sat happily at breakfast, enjoying olive loaf, a hardboiled egg, and some dumplings.

It?s interesting to watch the dynamics of the adoptive families as they start out their day in the breakfast room. The waitresses, dressed in vests and long skirts slit way up the side, are quite attentive. They clear the used dishes away promptly as well as offer immediate linguistic intervention when a Chinese child goes ballistic, much to the consternation of his or her American parents. Once the child feels heard, things usually settle down. If not, administer Goldfish, ASAP.

We arrived at the clinic shortly after 1 p.m. to find the place very crowded with Chinese families. Simon brought us to the special section for adoptive families and we were waited on right away. The requirement for passing the tuberculosis test was that the welt on the forearm could not be longer than 10 millimeters. The other three families were in and out in a flash. As we approached the door, Bao Yi looked very hesitant but we coaxed her in. The nurse on duty poked the welt, looked at it this way and that way, drew a faint line on the skin with a pen, got out a measuring stick and conferred with her assistant. This process was then repeated. Finally, the nurse admitted that the welt was 9+ millimeters and let us walk.

Things picked up considerably as we headed to Shamian Island, an island carved out in the Pearl River that was once the location of the British, French, and other legations, which facilitated and forced trade between China and the West. The feel of the island is that of a calm, garden-like oasis with gracious European architecture and brick streets amid the hustle and bustle of greater Guangzhou. Pale yellow and peach stucco buildings, black wrought iron fences, colorful flowers, and immaculate shrubbery.

Shamian?Island?holds a special place in the hearts of many adoptive families because the White Swan Hotel is located there. This beloved high-rise cocoon for newly blended families has been under massive reconstruction for more than two years now. When we stayed there in 2003, each family received, gratis, a special edition ?adoption Barbie,? featuring the standard leggy California blonde with a tiny Chinese baby in her arms.

For old time?s sake, we walked over there so Grace could see where it all began. The hotel was closed but we could see inside the lobby, or what was left of it. The Swan was officially gutted; piles of broken cement and tiles were roped off and heaped up in the once-elegant entrance. Right down the street, The Deli Shop was also closed, though we retold, once again, the story of how Laurent went out that first night as a daddy and brought back red bean and tuna sandwiches for his little family.???? ???

In our wanderings, we came across several photo shoots with brides and grooms done up in full trendy wedding attire. We assumed that this was a spread for a magazine, but Simon later assured us that no, these were the wedding couples themselves getting the all-important photos taken months before the actual marriage took place. The quiet side streets lend themselves as classy backdrops for a wedding album. Numerous photography studios are located on the island and they rent the clothes used in the photo shoots, even though they may not be the same style clothes the couple will wear on their special day.

The big finish for the afternoon was a return to the hotel swimming pool. When we finally told Bao Yi it was time for swimming, she began to chortle and hop around the room in a true happy dance. We all went down to the pool and enjoyed some cooling off.

Tomorrow?s plan includes a visit to a cultural museum and a group lunch at a Thai restaurant called ?Cow and Bridge.? We look forward to it all as our time here is growing short.

After the girls go to sleep, I must go into the bathroom and sneakily wash out the one outfit that Bao Yi insists on wearing, day in and day out. It could certainly stand to be cleaned, but more importantly, Grace has requested it. ?Mama, please wash that outfit tonight. I just can?t bear the thought of Bao Yi going out on the street in it again.?

It?s all about East-West diplomacy, my friends.

Tips To Get To Your True, Healthy Weight | The Secret & the Law of ...

It?s difficult to attempt weight loss if you?re unsure of how to do it. It is really hard to shed weight if you think you have tried all that you could do but nothing seems to be working. This article will give you the information you need to get started.

Once you realize that you control the reason for your weight problems, you can begin to work on forgiving yourself for your past lack of control. Once you have done this, you may finally begin to move forward. Don?t blame your past self; instead, pity the person who was unable to take control of their life and use that as motivation to stay the course.

Eating plenty of foods that are healthy for you can help you lose weight. Even though you are trying to lose weight, you need to make sure your diet contains adequate nutrition. The weight may come off, but your ultimate goal is better health.

Use salad plates instead of dinner plates. It?s normal to want to fill a bowl or plate with food, but keep in mind that dishes have increased alongside portion sizes, which makes it more difficult to estimate appropriate serving sizes. If you use a salad plate for your main course, this can help reduce the food that you consume.

You should try walking up short flights of stairs if you want to lose weight. While it might seem inconsequential, ditching the elevator and using the stairs, even if only for a couple of floors, will help you to lose weight.

When you start feeling hungry, drink a glass of water and wait fifteen minutes before eating. Sometimes a hunger cue can be caused by the need to hydrate your body, or even from boredom. Try to walk for a bit and hydrate yourself. If you are hungry after this, then you can eat food.

Losing weight slowly is the best way to maintain your weight loss. Crash diets may temporarily help you to lose water weight, but you are almost guaranteed to gain it all back and then some. Although marketers know people want a quick fix, this isn?t necessarily in your best interests.

Avoid losing weight to try and meet some short term goal, such as getting into a bridesmaid?s dress. Instead, commit to making a change for life. If you can make adjustments to your everyday habits, you will see that you have a good chance at succeeding while trying to lose lots of weight.

An excellent piece of advice to help you shed weight is to keep yourself busy, as you won?t have time to constantly think about food. If you?re sitting around doing nothing, there?s a good chance you?ll start getting the urge to eat. Keeping busy prevents these problems from occurring.

If you are working full-time, you should bring snacks to work to munch on. This goes double if you plan to work overtime. You don?t want to come home and binge because you haven?t eaten enough during the day. That will lead you to junk food, and that will be a setback for your weight loss plans.

If you are someone who likes to snack on foods like potato chips, opt for chips that are baked instead of fried. They offer a lot less fat and calories and taste great.

When attempting to lose weight, you should never give up. Experiencing setbacks is normal. Do not let this stop you. If you have to, you could always alter your plan.

Avoid foods that trigger your appetite. The best way to do this is to maintain control over your environment. You should avoid any contact with trigger foods in your home, your car or at work. If you can get them, you will eat them.

Just stick to the information that you have just read and soon enough you will attain the weight loss goals you are seeking. Remember to take things day by day and do not be afraid to make mistakes. If you make a mistake, get back on the horse and move on. Tomorrow is a brand new day and that means everyone deserves second chances.

TED Blog | 10 online games ? with a social purpose

09 July 2012

Jane McGonigal at 2012 TEDGlobal

Game designer Jane McGonigal firmly believes that video games are not just about mashing buttons and getting to the next level. In fact, during her talk at TEDGlobal 2012, McGonigal gave several surprising statistics: that online gaming can be more effective than pharmaceuticals in treating clinical depression and that just 30 minutes a day is correlated with significant increases in happiness.

McGonigal says online games can even help people heal from injuries and achieve greater wellness in the face of disease. She used an interesting test subject to illustrate this point: herself.

In her talk, McGonigal shared that, following a severe concussion, she found herself bed ridden for three months with a voice in her head telling her that the pain would never end. As she explains, ?I thought, ?I am either going to kill myself, or I?m going to turn this into a game.??

McGonigal chose the latter route, developing the online game SuperBetter, a series of challenges designed to boost physical, mental, emotional and social?resilience. ?Within three days of playing the game, that fog of depression and anxiety vanished,? said McGonigal. When she decided to make the game public, she began getting thank yous from across the globe, including from people with cancer and chronic pain.

In her classic TEDTalk ?Gaming can make a better world? McGonigal pointed out that online games like World of Warcraft inspire people to think like heroes. But are there other games out there like SuperBetter, which are created for a specific social good? Here, many more examples.

?

World Without Oil
Also a McGonigal creation, players in this game are dropped into a world where oil resources have been tapped and where they must get creative to survive the massive global shortage. The best part of the game? It teaches easy ways to use less oil in the real world?habits that players report keeping up when they aren?t playing.

FoldIt
An online protein folding game, FoldIt allows its quarter million players to help with scientific research by stabilizing strings of amino acids. Think of it like biological Tetris ? FoldIt makes a competition out of biological pattern recognition, leading to innovative solutions to problems that have frustrated scientific communities for years.

WAY
Communicating across languages and cultures isn?t easy. But in this online game, two anonymous players ? culled from different locations around the globe ? must learn how to speak to each other as they navigate obstacles. Developed by CoCo & Co, this game took top honors at this year?s Games for Change Awards.

Budget Hero
Think you could balance the national budget? Then you?ll want to play this game from American Public Media, which lets players see what happens to the national deficit when they increase funding to programs or opt to make difficult cuts. ?Every member of Congress should be required to play this game,? said one of its creators.

Pain Squad
Children and teenagers with cancer are often asked to keep pain diaries ? paperwork that is not only boring but focuses their attention on their discomfort. The iOS app Pain Squad makes the whole process fun and interactive ? while also helping doctors provide better treatments for young patients.

Spent
When your bank account is in the black, it?s easy to think that anyone could pull themselves out of poverty by their boot straps. But in this online game, players are charged with looking for work while surviving on $1000 a month ? highlighting that poverty and unemployment are systematic and not just the result of character flaws.

Evoke
Created by the World Bank Institute in conjunction with McGonigal, this game is a 10-week crash course in social innovation, giving players challenges from ?food security? to ?urban resilience,? and encouraging them to become a think tank on local challenges.

Unmanned
Most video shoot-em-up video games make war seem action-packed and glamorous. Unmanned aims to paint a far more realistic portrait, casting players as a soldier dealing with boredom and traumatic dreams, in addition to military duties.

Plot.Form
This slick game seeks to make charitable giving fun and interactive, rather than passive and forgettable. Currently fundraising to build homes for teenagers on the street in Moshi, Tanzania, Plot.form allows users to donate?and pick out building materials, colors and more for parts of the homes.

Dempster extends scoreless streak

By HOWIE RUMBERG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:45 p.m. ET July 8, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Ryan Dempster is too busy watching "Swamp People" to see the stories about him being possible trade bait. He's pitching too well, though, to know that he might be in another uniform by the end of the month.

Dempster extended his scoreless innings streak to 27 in his first start in three weeks, Starlin Castro hit a three-run homer and the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 7-0 Sunday.

"I don't really notice a lot of the rumors," Dempster said. "I just handle what I can handle and that's going out there and pitching and doing my job. Wherever the cards fall they fall."

Dempster (4-3) was activated from the disabled list then pitched five innings of four-hit ball in his first outing since June 15, when he experienced tightness in a back muscle. His lengthy string of zeros is the Cubs' best for a starter since Ken Holtzman went 27 innings in 1971.

The Cubs made it as comfortable as possible for Dempster, scoring four runs before he even threw a pitch.

Alfonso Soriano had an RBI single, Jeff Baker a run-scoring double with a jam shot to the opposite field and Geovany Soto drove in two runs with a single against Jonathon Niese.

Niese (7-4) had only given up four or more runs in a game five times - 16 starts - this season entering Sunday.

"They came out swinging," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "He was trying to get ahead (and) they were hammering the first pitch."

The Cubs finished the first half in the midst of a modest surge, winning nine of 13 to improve to a disappointing 33-52 in Theo Epstein's first year in charge. It's their worst record before the break since 2006 when they were 34-54.

The team has been a little up and down but everybody hustles right now," Castro said. "Let's see in the second half everybody pull a little bit together and win more games."

The Mets had a chance to move a season high-tying eight games above .500 but continued a recent trend of trading wins and losses. They go into the All-Star break 46-40, their best first half since 2010 when they were 48-40. New York finished a homestand against last place teams, Philadelphia and Chicago, 3-3.

Not that the Mets didn't have had their chances Sunday. They put runners in scoring position in each of first three innings and also in the sixth but came up empty.

Dempster put his streak in jeopardy by allowing a one-out triple to Scott Hairston in the second but he got Jordany Valdespin to line out to second and Josh Thole to groundout to shortstop. Niese and Ruben Tejada opened the third with singles but the Nos. 2-3-4 hitters couldn't capitalize.

After Tejada's hit, Dempster retired nine in a row before being lifted.

"He was way more efficient than we thought," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. " Everything went well. He feels great."

The right-hander was scheduled to start the Cubs' first game after the All-Star break on Friday but Sveum said Dempster will start Saturday instead to better fit his throwing program. Paul Maholm will move up from Saturday.

Dempster has won four in a row after an 18-start winless streak dating back to Aug. 11. He struck out four and walked none.

Maholm came on in relief for the first time. He made 201 consecutive starts until he entered in the sixth and gave up two hits. But the Mets failed again with runners on. Ike Davis popped to shortstop and Lucas Duda grounded into a double play.

Manuel Corpas, James Russell and Shawn Camp finished the eight-hitter.

Niese had settled in after the first, allowing only one hit until Luis Valbuena singled with one out in the seventh. Reed Johnson singled with two outs and Castro hit the first pitch for a three-run homer, his seventh long ball this year.

"A little tough the last couple of weeks, but today something good happened," Castro said.

Niese allowed seven runs and nine hits in seven innings.

NOTES: To make room for Dempster on the Cubs roster, Chris Volstad was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Volstad is 0-7 this season. ... Mets prospects RHP Zach Wheeler and 3B Wilmer Flores were scheduled to play in the MLB Futures Game in Kansas City Sunday. ... Valdespin started in center field for first time in his career. ... Game took a crisp 2 hours, 8 minutes. ... Collins said Johan Santana will not start Friday. He'll go Sunday or Monday instead. "We're going to let Johan's ankle have an extra day or so," Collins said. "He's fine. Don't misread anything." Santana twisted his ankle in Friday's start, when he gave up a career high-tying 13 hits.

Oscar-winning star Ernest Borgnine dies at 95

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Ernest Borgnine, the beefy screen star known for blustery, often villainous roles, but who won the best-actor Oscar for playing against type as a lovesick butcher in "Marty" in 1955, died Sunday. He was 95.

His longtime spokesman, Harry Flynn, told The Associated Press that Borgnine died of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife and children at his side.

Borgnine, who endeared himself to a generation of Baby Boomers with the 1960s TV comedy "McHale's Navy," first attracted notice in the early 1950s in villain roles, notably as the vicious Fatso Judson, who beat Frank Sinatra to death in "From Here to Eternity."

Then came "Marty," a low-budget film based on a Paddy Chayefsky television play that starred Rod Steiger. Borgnine played a 34-year-old who fears he is so unattractive he will never find romance. Then, at a dance, he meets a girl with the same fear.

"Sooner or later, there comes a point in a man's life when he's gotta face some facts," Marty movingly tells his mother at one point in the film. "And one fact I gotta face is that, whatever it is that women like, I ain't got it. I chased after enough girls in my life. I-I went to enough dances. I got hurt enough. I don't wanna get hurt no more."

The realism of Chayefsky's prose and Delbert Mann's sensitive direction astonished audiences accustomed to happy Hollywood formulas. Borgnine won the Oscar and awards from the Cannes Film Festival, New York Critics and National Board of Review.

Mann and Chayefsky also won Oscars, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hailed the $360,000 "Marty" as best picture over big-budget contenders "The Rose Tattoo," ''Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing," ''Picnic" and "Mister Roberts."

"The Oscar made me a star, and I'm grateful," Borgnine told an interviewer in 1966. "But I feel had I not won the Oscar I wouldn't have gotten into the messes I did in my personal life."

Those messes included four failed marriages, including one in 1964 to singer Ethel Merman that lasted less than six weeks.

But Borgnine's fifth marriage, in 1973 to Norwegian-born Tova Traesnaes, endured and brought with it an interesting business partnership. She manufactured and sold her own beauty products under the name of Tova and used her husband's rejuvenated face in her ads.

During a 2007 interview with The Associated Press, Borgnine expressed delight that their union had reached 34 years. "That's longer than the total of my four other marriages," he commented, laughing heartily.

Although still not a marquee star until after "Marty," the roles of heavies started coming regularly after "From Here to Eternity." Among the films: "Bad Day at Black Rock," ''Johnny Guitar," ''Demetrius and the Gladiators," ''Vera Cruz."

Director Nick Ray advised the actor: "Get out of Hollywood in two years or you'll be typed forever." Then came the Oscar, and Borgnine's career was assured.

He played a sensitive role opposite Bette Davis in another film based on a Chayefsky TV drama, "The Catered Affair," a film that was a personal favorite. It concerned a New York taxi driver and his wife who argued over the expense of their daughter's wedding.

But producers also continued casting Borgnine in action films such as "Three Bad Men," ''The Vikings," ''Torpedo Run," ''Barabbas," ''The Dirty Dozen" and "The Wild Bunch."

Then he successfully made the transition to TV comedy.

From 1962 to 1966, Borgnine ? a Navy vet himself ? starred in "McHale's Navy" as the commander of a World War II PT boat with a crew of misfits and malcontents. Obviously patterned after Phil Silvers' popular Sgt. Bilko, McHale was a con artist forever tricking his superior, Capt. Binghamton, played by the late Joe Flynn.

The cast took the show to the big screen in 1964 with a "McHale's Navy" movie.

Borgnine's later films included "Ice Station Zebra," ''The Adventurers," ''Willard," ''The Poseidon Adventure," ''The Greatest" (as Muhammad Ali's manager), "Convoy," ''Ravagers," ''Escape from New York," ''Moving Target" and "Mistress."

More recently, Borgnine had a recurring role as the apartment house doorman-cum-chef in the NBC sitcom "The Single Guy." He had a small role in the unsuccessful 1997 movie version of "McHale's Navy." And he was the voice of Mermaid Man on "SpongeBob SquarePants" and Carface on "All Dogs Go to Heaven 2."

"I don't care whether a role is 10 minutes long or two hours," he remarked in 1973. "And I don't care whether my name is up there on top, either. Matter of fact, I'd rather have someone else get top billing; then if the picture bombs, he gets the blame, not me."

Ermes Efron Borgnino was born in Hamden, Conn., on Jan. 24, 1917, the son of Italian immigrant parents. The family lived in Milan when the boy was 2 to 7, then returned to Connecticut, where he attended school in New Haven.

Borgnine joined the Navy in 1935 and served on a destroyer during World War II. He weighed 135 pounds when he enlisted. He left the Navy 10 years later, weighing exactly 100 pounds more.

"I wouldn't trade those 10 years for anything," he said in 1956. "The Navy taught me a lot of things. It molded me as a man, and I made a lot of wonderful friends."

For a time he contemplated taking a job with an air conditioning company. But his mother persuaded him to enroll at the Randall School of Dramatic Arts in Hartford. He stayed four months, the only formal training he received.

He appeared in repertory at the Barter Theater in Virginia, toured as a hospital attendant in "Harvey" and played a villain on TV's "Captain Video."

After earning $2,300 in 1951, Borgnine almost accepted a position with an electrical company. But the job fell through, and he returned to acting, moving into a modest house in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley.

His first marriage was to Rhoda Kenins, whom he met when she was a Navy pharmacist's mate and he was a patient. They had a daughter, but the marriage ended in divorce after his "Marty" stardom.

Borgnine married Mexican actress Katy Jurado in 1959, and their marriage resulted in headlined squabbles from Hollywood to Rome before it ended in 1964.

In 1963, he and Merman startled the show business world by announcing, after a month's acquaintance, that they would marry when his divorce from Jurado became final. The Broadway singing star and the movie tough guy seemed to have nothing in common, and their marriage ended in 38 days after a fierce battle.

"If you blinked, you missed it," Merman once cracked.

Next came one-time child actress Donna Rancourt, with whom Borgnine had a daughter, and finally his happy union with Tova.

On Jan. 24, 2007, Borgnine celebrated his 90th birthday with a party for friends and family at a West Hollywood bistro. He seemed little changed from his years as a lusty villain or sympathetic hero on the screen. His only concession to age had come at 88 when he gave up driving the bus he would take around the country, stopping to talk with local folks along the way.

During an interview at the time, Borgnine complained that he wanted to continue acting but most studio executives kept asking, "Is he still alive?"

"I just want to do more work," he said. "Every time I step in front of a camera I feel young again. I really do. It keeps your mind active and it keeps you going."
