(AP) ? Investigators on Sunday examined flight recorders and other evidence to try to determine the cause of the airliner crash in Moscow that killed five people, an official said.

The Tu-204 belonging to Russian airline Red Wings was carrying eight people, all of them crew members, when it careered off the runway Saturday while landing at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport. It went partly into an adjacent highway, broke into pieces and caught fire.

Four people were pronounced dead soon after the crash and the airline said on its Twitter account that a fifth, a flight attendant, died Sunday. Those who died Saturday were the pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer and another attendant, Red Wings said.

The survivors were reported in critical or serious condition in Moscow hospitals.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia's main investigative agency, was quoted by Russian news agencies saying the data recorders were being examined, along with fuel samples. In addition, he said flight documents for the plane have been taken from the airline for examination.

Bid to Deport Piers Morgan Gains Fame

A petition asking President Obama to deport CNN anchor Piers Morgan gathered more than 33,000 signatures in just three days.

The petition on the White House's "We the People" website posted Friday has crossed the 25,000 threshold needed to solicit a response from President Obama. But unlike the petitions to reduce gun violence that Obama addressed last week, this one isn't likely to receive a favorable response.

The petition takes aim at Morgan for his impassioned defense of proposed gun control legislation on air this week. It accuses him of launching "a hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment."

But according to immigration attorney Mark Schifanelli, it would take more than expressing an opinion on television to get Morgan booted out of the country.

The Department of Homeland Security would have the power to start a deportation process on Morgan if it was warranted, Schifanelli said, but even then, there's no guarantee Morgan wouldn't win the right to stay in an appeals process.

"He's got certain rights," Schifanelli told ABC News Monday. "Even as a foreign national in the United States, he's afforded various rights under national security law and due process."

What's more, Morgan's supposed attack on the Second Amendment is likely protected by the First Amendment. His speech would have to present "immediate danger" in order to break the law. Schifanelli said it's unlikely Morgan's defense of gun restrictions would meet that requirement.

But perhaps the best reason the president wouldn't deport Morgan for advocating stricter gun laws on television is that he would be guilty of the same crime.

In a televised address on Wednesday, President Obama expressed support for Sen. Dianne Feinstein's assault weapons ban and urged Congress to take "meaningful action" to prevent further gun violence.

The petition against Morgan isn't the first wacky request to receive substantial support. A bid for Texas to secede from the union and form an independent nation has received 121,784 electronic signatures and is still waiting for a White House response.

World's oldest dinosaur discovered hanging out in London museum

World's oldest dinosaur: The fossil remains of Nyasasaurus parringtoni were first found in the 1930s near Lake Malawi in Africa. It pushes the date that dinosaurs lived back to 245 million years ago.

Researchers have found what could be the earliest known dinosaur to walk the Earth lurking in the corridors of London's Natural History Museum.

A mysterious fossil specimen that has been in the museum's collection for decades has now been identified as most likely coming from a dinosaur that lived about 245 million years ago - 10 to 15 million years earlier than any previously discovered examples.

The creature was about the size of a Labrador dog and has been named Nyasasaurus parringtoni after southern Africa's Lake Nyasa, today called Lake Malawi, and Cambridge University's Rex Parrington, who collected the specimen at a site near the lake in the 1930s.

"It was a case of looking at the material with a fresh pair of eyes," Paul Barrett from the Natural History Museum, who worked on the study, told Reuters. "This closes a gap in the fossil record and pushes back the existence of dinosaurs."

The London fossil was studied by researchers in the 1950s but no conclusion was reached and nothing was published, said Barrett. "It was a mystery what it was ... It just became this mythical animal."

Two features of the London fossil, together with a similar sample subsequently spotted at the Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town, are strong evidence that the animal belongs with the dinosaurs, the researchers said.

The bone tissues in the upper arm show marks of rapid growth, common in dinosaurs, and they also have a feature known as an elongated deltopectoral crest that anchored the upper arm muscles, a feature unique to dinosaurs.

"Although we only know Nyasasaurus from fossil fragments, the anatomy of its upper arm bone and hips have features that are unique to dinosaurs, making us confident that we're dealing with an animal very close to dinosaur origin," said Barrett.

The researchers believe Nyasasaurus probably stood upright, was a meter tall at the hip, 2-3 meters long from head to tail, and weighed 20-60 kg (44-132 lbs).

When it was alive, the world's continents were joined in a vast landmass called Pangaea, and the area of Tanzania where the fossils were found would have been part of the southern Pangaea that included Africa, South America, Antarctica and Australia.

Theorists have long argued there should have been dinosaurs walking the Earth in the Middle Triassic period, which ended about 237 million years ago, but until now the evidence has been ambiguous, said Sterling Nesbitt at the University of Washington in Seattle who led the study,?published in the journal Biology Letters.

"If the newly named Nyasasaurus parringtoni is not the earliest dinosaur, then it is the closest relative found so far," said Nesbitt.
"What's really neat about this specimen is that it has a lot of history. Found in the '30s, first described in the 1950s ... Now 80 years later, we're putting it all together."

The researchers plan further field work in Tanzania to find more fossils and build a better picture of the animal's anatomy. (Editing by Pravin Char)

Islamists, opponents clash in northern Egypt

(AP) ? Thousands of Islamists clashed with their opponents Friday in Egypt's second largest city, Alexandria, on the eve of the second leg of voting on the country's contentious constitution that has deeply polarized the nation.

The two sides hurled rocks and stones at each other in the Mediterranean port city, prompting police to fire tear gas to separate them. Volleys of tear gas containers fell into the sea as security forces cordoned off the crowds to prevent further clashes between the Muslim Brotherhood members and ultraconservative Salafis on one side, and groups of young protesters on the other.

It was not immediately clear who started the fight, which added to the already tense political crisis over the draft charter.

The Islamists had called for a massive rally Friday outside the Qaed Ibrahim main mosque in the heart of Alexandria. About 20 political parties had issued a joint statement, saying they would not hold a rival rally in the city to avoid clashes.

Security forces cordoned off streets leading to the mosque as throngs of mostly long-bearded Salafi Islamists gathered for what they called "the million-man rally to defend clerics and mosques." Islamists chanted "God is Great," and warned opponents, "with blood and soul, we redeem Islam."

The rally was called in response to last week's violence, when a well-known Alexandria preacher and ultraconservative Salafi cleric, Sheik Ahmed el-Mahalawi, was trapped inside a mosque for 12 hours while his supporters battled rock-throwing opponents outside with swords and firebombs.

El-Mahalawi, 87, stirred anger with a sermon last Friday in which he denounced opponents of the Islamist-friendly draft charter as "followers of heretics" ? something he denied in a sermon on Friday, accusing media instead of spreading "lies."

He claimed that last week's clashes were meant to prevent the voting from taking place.

"The real goal here is for the referendum not to take place," he said Friday, adding that his backers had been ready with "teams of people equipped with all facilities to end the siege on the mosque" but he held them back because Salafis "don't want to shed blood."

The referendum on the constitution is to be completed Saturday with voting in the remaining 17 of Egypt's 27 provinces. The first round was held in 10 provinces last Saturday, including in Egypt's biggest cities, Cairo and Alexandria.

Rights groups and opposition filed complaints of vote violations after last week's voting. Turnout was low, around 32 percent, and unofficial results showed the Islamists' "yes" vote getting 56 percent of the ballots.

Controversy over the new constitution has in the past month plunged Egypt into political turmoil unprecedented since the February 2011 ouster of Hosni Mubarak, the longtime authoritarian and secular-minded ruler.

The draft has split the country into two camps. On one side are the Islamists from the country's most organized group, The Muslim Brotherhood, from which President Mohammed Morsi hails, and their backers from various ultraconservative Salafi and former Jihadist groups.

The other camp is the opposition, led by the National Salvation Front. It's an alliance of liberal parties and youth groups that is backed by Christians and moderate Muslims who fear Brotherhood's attempts to monopolize power by passing a constitution that enshrines a greater role for clerics and Islamic Shariah law.

Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians from the two camps have taken to the streets and city centers over the past month to rally for their side. The crisis peaked when the two camps clashed as Brotherhood supporters attacked an opposition sit-in outside the presidential palace in Cairo on Dec. 5. The violence left at least 10 dead and hundreds of injured on both sides.

The crisis was compounded by Morsi's decision to rush the draft constitution to a referendum after an Islamist-dominated panel approved it, as well as his move last month to grant himself near-absolute powers, which were later rescinded.

The moves have also split state institutions. The judiciary became another battleground, with the powerful Judges' Club calling on its members to boycott the vote while Brotherhood sympathizers in the legal system and other independents insisted on supervising the vote.

Egyptian prosecutors held a sit-in protest to press Morsi-appointed prosecutor general Talaat Abdullah to resign on Monday. Abdullah resigned, then retracted his resignation on Thursday, raising the prospect of new protests by fellow prosecutors.

Also, Zaghloul el-Balshi, the secretary general of the election committee who is also a judge and an aid to the country's justice minister, resigned Wednesday, citing health reasons. The media said his resignation was prompted by his inability to prevent vote violations in the first leg of the referendum.

Christmas shopping: Did retail season already go over the 'fiscal cliff'?

Holiday retail sales were hampered initially this year by the the aftermath of hurricane Sandy and more recently by shoppers' fiscal cliff fears. The run-up to Christmas will make or break the season.

The final stretch to Christmas Day will make or break retailers? holiday shopping season following a sluggish start that was hampered initially by turbulent weather conditions and more recently by the continued debate over the so-called ?fiscal cliff.?

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath was one reason the shopping season ? the 50 days before Christmas ? was off to a such slow start. Retail sales in November inched up just 0.3 percent compared with October, according to the US Commerce Department.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and typically one of the biggest shopping days of the year, appeared at first glance to indicate a significant downturn for retailers. According to MasterCard SpendingPulse, which tracks retail sales via all forms of payment, including cash and check, Black Friday sales this year totaled about $18.9 billion, a 4.9 percent drop from the previous year.

However, because most retailers opened their doors earlier than normal on Thanksgiving Day, an extra $6.2 billion was spent, hiking the combined spending for the two days by 2.1 percent over the same days in 2011.

In all of November, the Commerce Department reports, department stores took the biggest hit, with sales falling 0.8 percent from October. At Macy?s, November sales fell 0.7 percent compared with the same month the previous year.

Retail spending overall eased in early December, which Michael McNamara, vice president of research and analysis at MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, attributes primarily to headlines about the looming fiscal cliff of tax increases and spending cuts that are causing consumers to think twice about committing to big ticket spending.

?This is different from the debt ceiling debate that occurred in the summer of 2011. The stories coming out now about the cliff are much more about personal finance: whether or not the payroll tax is going to be there or not, what will the tax rates be, what services might be cut. All those question marks create a degree of hesitation about personal expectations which impacts spending,? Mr. McNamara says.

Indeed, the economy is at the forefront of consumers? minds this season, according to a survey released last week by the National Retail Federation, the Washington trade group that represents 3.6 million US retailers. Almost half of holiday shoppers (47.8 percent) said the state of the economy will affect how much they purchase; 46.9 percent of those surveyed said they will pursue sales more than before, and 36.7 percent said they would comparative shop online.

The survey polled 8,333 shoppers from Dec. 4 to Dec. 10 and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 1 percent.

For retailers this year, the final 10 days before Christmas are crucial, according to SpendingPulse: Last year, the time period accounted for 24 percent, or $147 billion, of total holiday season sales. McNamara says sales in all retail sectors are relatively even at this point into the season, although there is a slight increase for furniture and furnishings, primarily due to the ?general stability and mild recovery in the housing market.?

Also potentially helping sales during this final stretch is the calendar: Last year, the final Saturday landed on Christmas Eve, which hurt sales. The extra full shopping day this season is expected to give retailers a boost that equals or surpasses the weekend following Thanksgiving.

Overall, the National Retail Federation forecasts that holiday sales will grow 4.1 percent to $586 billion compared with last year. The organization includes the full month of November in its estimation.?

U.S. drops China's Taobao website from "notorious" list

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday dropped a website owned by China's largest e-commerce company, Alibaba Group, from its annual list of the world's most "notorious markets" for sales of pirated and counterfeit goods.

Taobao Marketplace, an online shopping site similar to eBay and Amazon that brings together buyers and sellers, "has been removed from the 2012 List because it has undertaken notable efforts over the past year to work with rightholders directly or through their industry associations to clean up its site," the U.S. Trade Representative's office said in the report.

The move came just before an annual high-level U.S.-China trade meeting next week in Washington.

Taobao Marketplace is China's largest consumer-oriented e-commerce platform, with estimated market share of more than 70 percent. The website has nearly 500 million registered users, with more than 800 million product listings at any given time. Most of the users are in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has called Taobao "one of the single largest online sources of counterfeits."

The Chinese Commerce Ministry strongly objected to Taobao's inclusion on the USTR's 2011 notorious markets list. A ministry spokesman said it did not appear to be based on any "conclusive evidence or detailed analysis.

Alibaba hired former USTR General Counsel James Mendenhall to help persuade USTR to remove Taobao from its list.

The Chinese company's bid to shed its "notorious" label won support from the Motion Picture Association of America, a former critic of Taobao, which praised its effort to reduce the availability of counterfeit goods on its website.

But U.S. software, clothing and shoe manufacturers urged USTR to keep Taobao on the list.

To stay off in the future, USTR urged "Taobao to further streamline procedures ... for taking down listings of counterfeit and pirated goods and to continue its efforts to work with and achieve a satisfactory outcome with U.S. rights holders and industry associations."

USTR said it also removed Chinese website Sogou from the notorious markets list, based on reports that it has made "notable efforts to work with rights holders to address the availability of infringing content on its site."

U.S. concerns about widespread piracy and counterfeiting of American goods in China are expected to be high on the agenda at next week's meeting in Washington of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade.

The 2012 notorious markets list includes Xunlei, which USTR described as a Chinese-based site that facilitates the downloading and distribution of pirated movies.

Baixe de Tudo, a website hosted in Sweden but targeted at the Brazilian market, was also put on the list along with the Chinese website Gougou.

Warez-bb, which USTR described as a hub for pre-release music, software and video games, was also included. The forum site is registered in Sweden but hosted by a Russian Internet service provider, USTR said.

Mary Hardin-Baylor has a win over Mount Union in playoffs

When No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor takes to the turf at Mount Union Stadium today for its noon semifinal game against No. 1 Mount Union, it won?t be intimidated.

Unlike Christopher Newport, Johns Hopkins and Widener before them this postseason, the Crusaders from Belton, Texas, have a past history with the Purple Raiders and can see a positive in it.

Mary Hardin-Baylor is the last team to defeat the 10-time national champions at home, in the playoffs. They did it in this round in 2004, in spectacular fashion, a ?Hail Mary? delivering a 38-35 victory.

?Obviously, everyone down here knows we have gone there and beaten them,? said Pete Fredenburg, the Crusaders? only coach in their 15-year history. ?You know it can be done.?

That knowledge helps a team. But not one has turned the trick since then, a

28-game playoff span, and Fredenburg said it?s pretty obvious why.

?After you watch them on film, you know how difficult it can be (to beat them),? he said. ?I did not see any weaknesses. But our guys are competitors too, and we are looking forward to the challenge.?

Mary Hardin-Baylor still has never won a Division III national championship in football. It went on to lose that 2004 Stagg Bowl to Linfield 28-21.

That?s about the only honor to have eluded it. It?s had a national defensive player of the year in Jerrell Freeman, now the leading tackler for the Indianapolis Colts. The Crusaders have had a D3Football.com All-America player

12 years running, and Fredenburg has been the South Region Coach of the Year seven times.

This week, quarterback LiDarral

Bailey and linebacker Javicz Jones were named South Region Player of the Year on offense and defense, respectively. Jones earned his second consecutive POY honor. He did it by picking off seven passes and making 125 tackles.

?Our defense is good,? Fredenburg said. ?We've got a great linebacker who makes a lot of plays.?

Bailey makes a ton of plays. He is the nation?s second-rated quarterback, trailing only Mount Union?s Kevin Burke in efficiency, and has thrown 30 touchdowns against three interceptions. His looping shovel pass for a touchdown late in the Crusaders? 32-20 win over

Wesley last week was D3Football?s play of the week.

?I thought ? it has always been about ? having a chance to be successful,? said Fredenburg. ?A lot of pieces had to fall in place for us to be successful. LiDarral was one of those pieces.

?Right now, we feel LiDarral and the running backs and the wide receivers we have are really doing a nice job. And you can't do it without a good offensive line. I feel like we're playing well on offense.?

Senior offensive linemen Sam Maxie and Michael Coles also earned first-team South Region honors. Safety Mike Maldonado received second-team honors and running back Elijah Hudson and tight end Tyler Coker made the third team.

Coker, Maxie and Coles will be counted on to give Bailey time to throw and make some holes for Hudson and Darius Wilson against a Mount Union defense that is tops against the run and overall defense.

?We are primarily a running team,? Fredenburg said of his option offense. ?Obviously (Mount Union) being No. 1 defensively means they're a pretty strong group.

?But we're going to see what we can do. It will be a huge challenge to move the ball against them.?

The Crusaders know it will be tough. They also know it can be done.

ASTHMA Kids May Be at Slightly Higher Asthma Risk If Parents Had Infertility Treatments
By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, Dec. 6 (HealthDay News) ? Children born after in vitro fertilization are more likely to have asthma, according to a new British study.

Experts say, however, that parents shouldn?t be overly concerned about the new findings, and point out that the risk isn?t much higher than in other children.

?This is not a thing to worry about,? said Dr. David Cohen, chief of reproductive medicine and an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at University of Chicago. ?The incidence is really small.?

?I never really imagined such an association,? added Cohen, who was not part of the study. ?Association is not the same thing as causation ? and I wonder about the biological possibility.?

The report was published in the Dec. 6 online edition of Human Reproduction.

Lead study author Claire Carson, a researcher at the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit at the University of Oxford, put the asthma-IVF association into context.

?We think it is important to note that, in absolute terms, the difference in asthma prevalence in [assisted reproductive technologies] children is quite small ? 24 percent of [assisted reproductive technologies] children in our study were asthmatic, compared to a national average of one in five in the U.K.,? Carson said. ?It is also important to remember that asthma is a manageable condition for most children, and that it should not prevent them from living a full and active life.?

For the study, Carson?s team analyzed data on almost 19,000 children born between 2000 and 2002 who took part in a large observational study.

The researchers found that, at age 5, the children born using any fertility treatments, including drugs to induce ovulation, were 39 percent more likely to develop asthma, 27 percent more likely to develop wheezing and almost twice as likely to be taking asthma medications than children born without fertility assistance.

Children born after in vitro fertilization or intracytoplasmic sperm injection had a nearly three-fold increased risk of asthma, almost a doubled risk of wheezing and more than a quadrupled risk of taking asthma medications, compared to others in the study.

These findings held when the children reached age 7, although they were slightly reduced, the researchers noted.

To assure the strength of their findings, the researchers took into account the mothers? history of asthma, smoking status, weight, socioeconomic status, and whether they had pets, as well as the babies? gestational age at delivery, type of delivery and whether they were breast-fed.

Many possible explanations could account for the observed association between infertility problems and asthma, the researchers said. These include the severity of the infertility, infertility treatment, over-reporting of asthmatic symptoms by protective parents or other factors.

?This work adds to a small but growing body of evidence that suggests that children born after [assisted reproductive technologies] are more likely to experience childhood asthma,? Carson said. ?However, at this time we do not yet know if the observed association is causal, or the mechanism by which it acts. Further research is needed to establish what might be causing the association.?

Seemingly endless Wis. election cycle eases to end

That means a breather for busy campaign volunteers, a break for residents overwhelmed by robocalls, and more flexibility for advertisers who saw all the best TV spots get snapped up by deeper-pocketed buyers of campaign and issue ads. (AP Photo/Dinesh Ramde)

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Candidates approving this message have been at it for two years in Wisconsin, along with the robocalls, angry commercials, emails begging for campaign donations and glossy political mail.

Think you had it bad over the last few months? Don't complain to Wisconsin voters, who have endured a continuous stream of elections, recalls and recounts since 2010, including one statewide election each month between April and June.

With Tuesday's presidential and congressional races finally over in this battleground state, residents are settling in to a campaign respite.

Some said they're answering their phones again. Local advertisers have access to the prime television spots that had been monopolized by wealthy buyers of campaign and issue ads. Campaign volunteers suddenly have free time.

"I'm going to catch up on all the reading I've been putting off for a year," said 77-year-old Luonne Dumak, who estimates she spent eight to 20 hours per week volunteering at a GOP headquarters in southeastern Wisconsin for the last two years, including helping Republican Gov. Scott Walker beat back a recall effort.

"But you know," the retired office worker added, "in the spring there's another state Supreme Court race."

Many local voters probably don't want to hear that.

The action started in 2010, when Walker defeated Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett in a governor's race that cost $37.4 million, a record at the time. Walker moved swiftly to curtail collective bargaining rights for most public employees, sparking massive protests and prompting 14 Democratic state senators to flee the state in a futile attempt to block the plan.

Democrats then gathered enough signatures to force several Republican officeholders, including Walker, into recall elections as payback. Republicans responded by doing the same to a few Democrats.

But since the governor couldn't face a recall until he'd been in office for at least a year, Democrats in the meantime transformed an otherwise quiet Wisconsin Supreme Court election into a heated referendum on Walker.

A few months later, in the summer of 2011, nine state senators from across the state faced recall elections stemming from their positions on the labor law. Democrats defended their three incumbents and also took two of six seats from Republicans.

Five more elections arrived in rapid succession this year. Then a Republican presidential primary in April was followed by a Democratic primary in May to decide who would challenge Walker in the June recall election.

In August, four Republicans squared off in a bruising primary for the U.S. Senate. It came to an end Tuesday, with the deciding of the presidential and U.S. Senate elections that had attracted national attention and money to the state.

Margaret Grace, a junior and member of Marquette University's College Democrats, spent two years helping with one hectic Wisconsin campaign after another. After working so long to organize volunteers, make phone calls and knock on doors, she said it felt weird to have all the elections come to an abrupt end.

"It's certainly different. We were saying, 'What are we going to do now that we don't have a campaign to work on?'" she said.

Her group says it's considering partnering with environmental or women's rights groups on campus.

All those Wisconsin elections meant plenty of campaign spending: $81 million in the Walker recall race, about $65 million for the U.S. Senate race and $44 million for the state Senate recalls last year. A lot of that money went to TV stations in battleground areas such as Brown County.

Stations have to give legally qualified candidates their best ad rates. But issue groups, who are often well-funded and eager to spend, can be charged anything, said Steve Lavin, the station manager at WBAY-TV in Green Bay. Where a regular advertiser might be charged $2,000 for a prime-time spot, an issue group could be charged $20,000 to $30,000, he said.

That left some reliable advertisers scrambling for preferred spots. David Gruber, a personal injury attorney, is well-known throughout the state for his catchy commercials. But with fewer favorable time slots to choose from, he said his office compensated with billboards and website ads.

So many elections in such a short time could have caused Wisconsin voters to burn out. But the opposite was true. While voter turnout nationally was lower Tuesday than it was in 2008, the number of Wisconsin voters who turned out increased by about 80,000.

Still, the elections took a toll on some people.

Rita Pincsak, 63, of Brookfield said political divisions caused her to break off friendships with people whose views weren't compatible with hers. And James Stanhope, 60, of St. Francis said he stopped answering his phone for the past two months to avoid robocalls.

"I've gotten sick and tired of it," said Stanhope, adding that the endless TV commercials were intolerable. "I mean, when you know ads by heart and they start playing in your head, you've had too much."

Beyond SEO: Inbound marketing and your 2013 online marketing plan

Turn Your Web Site Into a Magnet for Customers with Inbound Marketing

Traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is dead.

There ? I said it. Not sleeping. Not pining for the fjords. Dead. As in doornail.

So should you start ignoring search engines? Not one bit; in fact, you should be paying more attention to them than ever. Let me explain.

? more ?

Let?s start with some basics.

SEO is all about taking your existing Web site and tweaking it ? changing some text, changing some code and building links back to it from other sites ??so that it appears higher in search engine results pages for keyword searches that matter to your business.

In my view ? and as it turns out, in Google?s view, too ? that focus is too narrow.

You see, when you focus so narrowly on inching your site up the Google search results you, frankly, end up doing some stupid stuff.

You end up packing the content of your site with so many keywords that it?s virtually unreadable, you end up creating hundreds and hundreds of junk Web sites in order to create links back to your site, you spam blogs with irrelevant messages about your product or service.

Just dumb stuff that doesn?t create value for anybody anywhere.

With an Inbound Marketing approach your focus is much broader ? and more tightly tied to real, meaningful business results for you.

Inbound Marketing is all about using great ??some would say exceptional ?? online content to help your prospective customers find your business, become a lead and ultimately to become your paying customer.

Search engine results ? and appearing prominently in them ? are still important. Search engines are ? and will be for some time to come ??probably the most important way for people to find products and services they?re looking for.

But in traditional SEO, the success metric is how high your site ranks for a given keyword. While in Inbound Marketing, the key metric is how effective your site content is at drawing people to it and how effective it is at converting those people into your paying customers.

Do you see the difference?

The Inbound Marketing playbook focuses on using all of the tools of online marketing, with great content at the hub:

  • Great, frequently updated online content improves search engine visibility and traffic to your site while it helps to educate your prospective clients
  • Social media tools help to amplify your message and engage your prospects
  • Effective content offers (again) and strong calls to action help to turn visitors to your site into leads
  • And more content (again), often delivered via email and social media, can help to educate those leads to a point where they?re ready to buy and more likely to buy from you than from your competitors.

In the Inbound Marketing playbook, SEO is only one small tactical element that?s at the service of bigger, more important business goals.

And it works!

Companies that use Inbound Marketing have far lower costs for acquiring each of their customers than companies using a hodgepodge of traditional marketing techniques.

And Google now rewards inbound marketers more than traditional SEO. With recent changes to the formula Google uses to generate search results, high quality, frequently updated content is now one of the most important factors in determining search engine rankings for your site.

That?s why Inbound Marketing deserves a place in your business? marketing plan for 2013.
