Troy Davis Execution: Celebrity Twitter Reactions

Troy Davis Execution: Celebrity Twitter Reactions

More than 20 years after being convicted of the 1989 murder of Savannah, Ga., police officer Mark MacPhail, Troy Davis was put to death by lethal injection in Georgia at 11:08 p.m. Wednesday. Davis, 42, maintained his innocence up until the end.

"The incident that night was not my fault, I did not have a gun," Davis told MacPhail's family before his execution, according to witnesses. "I did not personally kill your son, father and brother. I am innocent." His final words were: "May God have mercy on your souls; may God bless your souls."

The case drew global attention and sympathy over the years because many supporters felt there was more than a reasonable doubt about Davis' guilt. In fact, Davis' death sentence spurred many celebrities to rally at the last minute to try to sway authorities in Georgia to stay the execution.

Outkast member Big Boi was one of the most vocal of Davis' supporters. He asked his Twitter followers to call the district attorney and judge involved in the case and tell them there's "#toomuchdoubt" about the sentence. Later in the day, Big Boi headed from Atlanta to Jackson, Ga., -- the site of Davis' execution -- to lead a rally against the event and to support Davis' last minute appeal against the death sentence. When Davis was pronounced dead after the failed appeal, Big Boi tweeted, "Just remember we fought til the very end....peace and Blessings."

30 Rock star Alec Baldwin also took to Twitter to express his outrage over the situation. "For all you blood-thirsty right wing trash out there tonight. The point is he may have been innocent. Ya get it now?" he twittered. "Every sensible American is appalled when police officer is killed. But the attendant charges are grave. U don't want 2 kill an innocent man."

After Davis's death was announced, Baldwin reprimanded, "Troy Davis is still dead. The gulf, still contaminated. Fukushima, still radioactive. Iraq, war. #wecraveignorancesowecanshoplikeamericans."

Also among Davis' many celebrity supporters were Sean "Diddy" Combs, Kim Kardashian, Russell Simmons and Gabrielle Union. They took to Twitter to take advantage of the one-hour delay in Davis' execution as the Supreme Court reviewed his case one last time.

"There's still hope! The Supreme Court has delayed Troy Davis's Execution for 1 hour to review his case!!!" Kardashian wrote, encouraging her followers to make their support of Davis known. After his death, she twittered, "Such an injustice!!!! Troy Davis was executed! My prayers are with the Davis Family! #RIPTroyDavis."

Celebs didn't only make their support known over Twitter. Lupe Fiasco addressed the controversial event at his concert Tuesday in Atlanta. He changed some of the lyrics while performing his hit, "Superstar," singing: "Unstrap him from the chair/ Put Troy back in his cage/Unstrap him from the chair/Put Troy back in the A."

Later, on Twitter, Lupe expressed his perspective on the execution. "Honestly I don't know if #TroyDavis was innocent or not. I prayed for his soul regardless," he wrote. "Rest In Peace Troy Davis & Officer Mark MacPhail. And all the innocent civilians killed in illegal wars we fight in the name of justice."

Hair unlocks Aboriginal origins

A lock of hair has helped scientists to piece together the genome of Australian Aborigines and rewrite the history of human dispersal around the world.

DNA from the hair demonstrates that indigenous Aboriginal Australians were the first to separate from other modern humans, around 70,000 years ago.

This challenges current theories of a single phase of dispersal from Africa.

An international team of researchers published their findings in the journal Science.

While the Aboriginal populations were trailblazing across Asia and into Australia, the remaining humans stayed around North Africa and the Middle East until 24,000 years ago.

Only then did they spread out and colonise Europe and Asia, but the indigenous Aborigines had been established in Australia for 25,000 years.

Australian Aborigines therefore have a longer claim to the land in which they now live than any other population known.

The research also highlights the exciting future possibilities of comparing the genomes of multiple individuals to track migration of small indigenous groups.

Tiny genetic differences

Archaeological remains are known from Australia from around 50,000 years ago, putting a maximum age of the Aborigines' settlement there.

But the history of their journey and their relationship with the indigenous people of Asia and Europe had not been solved.

End Quote Dr Francois Balloux Imperial College London

It was previously thought that modern humans dispersed in one pulse out of Africa and the Middle East, and because of the distances involved, the modern Europeans would have separated from the Asians and Australians first.

Genetic information from a lock of Aboriginal hair has been used to show that the Australians set off a lot earlier.

By looking at the tiny (fraction of one percent) differences between the DNA of Aborigines and other ancient humans, the scientists show that the indigenous Australians were first isolated 70,000 years ago.

Dr Francois Balloux, of Imperial College London described how a "population expanded along the coastline because of the rich resources available there. They could walk almost the entire way because the sea level was much lower". Just one small sea crossing would be required to reach Australia.

Any potential archaeological remains of this journey, which lasted 25,000 years, would be lost to the deep sea under rising sea levels.

The remaining populations in the Middle East moved out to colonise Europe and Asia 24,000 years ago, and the aboriginal genome records some interbreeding between Asian populations and aboriginal ancestors at this time.

Discovering the history of human migration with DNA has been made possible by improvements in the techniques used to study the genome.

Traditionally, genetic divergence dates were arrived at by combining the number of unique mutations in the DNA with an assumed rate of acquiring those mutations.

Now, computationally powerful models can simulate lots of different scenarios for migration timings and directions, and researchers can compare and choose the situation that most closely matches what is seen in the genome.

By comparing the Aboriginal genome with the DNA of African, European and Han Chinese individuals it was possible to highlight the later interbreeding after initial colonisation.

Comparison with Eurasian populations show that the Australian Aborigines have a similar percentage of Neanderthal genes within their DNA as their Eurasian counterparts, suggesting that any interbreeding occurred before the Aborigines embarked on their colonising journey.

The findings of these researchers are supported by an independent study, published this week in the American Journal of Human Genetics, which looks at the characteristic DNA from an extinct, archaic form of human, the Denisovans.

Denisovans lived over 30,000 years ago, and contributed genes mostly to present-day New Guineans.

This independent study identifies a pattern of Denisovan DNA in Asian individuals that can only be explained by two separate waves of human migration: the first of Aboriginals colonising Australia, and the second involving the occupation of Asia itself.

'Jurassic Park science'

The Aboriginal research was carried out on a single lock of hair, which was donated by a young Aboriginal man to the British anthropologist Dr A C Haddon in 1923.

"At this time, it was fashionable to take human samples," said Dr Balloux. The collection of hair was one of the more innocuous efforts of anthropologists at the time.

The researchers chose to examine the hair, as opposed to any other type of remains, for legal reasons. Hair is not classified as a human tissue.

"More important to us was that the research would be acceptable from a social and moral point of view" said Dr Balloux. To the surprise of the scientists, the people they consulted were very supportive of the study and its results. Dr Balloux explained that in the past, indigenous people have been "extremely sensitive of the motivations of western scientists".

The research has been published with "strong endorsement" from the Goldfields Land and Sea Council, the organisation that represents the Aboriginal traditional owners of parts of Western Australia, he said.

Genomics techniques like those used in this study have the potential to be used more extensively in the study of human migrations and the evolution of health and disease.

The international team next plans to look in more detail at the dispersal of modern humans out of Africa, as well as solving how and when the Americas were colonised.

Dr Balloux said he was excited about the unexpected potential of the techniques, describing it as "borderline Jurassic Park science".

Income Tax Preparation | All About Financial Matters

People do not generally think much about taxes, except during the annual tax season. For millions of Americans, it?s probably the most dreaded time of the year and most people mark it on their calendars along with holidays and birthdays. However, there is no joy associated with April 15th, the deadline for filing of tax returns.

Preparation of income tax returns is one job that requires concentration and time. It might seem a cumbersome and a tiring job, but it is extremely important.

For calculating tax as an individual, you must start by assessing your gross income, which includes your work income, interest income, pension and annuities. Subtracting any adjustments such as alimony, tax on self employment, retirement plans, education loan interest paid, interest penalty on early withdrawal of savings and others, provides the adjusted gross income (AGI).

After calculating the AGI, there are two options. You can either subtract a standard deduction, or subtract itemized deductions, whichever is greater. Some examples of itemized deductions might include some medical and dental expenses, interest on home mortgages, charitable contributions, state and local taxes and casualty losses.

When you subtract the personal exemptions, you will reach the figure of your taxable income. If your taxable income is more than $100,000 you need to go to the IRS tax rate schedules. Here, things get a little complex because a marginal tax rate system is used. Six tax brackets have been created: 10 percent, 15 percent, 25 percent, 28 percent, 33 percent and 35 percent. What tax bracket you fit in depends upon your income and your marital status.

In the United States of America, tax returns are forms that are filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), with the state, or with the local tax collection agency, which has information on how to calculate income tax or other taxes.

Form 1040 is the standard U.S. individual tax return form. Several variations of this form are also available, such as the 1040A and the 1040EZ. In addition to these, different supplemental forms are also found.

One interesting fact is that any income, whether from legitimate or illegitimate business, is taken into consideration for the purpose of taxation. For example, income from the sale of illegal drugs is taxable and is not exempted. Not filing one?s tax returns is also considered a criminal action.

Residents who attend conferences that focus on missed or misinterpreted cases are 67% less likely to miss important findings when reading on-call musculoskeletal x-ray images, a new study shows.

"Residents had 55 major discrepancies out of 5,326 x-ray studies of the shoulder, elbow, hand, wrist, ankle, foot, pelvis and knee before we began holding regular focused missed case conferences," said Dr. Jason Itri, of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and one of the authors of the study. That number dropped to 18 major discrepancies out of 5,272 x-rays studies after the focus missed-case conferences became part of the resident education program, he said.

The value of the conferences was emphasized by the fact that the major discrepancy rates for residents who attended the conferences was lower than that for board certified fellows who did not attend the conferences, Dr. Itri said. "During the time of the study, fellows had an overall major discrepancy rate of 1.5% diagnosing musculoskeletal injuries related to topics discussed during the missed-case conferences, while the residents overall major discrepancy rate was only 0.8%, nearly one-half the miss rate for fellows," he said.

The results of the study have encouraged Dr. Itri's department to include 10 focused missed cased conferences as part of a three week course residents take before they can take independent call. In addition, Dr. Itri and his colleagues are developing fellow-specific missed case conferences in each specialty.

The study is published in the October, 2011 American Journal of Roentgenology.
