Short stories only.
This collection of short fiction seeks to explore the role and effect of the traditional five senses in our lives?sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. Good writing engages our senses and this short story anthology aims to reflect not only the art of evoking sense in written form, but also takes ?sense? as its main theme. How is sense experienced and what does it mean to individuals, families and societies? Does the perception of sense (or of conditions that affect sense) differ across generations or cultures? Consider how sense can change over one?s lifetime. What is the relationship between sense and identity, or memory? What do people with synaesthesia experience?
We are looking for a broad range of submissions that are unique, evocative and sensual. Stories should be around 2000-2500 words, well written and well structured. Multiple submissions are not accepted; please polish and send only your best work. Simultaneous submissions are not accepted; we need to know that if we love your piece, we can use it. Finding out that it has already been accepted elsewhere can create hassles for all parties. Please only send work that is original, previously unpublished and for which you hold copyright.
We pay ?8.00 per short story. Payment is made, upon publication, via PayPal. Please send submissions to subs@chuffedbuffbooks.com
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
- Word counts: short stories between 2000-2500 words, flash fiction under 1000 words (unless otherwise indicated).
- Submissions should be free from all formatting, single spaced and posted into the body of an email (attachments will not be opened).
- Mark the subject line of the email with the name of the anthology you are submitting to, separated by a hyphen and the name you wish to be published under. For example: SENSE FIVE ? JANE DOE
- Please include a brief bio at the end of your submission. There is no need to list all prior publications, just give us a general idea of who you are and what you write.
- If you use a pen name, please make sure the pen name is in the subject line and please make a note of your real name in the email after the bio. (Don?t worry, this is just for our records and so we can pay you. Your story will be published under the name in the subject line.)
- Submissions must not be previously published; this includes print and any form of online publishing (personal blogs, e-Zines, eBooks and/or podcasts, chapbooks).
- Payments are made by PayPal after agreed edits and upon the return of a signed contract. We pay ?8.00 per story and ?3.00 per flash (unless otherwise indicated).
- Please retain a copy of your submission for your own records.
- Multiple and simultaneous submissions are not accepted. Only one submission per anthology.
- Stories may undergo editing where required. However, this is always in consultation with the author and we make every effort to retain each author?s individual voice and style.
- Copyright remains with the author; however, we will ask for exclusive rights to publish your story for a set term.
- Please note, we will consider stories longer than 2500 words. We will also consider work that falls outside of current themes. However in this instance please either query first or mark your submission as ?GENERAL ? YOUR NAME? in the subject line. For stories over 2500 words, payment may be negotiable.
- We will respond with a decision within three months from advertised closing dates. If you have not heard after three months then please query via email.
