Former Danish government minister Noergaard dies (AP)

COPENHAGEN, Denmark ? Former Danish Economy Minister Ivar Noergaard who negotiated his country's entry into the European Union has died. He was 89.

Noergaard's Social Democratic Party says he died Thursday from a cerebral blood clot.

Noergaard, who held several ministerial posts in Social Democratic governments in the '60s and '70s, was a keen supporter of the EU's forerunner, the European Community. He oversaw talks leading to Denmark's membership in the bloc in 1973.

Noergaard consistently opposed the common European currency, the euro. Denmark has opted to stay out of the eurozone.

He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements weren't immediately known.
