Can Online Gaming Survive in the Mobile World?

Online gaming has been an Internet sensation since the early 2000s. In today?s time, however, can online gaming via a web browser still survive and thrive?

People today are just as much on the move than previously, if not more. That variable being constant, people?s dependency on technology is ever increasing. Today, people can?t leave their homes without having their smartphones and tablets, both of which are usually connected to the Internet at all times. Still, internet gaming is decreasing as people opt to spend their casual gaming time on native apps for their mobile devices. This only makes sense as people would rather game on a device they already have with them in a platform that allows for seamless gameplay. Even for identical games with identical gameplay, such as Angry Birds which is available on both mobile devices and the web browser, it is still more often played on the mobile device. Not only is the game interaction more powerful, but the flexibility and portability of the mobile device is much greater. Instead of having to whip out a laptop with Internet connection every time you?re bored, you simply unlock your mobile device and resume gameplay from your last activity.

Despite this, several gaming categories on the browser platform, such as pay-to-play sites like Cheeky Bingo and family friendly sites such as Candystand, are still widely popular. While sites such as these are still popular, typical people are moving away from hours spent on computer and web gaming to gaming on their mobile device as a way to pass smaller amounts of time.

What do you think about mobile gaming versus browser/Internet gaming?
